SOL Baseball Wrap: 4-15-10

By Scott Huff

And the beat goes on …

Suburban One League Continental Conference

Central Bucks East (2-2, 1-2) exploded for 12 runs and 16 hits as the Patriots won their first conference game with a 12-9 – 10-inning – victory over host Hatboro-Horsham (4-2, 2-2).

“It was a real crazy win,” said Central Bucks East head coach Kyle Dennis. “Our guys worked real hard today – it was a team win.”

The Patriots hit the long ball as sophomore Tyler Zeleny and junior Sean Trymbiski each blasted homeruns.

East also had a pair of key triples in the contest. The game-winning hit in the tenth came off the bat of junior Ryan Pater – a triple, and a triple by Kris Davis cleared the bases in the first inning.

Zeleny earned the win by hurling a scoreless 10th inning in relief of Davis –who threw five strong innings for the Patriots.

“The first league win is an important one,” said Dennis. “We know we can hit the ball, maybe not with the power of last year, but we should score runs.

“We play Council Rock North tomorrow in a non-league game, and that should be a test,” added Dennis. “These kids love to play the game, and they are a lot of fun to be around.”

North Penn (3-1, 3-0) came up clutch in both at bat in the field as the Knights eked out a 7-6 conference win over host Central Bucks West (3-3, 2-2).

North Penn trailed 6-4 with two outs in the seventh, but rallied for three runs to take the lead. The key hits were an RBI single by junior Ryan King and a two-run single by Mark Grassie that proved to be the game winner.

Grassie – who earned the win – benefited from a double play to close out the game in the last of the seventh inning.

Central Bucks South (4-2, 2-2) rallied back from a three run deficit to defeat host Souderton (1-4, 0-3) – 9-8.

“This is par for the course,” said CB South head coach Mike Schaffer. “This whole league is really crazy.”

The Titans scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to make a winning pitcher out of 6-foot, 6-inch Rich Delgado.

South third baseman Jeff Gyza led the hitting attack with a perfect three-for-three with a pair of doubles and four RBI.

Suburban One League American Conference

Wissahickon (1-5, 1-3) earned its first victory of the season as the Trojans scored 10-runs in the fourth inning on their way to a 16-5 win over winless Norristown (0-4, 0-3).

“This win was a huge win for us,” said Wissahickon head coach Shannon Gunby. “We have had some problems all season with errors and leaving runners on base.

“We still had three errors today, but we took care of the men left on base,” added Gunby. “We came up with some big hits.”

How about Wissahickon junior Chase Merrill?

Merrill entered the game hitting .857 this season – and that is not a typo - .857. The talented leftfielder had two hits against the Eagles with a homerun and three RBI.

Trojan freshman Billy McFarland made his varsity debut at third base and collected a key two-run single in the fourth inning.

Junior centerfielder Brian Kaissi – who has also stroked the ball very well all season – had a perfect three-for-three day with three doubles.

“I told the kids after the game that we were still in this thing,” said Gunby. “Our conference is so wide open that any team can beat any other team. We just have to take care of ourselves.”

One win at a time.

Springfield (3-0, 3-0) kept its unbeaten streak in tact with a thrilling 7-6 conference victory over visiting Cheltenham (2-3, 0-3).

The Spartans trailed 6-5 going into the last frame. Jake Yannessa blistered a triple and scored on an RBI single by Mark Trainor. Trainor scored the game-winner on an infield single by Mark Vito.

Pete Lovitt was the winning pitcher for the first place Spartans.

Upper Merion (3-1, 3-0) remained in a first place deadlock with Springfield as the Vikings sailed to an 8-2 win over Upper Moreland (3-1, 2-1).

Greg McCuch had a huge day for the winners as he tossed a complete game, six hitter. McCuch struck out eight Golden Bear hitters.

There were four Vikings who collected a pair of hits to fuel their 10-hit attack. McCuch, Ben Dworecki, Matt Shannon, and Ryan Dolga combined for eight hits and seven RBI.

Upper Dublin (5-2, 3-1) used a little ninth inning magic to collect a 9-6 extra inning conference win over host Plymouth Whitemarsh (1-4, 1-3).

The Flying Cardinals had key hits in the deciding inning delivered by Gregg Brown – two-run double – and Jesse Kohler – an RBI single.

Tim Troyer hurled the final three and two-thirds innings to register the win.

Suburban One League National Conference

Pennsbury (3-5, 2-2) scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat visiting William Tennent (1-4, 0-3) – 5-4.

Tim Sheaffer earned his gold star for the Falcons as he was a perfect three-for-three and stroked the game-winning single.

Chris Wiertz had three hits that included a pair of triples, while John Sibel also had three hits to go along with an RBI.

Tyler Ward notched the win for Pennsbury with two and two-thirds innings of relief.

Abington (4-2, 2-2) had both good news and bad news in its 7-3 conference loss to Council Rock South (2-1, 2-1).

“We found out that (freshman) Jake Ferrante has the stuff to compete on the mound right now,” said Abington head coach Dave Torresani. “But we lost the game.”

Abington’s non-league game on Saturday with Cheltenham was postponed.

Non-league action

Neshaminy (4-0) kept its unbeaten streak alive with a 10-7 non-league victory over Pennridge (6-2).

“It was a typical Neshaminy-Pennridge battle,” said Neshaminy head coach Dennis Cox. “We love to schedule teams like Pennridge and North Penn non-league to get an idea of where we are in regard to the good teams in the district.”

The Redskins trailed 7-6 going into the fifth inning, but a pair of solo homeruns gave them the lead. Bryan Dean and Rick Brebner each blasted four baggers - Brebner’s being the game-winner.

Kevin Ballester pitched two shutout innings of relief behind winning pitcher Corey Jackson. The Skins play North Penn tomorrow and Conwell Egan on Saturday.

“Three games in three days,” said Cox. “It keeps the players out of trouble.”
