Selfinger Overcame Obstacles Reaching Perfection

During the 10th frame and final roll of the second game against North Penn on 1/30/2012, Plymouth Whitemarsh senior stared down one more "X" to reach the top of the mountain- 300. The spectators and fellow teammates and opponents quieted their voices as they could witness history. Selfinger reached to grab his 16-pound sphere from the ball return, and then tapped the bowling ball behind his right foot. After the rituals, the senior anchor stepped to the lane, released his 16-pounder, and watched the roll from 38 feet from the line hit the pins, with the seven pin ricocheting onto the 10-pin. Strike 12- perfect game- 300.

" I can't believe what just happened," exclaimed an excited Selfinger. " I did it! I bowled a 300- a perfect game!"

As the 300 had been officially announced over the Facenda Whitaker Lanes intercom, Selfinger's achievement added to PW's single-game total pinfall record of 1,160, which had previously been 1,120, which was set in January 2012 against North Penn also at the East Norriton lanes. North Penn would eventually be victorious, 3-1 (2,936-2,895), over the host Colonials despite the records.  Selfinger's 300 is the seond perfect game in PW boys and girls bowling history, as Chris Hammes (PW class of 2010) achieved perfection in February 2008. The senior anchor has been a member of the Colonials' bowling squad since November 2009 as a sophomore, after missing the cut in 2008.

" I was horrible as a freshman, and I could not score over 100," Selfinger said. " I knew that if I would practice, I would eventually get those high scores."

Without a doubt, Selfinger's 300 is the highest recorded individual score in the Suburban One League of 2011-2012. The previous 300 game in the Suburban One League had been achieved by Chris Walters (Neshaminy class of 2011) at Council Rock South in February 2011. After Walters' 300, the highest individual SOL score was a 299 recorded by Kyle Transue (North Penn class of 2011) at the 2011 Suburban One League championships.
