Hatboro-Horsham is poised to make a run for the Suburban One League Continental Conference title, and the Hatters were impressive in a 12-2 non-league victory over Truman.

“We have had a great start in the non-league part of our season so far, but the bottom line is how we are going to play in our league,” said Hatboro-Horsham head coach Pete Moore.  “I really feel that our league is one of the best in the state, and we will begin finding out how good we are in the league when we play Quakertown next week.

“To be able to win a game against an established program like Truman does a lot for our confidence,” added Moore. “We played some good baseball against a team with a winning tradition.”

Hatboro-Horsham jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back in the win over the Tigers.  Senior Ryan Kelly delivered a damaging triple in that first inning to spark the offense.  The remainder of the big hits for the Hatters came on doubles by Casey Saverio and Chris Hens.

“It felt good to jump out to that big lead early in the game,” said Moore as the Hatters closed the game out with a mercy-rule three run fifth inning.  “We hit the ball hard the entire game.”

Hatboro-Horsham finished the game with 11 hits, while Truman was one-hit by Hatter senior Casey O’Donnell.

“Casey threw the first four innings, had six strikeouts, and everything he threw seemed to work,” said Moore.  “He was dominant in the first three innings, and we only took him out of the game due to his pitch count.  We expect him to be a huge part of our success this season.”

A season that begins ‘for real’ when the Hatters host Quakertown on Tuesday.

Suburban One League American Conference

Upper Dublin (2-0) moved into the conference penthouse as the Cardinals scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat visiting Cheltenham (1-2) – 7-4.  Upper Dublin moved into a conference deadlock at the top of the standings with idle Upper Moreland (2-0).

“The season has gotten off to a real exciting start for us,” said Upper Dublin head coach Ed Wall.  “We had a comeback win against Wissahickon (6-5), and we have been playing some clutch baseball.”

The big hit in the last of the sixth inning came off the bat of senior Andrew Yekel.  Yekel singled home both Bryn D’Andria (single) and Jared Zarwin (hit by pitch) to put the game out of reach.

Andrew Carber – who also singled and scored a run in the sixth inning – came on in relief to earn the victory for the Flying Cardinals.

“We play Plymouth Whitemarsh in a double header on Wednesday next week,” said Wall.  “The players really like to play those two games against PW, and it is a great way to start Spring Break.”

And a pair of victories – in the extremely competitive SOL American Conference – will keep the Cardinals on their first place perch.

Wissahickon (2-1) remained in strong contention for the top spot in the standings as the Trojans held off winless Norristown (0-3) – 8-4.

“We tell the players that if we can manufacture runs, we can win baseball games,” said Wissahickon head coach Shannon Gunby.  “We had nine hits – all singles – but we were able to move runners.  We moved them by stealing bases, bunts, whatever it took to move them.  We did a lot of good situational things on the field.

“Joe McGinley threw a great game by pitching in on their hands and making them hit a lot of flares and popups,” added Gunby.  “And we played very well behind him with only one error.  If you have only one error in a high school game, good things usually happen.”

The Trojan offense was led by JT Crits who collected just one hit, but the senior had three RBI that included a pair of sacrifice flies.  Greg McDonough and Peter Bogdon each had three-hit day for Wissahickon.

“I told the players that if we win two out of three league games every week, we are going to be in a position to win a championship,” said Gunby.  “Of course you want to win every game, but I’ll take two out of three this week.”

Plymouth Whitemarsh (2-1) also took two of three in the first week of the SOL American Conference season as the Colonials marched to a 10-1 victory over visiting Upper Merion (0-2).

The winning pitcher for Plymouth Whitemarsh was Corey Ensslin who fired the first five innings and allowed just a single run.  Jake Mascio threw the final two shutout innings to close out the game for the winners.

Adam Piacitelli stroked a homerun to pace the Colonial offense.  Matt Minetola and Bobby Slagle each doubled for PW, while Mascio roped a triple for the Colonials.
