SOUDERTON 6, PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 3

Outdoor games have become increasingly popular not only for the NHL but also for the SHSHL. Souderton and Plymouth Whitemarsh met in an outdoor game at Spring Mountain Ice last Monday night.
The Indians - sparked by a 3-1 first period - went on to earn the win. In this case, the event is far more important than the outcome.
“It’s awesome for the kids – they love it,” Souderton assistant Justin Goshow said. “It’s a talking point for them for months until it happens. We’re being asked at the start of the season – ‘Is there going to be an outdoor game this year?’
“Not only for kids on the team but also for kids in the school that are fans. The last two outdoor games (Souderton’s previous outdoor game was in 2022) – that’s our biggest turnout game as far as fans because the kids at school love to see it.”
An outdoor game under the lights – according to Goshow – is a whole lot different than playing in an indoor rink.
“It’s an interesting challenge for the players,” the Indians’ assistant said. “Being outside, you don’t have as good lighting as inside any of the rinks. It’s a whole different animal.
“They have open hockey there on Tuesdays, and I go to it pretty often. I remember the first time playing there – you felt like you were learning again because of how much different the lighting is. It’s a big challenge on goalies, it’s a big challenge on players finding other players for passes and everything.
“It’s also a totally different thing hitting the net. You wouldn’t think it, but I’ve always found it harder to hit the net there with an entirely different backdrop behind the glass. It’s a different environment for players they have to overcome, and they did.”
