The Harrington Cup will remain in the possession of Council Rock South.
The Golden Hawks made sure of that, dominating Wednesday night’s rivalry battle and delighting the raucous Hawk fans who packed the stands at the Rink at Warwick by winning their 10th Rock Cup.
“We hyped it up a lot with the crowd,” Justin Adams said. “They all just love being here too, and when they start chanting, it gives us all the momentum and gets us rolling.”
“We’ve been talking about it for a while in school,” Jay Jenkins added. “We’ve been trying to tell people to get tickets. Everyone’s been hyped about it.
“It’s been really cool getting everyone to come. We’ve been getting a lot of support, and we’ve been feeding off the crowd. It’s been a really good turnout.”
Rock South – with a decided advantage in size and numbers on the ice – was a heavy favorite heading into Wednesday’s non-league game. The two teams are no longer in the same division since Rock North has moved to the smaller school American Division this season.
“I’ve known (Rock North coach) Eric (Tye) for a lot of years, and they’re in a tough situation this year because of the numbers,” Rock South coach Joe Houk said. “We had over 20 guys on the bench, and that helps when you’ve got the legs.”
The Golden Hawks got on the board early when Darren Barder turned a nifty pass from teammate Alex Keck into a goal at the 15:09 mark of the first period. With five minutes left in the period, Barder – who had a hand in four goals - returned the favor, finding Keck for the score and a 2-0 Rock South lead. Max Bergman also was credited with an assist on the goal.
Early in the second period, the Golden Hawks all but iced the win. Jared Wagenmann turned a Barder assist into a goal, and 18 seconds later, Jenkins scored a shorthanded goal to put the Golden Hawks on top 4-0.
“We thought it was important to get a good start early and build off that momentum,” Jenkins said. “We knew that if we didn’t come out really hard in the beginning we’d lose the game because they wanted it way more than we did because we’ve gotten it a lot more times than they did.
“We feed off our teammates’ energy, our fans’ energy – it was awesome.”
The Golden Hawks led 5-0 when Jenkins found Austin Price for a goal. With 5:55 remaining in the second period, Bergman scored a goal, using assists from Barder and Jess Lopez.
The third period included a stretch that saw the Golden Hawks - thanks to a series of penalties – down two players for a stretch, but the Hawks’ defense and goalie Chris George stood tall, thwarting every Rock North attempt to get on the scoreboard.
“They fought hard,” Houk said of the Indians. “We came out real strong, and when you know you kind of have the upper hand, you flatten out.
“Then we got in penalty trouble and gave them a little bit of life.”
George collected 13 of his 22 saves in the third period to preserve the shutout.
“Chris has been playing great – that’s his second shutout,” Houk said. “He’s really done a great job for us so far, and when they got that five on three, we just said – make sure he sees everything, and it turned out good.”
Neither team scored in the third period as the Golden Hawks rolled to the shutout win.
“Our goalie played pretty good,” Adams said. “He was solid back there, and we all just played for him – after we pretty much knew we got the win, we did it for him.”
Rock South held a 35-22 advantage in shots. While George recorded 22 saves in the shutout, Rock North goalie Dammien Starsinic was credited with 29 saves.
EXTRA SHOTS: Both teams were winners off the ice as they combined to raise $1,600 for the MS Society.

Ross Koenig and Kyle Bennett both collected the hat trick to lead the Tigers to the no-doubt-about-it win. Koenig finished the night with five points, also contributing a pair of assists, while Bennett added one assist for four points.
The Tigers led by just a 2-1 score at the end of one period. It was Bennett (Michael Roarty assist) putting the Tigers on the board with a power play goal, but Lower Moreland’s Coleman Peppelman scored a shorthanded goal to knot the score. Koenig’s goal in the closing minute of the period gave the Tigers a lead they would not lose.
In the second period, Zakary Keyser (Steven Avellino assist), Koenig and Bennett (William Findaly/Koenig assists) each added a goal for a 5-1 lead. The Tigers tacked on five goals in the third period for the 10-1 final.
James Johnson (one goal, two assists) and Roarty (one goal, two assists) added three-point games for the Tigers.
Truman held a 31-19 advantage in shots on goal. Truman goalie Kyle Huth was credited with 18 saves in the win while Lower Moreland’s Ryan Hoffman had 21 saves.
