WARMINSTER – Most prognosticators of the Class AA Suburban High School Hockey League forecasted a playoff final between Council Rock South and Central Bucks East before the first puck was dropped in the 2010-2011 season.
And in a preview to that possible final, Council Rock South (12-0-1) withstood a furious Central Bucks East (11-3-0) comeback to defeat the Patriots – 4-3 – in a very entertaining game played at the Bucks County Ice Sports Center in Warminster.
“I would rather play a one-goal game than walk over someone by 10 goals,” said Council Rock South head coach Joe Houk. “Of course, I don’t want to be on the wrong side of that one-goal game.
“Central Bucks East has good kids, good coaches, and we love to play games like these,” added Houk. “Good teams find a way to win games like these, and we had to work hard to find a way tonight.”
One of the hardest workers for the Golden Hawks was defenseman Zack Goodman – who is back on the ice after a wrist injury.
“Zack is a terrific player who has both tremendous skill and speed,” said Houk. “But he adds so much in terms of leadership.”
Goodman was more than up for the challenge from CB East.
“The East game is always a fun game to play,” said Goodman. “At the beginning we played very well, but they came back and made it come down to the last minute.”
The game had a disastrous start for CB East as Rock South took 14 shots and scored two goals before the Patriots managed their first shot on goal with 2:50 left in the first period.
“We have to go out and make things happen instead of waiting for things to happen,” said CB East head coach Ken Latchum. “I don’t know that we even started slow – it was like we weren’t on the ice at all.
“I don’t know if it had anything to do with the fact that it was South, but we didn’t wake up soon enough,” added Latchum. “We finally got things moving in the second and third periods.”
CR South opened the scoring at the 11:45 mark of the period on an unassisted goal by Goodman and added a second goal on a shot by Patrick Grilli. The third Golden Hawk score of the period came off the stick of Shane Ryan with 1:30 left in the period.
The final shot total of the first period stood 15-2 in favor of the Golden Hawks.
The second period was evenly played as both teams had seven shots on goal, and both teams scored a single goal.
Patriot center Austin Cinalli cut the lead to 3-1 with a goal at the 9:44 mark, but Rock South countered with a goal by Thomas Kopania at the 8:34 mark to regain a three-goal lead for Rock South at 4-1.
CB East controlled the third period as it outshot the Hawks 12-5 and scored the only two goals of the period.
Nick Patullo scored on an assist from Alex Piccione to make the score 4-2, and Tyler McIntosh with 5:47 left to give East a shot to tie the game at 4-3.
CB East, though, could not beat Rock South goaltender Steve Jastrow again and the Golden Hawks secured its win.
“At the beginning of the game we got some lucky breaks,” said Houk. “And then we sat back a little bit, and East got itself back into the game.”
“I told the kids during the game that we had to do three things well if we want to beat South,” said Latchum. “One – we have to forecheck; two – we have to take the body; and three – we have to be ready to play them from the very beginning of the game.
The next time these two elite SHSHL teams will most likely meet is in the league playoffs.
Stay tuned.
