The Upper Dublin boys and girls swim teams sure know how to throw a party.

They teamed up to host the second annual Cardinal Carnival on Friday and Saturday and a variety of teams from District One and District 12 showed up to compete in a championship-format event.

The Upper Dublin girls fared the best among SOL schools, winning two individual events and two relays.

Casey O’Neill won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:14.64 for the Cardinals, while Emily Houser won the 100 backstroke (1:03.25).

Alex Wheatley, Emeline Leyens, Julia Rodriguez and Carolyn Meier teamed up to take first in the 200 medley relay (1:54.25) and O’Neill, Sam Wheatley, Houser and Meier won the 400 freestyle relay (3:43.86).

Upper Dublin’s Mieke Scherpbier, Leyens, O’Neill and Lindsey Schmidt took second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:43.98), Sam Wheatley was second in the 200 individual medley (2:14.83) and Alex Wheatley was third in the 100 backstroke (1:04.40).

The Cardinals’ “B” relay of Houser, Gina Casale, Schmidt and Sam Wheatley took third in the 200 medley relay (1:58.22).

“We’ve been doing well this season and we have a really big team, which helps get those points,” Upper Dublin senior Jessica Nealis said.

“I think we come into this meet just hoping to swim well and have fun and I think we did that. There was a lot of good competition here and we had a lot more teams this year than we did last year which is a good thing. It gives us an idea of what’s out there but in a fun way.”

Andie Blaser of Central Bucks West won the 100 freestyle (54.03) and took second in the 100 backstroke (1:03.92).

The Bucks foursome of Blaser, Laura Johnson, Jennifer Strohmeyer and Quinn MacMillan third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:45.53).

“(Coach Vibeke) Swanson told me it would make her day if I won the 100 free so that’s what I wanted to do,” said Blaser, a senior.

“This is my last year and I’m thinking more beyond districts and onto states this year. This is a competitive meet and there are a lot of teams here that we never swim.

“That definitely changes it up and it gives you a look at some teams in our district that we normally wouldn’t have seen until districts, like Haverford. It’s interesting to see what’s out there.

“Also this pool is so beautiful that it’s worth coming to the meet just to swim here.”

Pennsbury’s Shannon McHenry won the 200 freestyle (2:02.18) and took third in the 100 freestyle (56.01) while teammate Naomi Polster was second in the 500 freestyle (5:37.30).

The Upper Dublin boys quartet of Bobby Bantley, Cooper Tollen, Zach Brech and Eric Jensen won the 200 medley relay in a pool record time of 1:37.92, eclipsing the previous mark of 1:38.15, also by Upper Dublin (Bantley, Tollen, Brech and Ashton Leyens).

Tollen also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.06, lowering his own pool record of 1:02.58.

Jensen was second in the 200 freestyle (1:45.50), Bantley was second in the 50 freestyle (22.47), Brech was second in the 500 freestyle (5:08.36) and third in the 200 individual medley (2:07.13) and the foursome of Brech, Joe Starosta, Jensen and Bantley was second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:28.84).

Kyle Lukens of Plymouth-Whitemarsh won the 200 individual medley (1:56.85) while teammate Kyle Campbell was third in the 500 freestyle (5:12.06).

“It’s a big meet,” said Lukens, a senior. “There were a lot of good teams here and that made it really fast.”

Lukens had been aiming for the pool record of 1:58.02, set on Dec. 18, 2010, by former PW teammate Alex Chialastri.

“That didn’t happen but I’m very happy with my time,” he said. “I think it’s going to be a strong season for us as a team and I’m really excited for our taper.

“We have some freshmen who are going pretty quick and some juniors who are stepping up. We’re hoping to make states in two relays.”

Lukens primarily swims the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.

“The IM is a little different for me but it’s good to do something different every once in a while to break the monotony of doing the same events over and over,” he said.

A total of seven pool records went down in the boys events.
