Second seeded Quakertown and sixth seeded Council Rock South advanced to the quarterfinals of the District One Duals by winning their second-round matches Thursday night at Pennsbury.
The Panthers defeated Norristown 47-15, while Rock pounded Upper Moreland 60-12.
“The kids came out and did a real good job tonight,” said Council Rock South coach Brad Silimperi. “Up and down the lineup, I couldn’t be more pleased. We need to keep this momentum going into next week.”
Silimperi was also complimentary of Upper Moreland.
“They have some quality individuals,” he said. “They’re going to have a nice tournament. They have a lot of point-getters. Don’t be surprised if they have a lot of guys on the podium at the section and district tournaments.”
Quakertown will face No. 7 Upper Perkiomen, a 47-14 winner over Spring-Ford, Friday at 6 p.m. at Council Rock South. At the same time and place, the Golden Hawks will take on Central Bucks East, a 30-28 winner over Radnor.
Despite the overwhelming performance by Rock South, there were two matches of particular interest. At 125, Upper Moreland’s state place winner Tim Santry (seventh) squared off against Matt Rappo, who finished fifth at regionals.
After a scoreless first period, Rappo escaped and pancaked Santry to his back for five points. Santry escaped in the third, but Rappo took him down with a double for an 8-1 decision.
“Those are two of the best kids in the state,” said Silimperi. “They could see each other in the post season an awful lot. It was a preview of things to come. Both guys really went at it. I look forward to seeing them wrestle some more.”
At 135, Upper Moreland’s Will Dill gave South’s Matt Martoccio a real battle before falling 12-8. Dill took Martoccio down twice in the first period for a 5-2 lead, but Martoccio tied it at seven in the third on a late reversal. In the third, he turned Dill for three back points before Dill escaped. Martoccio took him down for the final 12-8 victory.
“We bumped Martoccio up to get him a good match,” said Silimperi. “Dill’s a solid kid. He’s unorthodox. He can score a lot of points from a lot of different positions. Matt gave up some points early, but he battled and got stronger and stronger as the match goes on.”

Before the match against Norristown, Quakertown coach Kurt Handel told his team he wanted “all grit and no quit.”
Though the Panthers had little trouble with Norristown, Handel didn’t see the kind of aggressiveness he was hoping for.
“We came out a little slow,” he said. “We weren’t as aggressive as we normally are. We got a little lead and sat back on it. I’d like to see us going for the bonus points. Norristown is really tough and aggressive. They brought everything tonight.”
One match Handel had to have been pleased with was Eric Koch’s.
The match was well in hand when Koch stepped out on the mat at 140 with just one more bout remaining.
He was facing the Eagles’ Brandon Parker, who was a regional qualifier a year ago.
Koch went to work right away taking Parker down, but Parker tied it on a reversal. Parker took the lead in the second with a takedown of his own.
Coach Mark Harner admitted he might have made a mistake to tell Parker to choose bottom the third period.
It proved fatal.
Koch took the lead on a tilt for a two-point near fall, and shortly after, pounced on him with a wicked crossface cradle that resulted in a fall with 30 seconds left.
“I saw it there and I jumped at it,” said Koch. “You have a chance like that in a match, you have to go for it. He was getting out and I was going to lose, so I had to go for something real quick so it didn’t go to overtime. I rolled him through and I stuck him.”
“He should have taken neutral,” said Norristown coach Mark Harner. “It was my fault.”
Quakertown is notorious for using the cradle.
“It’s a move our team is real familiar with,” said Koch. “I’ve been wrestling for a long time and I’ve been doing it for years. When I see it, I take it.”
That made Koch 2-0 against the Parker brothers, since he defeated Stephen last year in the district semifinals.
The Parker brothers are certainly not Quakertown fans as Briar Malischewski ended the match with a narrow 2-0 win over Stephen Parker, who was also a regional qualifier last year.
Quakertown received dominating performances from Nick Lubenetski (pin at 152), Tyler Wolfe (pin at 171), Robert Basile (tech fall at 189), Scott Wolfinger (tech fall at 103), Colin Bynum (pin at 125) and Matt Rust (major at 135).
“I would have liked to have done better,” said Norristown coach Mark Harner. “I’m happy we won a match (42-28 over Pennsbury in the first round). We didn’t win a match last year. In both matches we tried stuff that works against lesser teams but doesn’t work against the better teams.”
