And the beat goes on ….

Suburban One National Conference

Abington (2-1, 2-1) squeezed out a 5-4 conference victory over Pennsbury (2-5, 1-2) on Wednesday.

Literally.

The Ghosts scored three runs on suicide squeeze bunts – two in the sixth inning and one in the fourth inning – to support a sparkling 13-strikeout complete game pitching performance by senior Jake Ruch.

“Jake was sailing along for the first six innings,” said Abington head coach Dave Torresani as the Ghosts led 5-0 going into that final frame. “But he got into trouble, and I just told him he had to finish what he started.”

Pennsbury scored four times in the top of the seventh inning to close to within 5-4, and had runners on first and third with two outs. Ruch coaxed a fielder’s choice grounder to secure the win.

“Jake is a power pitcher, but he mixed in some good breaking balls,” said Torresani. “In fact, he had three called strikeouts off his breaking stuff.

“We are a team that practices the squeeze plays quite a bit,” added Torressani. “We really aren’t predictable doing it, and we’re actually good at it.”

Mike Mullen squeezed home two Ghost runners, while Phil Sabella squeezed home the third. The last two Abington runs came on back-to-back squeeze plays in the sixth inning.

“Right now we are 2-1 in the conference, and that’s exciting,” said Torresani. “Any time we put Jake on the mound, we should be in the game.”

And be able to squeeze out some wins.

Neshaminy (3-0, 3-0) remained unbeaten this season with a convincing 10-2 conference win over Truman (1-2, 0-2).

The Redskins had an excellent outing from pitcher Ray Hyjurick and a great day at the plate from John Burns to notch the win.

“Ray threw a great game,” said Neshaminy head coach Dennis Cox. “Seven strikeouts, 91 pitches, a complete game, and only four hits.

“And John Burns is hitting line drives all over the place,” continued Cox. “The only ball that was hit in the air was the homer – and that ball was a bomb and is still rising somewhere.”

Burns burnt the Tigers with a perfect four-for-four day at the plate with six RBI.

“We have hit throughout the lineup,” said Cox. “Sean McGovern is our number eight hitter and had two hits and a double, and Ed Packer is our number nine hitter and he had two hits and a double.”

Suburban One American Conference

Upper Merion (2-1, 2-0) won in an unconventional fashion as the Vikings edged Norristown (0-3, 0-2) – 4-3.

The Vikings entered the final inning tied 3-3 and had the bases loaded with one out. Upper Merion hit a ball back to the pitcher who threw home for the first out, but a wild throw from the catcher in an attempt to get the double play allowed the winning run to score.

“It wasn’t the script that I would want to follow to win a game,” said Upper Merion head coach Jason Darnell. “But is still counts as a ‘W’, and we’ll take it.

“Norristown is always a strong rivalry, and it always seems like it takes all seven innings to decide things,” added Darnell. “And it did today.”

Ray Gambone threw a complete-game victory for the Vikings. He permitted just two hits and allowed on one earned run.

“We have three league games this week, and for him to give us seven innings was huge,” said Darnell. “He threw a nice game.”

Upper Dublin (4-2, 2-1) won its rivalry conference game with Wissahickon (0-5, 0-3) as the Flying Cardinals edged the Trojans – 5-4.

“Any time you can beat Wissahickon it is huge for the players and the school,” said Upper Dublin head coach Ed Wall. “We found a way early to score some runs, and we needed every one of them.”

The key hit in the three-run first inning for the Cardinals was a two-run single by Kim Troyer. Troyer also picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief.

The game winning hit for Upper Dublin came in the sixth inning as Jesse Kohler stroked an RBI single.

“The key to our success is going to be pitching and playing clean in the field,” said Wall. “We didn’t have an error today, and that helped us get the win.”
