PHILADELPHIA – With the Philadelphia skyline over his left shoulder, Souderton senior right hander Keith Moyer fired three shutout innings and helped the SOL American/Continental League to a convincing 10-2 victory over Delaware County in the opening game of the 25th Annual Carpenter Cup Classic.

The contest was played in FDR Park at the Richie Ashburn Field - in the shadows of Citizens Bank Park in South Philadelphia.

“It was nice to win a game, that was the best thing,” said Moyer who suffered through a frightful 4-14 season with the Indians. “It’s great to play with the best players in our league, and it is a great group of kids to play with.

“Last year when I played on the team, it was a lot of fun and I couldn’t wait to play again this year,” added Moyer – who had to repeat more than once to reporters that he was no relation to Jamie Moyer. “I might have been intimidated a little last year playing as a junior, but I didn’t feel that way at all this year.”

Central Bucks East junior Ryan Pater had a couple of key hits to fuel the 13-hit SOL attack. And Pater also opened his memory bank to last year.

“I tried out for this team last year, but I didn’t make it,” smiled Pater. “This year I came to tryouts much more relaxed, and I play a lot better when I’m relaxed.

“We had a tough year at CB East this year, and it is good to come here and win,” added Pater as his Patriots lost 10 of 18 games this season. “I hoped that I could come in and be productive. Everyone on this team is good, and we should do well in this tournament.”

The SOL American/Continental will face the Philadelphia Catholic League – a 12-2 winner over the Philadelphia Public League. That game will be on Monday morning – 9 am – at Ashburn Field.

“I didn’t really see them, I don’t think I really needed to see them,” said SOL A/C head coach Shannon Gunby (Wissahickon). “What we have here is an all-star tournament, and every team has good players.

“If our pitchers continue to pitch to contact, and we can move runners around, we should be fine,” added Gunby. “I just want to give our team the opportunity to just play the game.”

And the SOL A/C squad played the game very well.

Kurt Roberts (Quakertown) was the starting pitcher and tossed a pair of shutout frames for the winners. Roberts permitted just a single hit – a harmless single in the first inning.

The SOL American/Continental team was anything but harmless in its hitting in the third inning. The winners dented the plate six times and took a lead it would never give up.

Dan Seitzinger (Central Bucks West) opened the inning by reaching base on an error and scored moments later on a ringing triple off the bat of Casey Saverio (Hatboro-Horsham).

Jason Rathjens (Quakertown) followed with the biggest blow of the game – a towering home run over the 375-foot sign in left-center field. The shot gave SOL a 3-0 lead.

Joe Mullin (Central Bucks South) followed with a single – Dave McInerney (Upper Moreland) drew a walk - and Joey Casselberry (Methacton) singled to load the bases.

Matt Hollenbeck (Hatboro-Horsham) singled home Mullin, Mike Fontanella (Methacton) walked to force home McInerney, and Casselberry scored on an RBI by Seitzinger.

“It was nice to score all those runs,” said Gunby. “But sometimes in games like these, you can never have enough runs.”

Moyer threw his whitewash innings in the third, fourth, and fifth. He struck out three hitters and issued three walks.

SOL American/Continental scored a single run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Ray Puskar (Pennridge) to expand the lead to 7-0.

Rob McKenna (Wissahickon) came on in relief of Moyer and threw a 1-2-3 sixth inning.

The winners added three more runs in the seventh inning to take a ‘no mercy’ 10-0 lead.

Pater drove home both Dylan Tice (Pennridge) and Andrew Carr (Methacton) with a two-run single. Pater scored the third run of the inning after stealing second, going to third on a wild pitch, and scoring on a passed ball.

Delaware County got on the board with four singles in the last of the seventh inning. None of the hits off freshman Bryce Mengel (North Penn) were hit hard, but DC found some open spaces.

Rich Delgado (Central Bucks South) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for SOL American/Continental, and Anthony Caringi (Cheltenham) yielded a single run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

“These kids really seem to get along with each other,” said Gunby. “They seem to have a great time telling stories about playing against each other back in a day.”

And years from now they will be swapping stories about the 2010 Suburban One League American/Continental Carpenter Cup team.
