Soccer Notebook: Vol. 11

By Alex Frazier

State playoffs – For Neshaminy it was déjà-vu Saturday when the Redskins took on Lower Merion for the second time in 10 days.
In the first meeting on Oct. 29 in the District One semifinals, it was Dan Foley who scored in the waning minutes of the game to give the Redskins a 1-1 tie. Eventually Bob Shegda scored on a penalty kick to give Neshaminy the win.
Fast forward to Nov. 8 at C.B. West.
The Redskins trailed again 2-1 late in the game when Foley came to the rescue once again. And like the first time, the outcome came down to penalty kicks, and once again Shegda buried the winning one to advance the Redskins to the state semifinals against Downingtown West, Neshaminy’s nemesis in the district championship.
Meanwhile, in the lower half of the state bracket, Central Bucks East cruised along to the semifinals against Peters Township by dominating District Three champion Exeter, 3-0, and third place Lampeter-Strasburg, 2-0. For the Pioneers of Lampeter, it was their first time in the Class AAA division, having played in AA previously. They did get a nice 3-0 win over State College, before being schooled by the Patriots.
State brackets – Currently, four District One teams qualify for the state playoffs. Three of them are placed in the top half of the state bracket, which represents teams from the eastern half of the state. The fourth team is placed in the bottom half with the western teams.
Obviously, the fourth place team has to do more traveling, but to compensate for that, it often has the easier road to the finals. Meanwhile, the top three District One teams are knocking each other off in the top half of the bracket.
In one respect, it would be better for a team to lose in the consolation game so that it could be placed in the western bracket.
Some District One coaches are promoting the idea of placing two District One teams in the top and the other two in the bottom. That way, D-1 teams would have a better chance of advancing further, since they are often the strongest teams in the tournament.
“We have to do something,” said Neshaminy coach Rich Reice. “Either make the consolation game more meaningful or just spread out the District One teams. The travel is a concern, but let’s be fair. Let’s not load up one half of the bracket where guys are beating the heck out of each other and you get the fourth place team from your district be able to skate through to the final. There’s something wrong with that.”
Conference standings – Back in the pre-season, I predicted the finish of teams in all three conferences. Well, as usual, I wasn’t exactly on my game. Now, you know why I never make the trip to Atlantic City.
