Suburban One League American Conference
Upper Moreland (5-2, 5-1) kept a firm hold on first place in the Suburban One League American Conference as the Golden Bears took care of business with an 11-4 victory over winless Norristown (0-8, 0-7).
“It was a real choppy game – especially in the first three innings,” said Upper Moreland head coach Ernie Rehr. “The one good thing we did was take advantage of what they gave us in respect to both walks and errors. They had three errors that hurt them, and we were able to be disciplined at the plate to get six walks to go along with two hit batters.”
The Bears scored four runs in the second inning – courtesy of three walks and two errors – and added four runs in the fifth inning to secure the win.
The offense was fueled by junior Matt Kohn who scored four runs that included a pair of singles – a walk – was a hit by a pitch – and also stole a base. Sean Valenza was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and a pair of RBI, while Robert Knox continued his hot hitting for the week with a double and an RBI.
“We hit the ball better in the middle innings,” said Rehr. “Matt had a great game for us, and Robert had a great week. Plus Tommy (Robinson) kept them off balance the whole game.”
Robinson – a sophomore – threw the first six innings and had three strikeouts.
“I saw that Cheltenham won today, and they have shown that they are going to be a team you have to look at as a contender,” said Rehr. “We have league games on Monday and Friday, and we have a bye on Wednesday. The bye comes at a good time – we need to practice on some things.”

Cheltenham (4-3, 3-2) moved into contention in the SOL American Conference as the Panthers clawed Plymouth Whitemarsh (5-4, 5-3) – 9-6.
“I was disappointed with the way that we played defense early in the game – we couldn’t get out of our own way,” said Cheltenham head coach Frank Decembrino. “But we came back from a couple runs down, and we were able to hit our way back into the game.”
Cheltenham scored five runs in the fourth inning to assume an 8-4 lead – a lead it would never relinquish. Marshall Salem, Kevin Graham, and Matt Myers all had RBI hits in that inning.
“We were able to execute some small ball in that inning,” said Decembrino. “We pieced the inning together without a really huge hit. We felt good about how we played in that inning.”
Matt Lawlor threw a complete game for the Panthers with a seven-inning, three-strikeout, and no walk performance.
“I really have no complaints about our pitching this year,” said Decembrino. “We have some league games to make up because of our trip to Florida, but I feel we have the pitching that can help us make up those games.”
Sophomore Jack O’Grady, senior John Craig, and senior Alex Baringi will all get turns on the hill for the Panthers. Baringi is back in action after missing time to a shoulder injury.
“Alex threw in Florida, and he looked good,” said Decembrino. “The whole Florida experience was great, and now we want to compete with the teams in our league.”

“The game was really intense,” said Pennsbury head coach Joe Pesci. “We fell behind 4-0 but came back to tie the game in the fourth inning.”
Council Rock South, though, outscored the Falcons 5-2 over the final three innings to capture the victory.
Steve Wright fueled the offense for the Hawks with a perfect 3-for-3 with a homerun and three RBI. And Paul Gosselin had two hits – a double and an RBI – to spark the Falcons.
“We were able to score the tying runs in the fourth inning by being very patient,” said Pesci. “We scratched out three hits and had four walks in that inning.”
