Rough Day for SOL at Carpenter Cup

It was a rough day for the SOL when play resumed in Carpenter Cup action on Wednesday morning at FDR Park.

The SOL National-Bicentennial squad was sent home as a result of its 1-0 loss to Mercer County while the SOL American-Continental team suffered its first loss of the double elimination tournament, falling to Jersey Shore 8-6.
Both games were suspended on Tuesday because of lightening, and as a result, the schedule for the tournament has been revised. While the SOL National-BAL has been eliminated from the tournament, the SOL American-Continental will return on Monday for a 9:30 a.m. game against Lehigh Valley. In order to advance to Tuesday’s championship round, the SOL American-Continental would need to win three games on Monday.
“They’re all used to playing that many games in a day,” Upper Dublin coach Heather Boyer said. “They all play travel ball over the weekend.”
In Wednesday’s contest, the Jersey Shore opened up an 8-0 lead before the SOL American-Continental came to life offensively in the bottom of the fourth inning.
North Penn’s Steph Kulp drew a leadoff walk, and Central Bucks West’s Cassandra Zanolini followed with a single. A walk to Norristown’s Sammi Kidd loaded the bases for Wissahickon’s Katie Ziegler, who delivered a two-run single to right.
Two outs later, North Penn’s Jess Mower drew a walk to re-load the bases, and a walk to Norristown’s Gina Pellechio pushed a run across the plate. North Penn’s Taylor Marchozzi delivered an RBI single to make it an 8-5 game.
In the fifth inning, Kidd drew a two-out walk, and Ziegler followed with her second hit of the game. It was an 8-6 game after Michelle Holweger’s RBI single to center, but that’s as close as the SOL American-Continental would get.
“We just couldn’t get over the hump,” Boyer said. “Give Jersey Shore credit. They have good bats. Every time we made a mistake, they got a bat on it.
“Our girls could have easily given up after it was 8-0 and packed it in. They didn’t do that. They rallied back, got five runs in the fourth. They were in it.”
Ziegler was the lone SOL player to collect multiple hits with a pair. She also absorbed the loss on the mound, allowing six runs – only three earned – in four innings. Steph Kulp allowed two runs and four hits in three innings to open the game.
At the adjoining diamond, the SOL National-BAL never could find its offense in a 1-0 loss to Mercer County, collecting just four hits – one each by Bristol’s Brooke Dugger, Council Rock North’s Morgan Lewis, Pennsbury’s Savanna Grantham and Neshaminy’s Lauren Quense.
Quence worked three scoreless innings on the mound, allowing just one hit while fanning five. Lewis absorbed the loss, allowing four hits in three innings while striking out two.
