#4 COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 4, #5 SOUDERTON 3
By Ben Reese

WARWICK -- Council Rock South knew it was going to have to dig down a little deeper if it was to advance in the Suburban High School Hockey League playoffs.

After all, the Golden Hawks were missing three players who were suspended following a fight in their last game against William Tennent.

But that wasn't all Rock South was missing. Head coach Joe Houk was also suspended for one game because the team had been assessed 15 (or more) penalties in that same game against Tennent.

However, in the end, the missing players and coach didn't hurt the fourth-seeded Hawks, who pulled out a 4-3 win over No. 5 seed Souderton at Revolution Ice Gardens on Monday night.

"It was the playoffs," said acting head coach Mark Sibre. "Everybody's ready to go for the playoffs."

But didn't the suspensions of the players hurt?

"It did," Sibre said. "The jayvee guys we pulled up did a very good job for us. They filled in nice, but the guys we were missing were key guys. It hurts you."

Michael Kauffman scored the first goal of the game for Rock South and assisted on the game-winning goal.

"We were missing one of our better Ds (defensemen)," he said. "Also our top scorer wasn't there.

"It hurt us a little bit but the guys we had did their jobs. The jayvee kids did very well."

How about the head coach?

"(It was) definitely a different atmosphere," said Kauffman. "We were very quiet, but I think he (Houk) would have kept us upbeat, yelling at us and (keeping us) on our toes. It was very rare that the Council Rock South bench was very quiet."

For Sibre, it was a different feeling.

"We have a little different attitudes," he said. "That's why we have been together for so many years.

"Joe brings a whole different level of energy than I do. Two different spectrums."

For Souderton coach Matt Montagna and the Indians, the Hawks were still a dangerous opponent.

"I think regardless of who was suspended, their guns were here," Montagna said. "(Jake) Houk and (Dylan) Feoli were here."

Souderton broke out of the gate first, scoring the first goal of the game with 2:26 gone when Tyler Johnson stole the puck, went in alone and beat Rock South goalie Mason Procz for a short-handed goal.

Kauffman evened the score with only 1:31 remaining in the first period, scoring on Souderton net-minder Dawson Anders on the power play.

The Golden Hawks jumped out quickly in the second. With only 1:19 gone in the stanza, Jake Houk scored an unassisted goal.

But Souderton hung tough and got the equalizer at the 13:21 mark. Johnson, off assists from Miles Minnick and Gabe Evans, tied the game up.

However, the Hawks took advantage of a Souderton penalty to take the lead. Trey Elmer scored on the power play at the14:39 mark.

Once again, Souderton came back. Only 25 seconds into the third period, Jordan Englehart netted an unassisted goal to again tie the game.

Council Rock South grabbed the lead for the final time with 11:10 gone in the third. Logan Hurwitz took a pass from Kauffman to net the game-winner.

While the loss spells the end of the playoffs for Souderton, Rock South moves into the semifinals. The Golden Hawks will face No. 1 seed Central Bucks West, a 12-2 winner over Truman, on Wednesday.

And it isn't the end for these two teams. They will meet again next week in the Flyers Cup.

"I think it's going to be a good game next week," Montagna said. "The last time we played them it was real physical. We knew it was going to be physical tonight.

"We've got to play better defense at the end. We can't play short-handed most of the game. I can't have my best players in the box.

"You've got to keep your emotions in check and we didn't do that the whole game. We got too inconsistent about things."

Until next time.

Tucker Forte, Shawn Philipps, and Joe Anton each had three-point nights with one goal and two assists to lead a balanced offensive effort for the Bucks, who saw 13 players get their names in the scoring column.

Back-to-back goals by Jake Boehm – both with Scott Cappuccio assists – gave West a 3-0 lead just over five minutes into the game. Joey Rockovich also assisted on the second goal. Dalton Karl scored a short-handed goal, and then it was Matthew McCarthy finding the net with a Forte assist to give the Bucks a 5-0 lead after one period.
The second period featured more of the same as the Bucks reeled off five unanswered goals to go on top 10-0. Rockovich scored a pair while Philipps, Karl and Anton had one each.
Truman averted the shutout with goals by Steven Avellino (Michael Roarty assist) and Roarty in the closing minutes of the third period. Savona and Jack Boland each tacked on a single goal to close out the scoring.

#2 CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 6, #7 NORTH PENN 0
Joseph DeLaurentis had himself a night. The Titans’ forward had a hand in all six of his team’s goals, scoring a pair and assisting on the other four.
Aidan Ehresman found the net 6:53 into the contest for a goal that turned out to be the game winner, using a DeLaurentis assist. Then it was DeLaurentis scoring back-to-back goals – the first unassisted (short-handed) and the second with assists from Matt Stoll and Frank Carter.
The Titans took that 3-0 lead into the second period when they added a pair, both by Colin Abbonizio and both with Delaurentis assists. Jake Anastasia scored the game’s final goal early in the third period, also with a DeLaurentis assist.
Kevin Dorozinsky was perfect in goal, turning away all 16 shots he faced in the shutout win. Caleb Floyd turned away 22 of 23 shots he faced for the Knights.  Catherine Winstanley recorded 14 saves.
