Upper Merion (4-4) and Plymouth Whitemarsh (4-4) split a rare doubleheader with the Vikings a 5-4 winner in the first game and the Colonials a 1-0 winner in the second game.
“This was the first time that I have ever managed a doubleheader,” said Upper Merion head coach Jason Darnell. “But it was a great day, and I’m sure that the kids would have played all day.”
Upper Merion – designated as the visiting team in the first game despite playing on its home field – scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to secure the win in game one. Ray Gambone singled home Mike Shannon with the game winner.
Gambone took a trip to the mound and earned the save for the Vikings with a scoreless seventh inning. Gambone threw behind starter-winner Justin Cunnane who tossed the first six innings.
“Justin has really begun to find his confidence,” said Darnell as Cunnane struck out nine hitters and issued only one base on balls. “It was the best game that he has thrown all year.”
In game two, Plymouth Whitemarsh scored a first inning run and made it stand up as the game winner as the Colonials claimed the 1-0 win.
Austin Bonaventure doubled for PW and scored the only run of the game on an RBI single by Jake Mascio.
Steve Wallace picked up the win for the Colonials with a brilliant complete-game, five-hit shutout effort. Wallace had five strikeouts for the winners.
“Wallace pitched a great game for them,” said Darnell. “They played great defense behind him and turned four double plays.
“It was a typical game for Gambone, eight strikeouts and only one walk,” added Darnell as Gambone came back from his one inning of relief in the first game to throw seven innings of one-run ball in the second game. “It is a crime that we never hit the ball well when he is pitching.
“We have lost five of the eight one-run games we have played this year,” continued Darnell. “There is a lot of parity in this league, and the team that gets hot in the second half of the season is going to win this thing.”

Upper Moreland (6-2) remained at the top of the conference standings with an 8-1 victory over host Upper Dublin (1-7).
Golden Bear pitcher Mike Janas took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and allowed just one hit and no runs over his six innings of work.
“Mike seemed to have everything working for him,” said Upper Moreland head coach Ernie Rehr. “He mixed up his pitches, and he was around the plate the entire game.”
Sean McInerney had another outstanding day at the plate with two hits and four RBI. Robert Knox had two RBI for the Bears, while Sean Valenza also had an RBI for the winners.

Central Bucks South (3-3) took a 10-4 lead into the seventh inning but was forced to desperately hold on to a 10-9 victory over Central Bucks West (3-3).
“I guess we didn’t want to make it easy,” said Central Bucks South head coach Mike Schaefer. “Give West a lot of credit, they battled back for those five runs in the seventh inning and had a runner on second that would have tied the game.
“The last out came when (sophomore) Ben Moller made a catch while falling down in left field,” added Schaefer. “Both teams put really good swings on the ball.”
Nobody hit the ball better than Titan junior second baseman Dylan Glassmire. Glassmire was a perfect 4-4 on the day with 5 RBI. He hit a solo homerun in the first inning, and fueled an eight-run CB South third inning with two hits and four RBI.
Junior center fielder Chris Veal cranked a two-run homer for South as he went 2-4 with a pair of RBI.
“We don’t have the biggest home field, and the ball really seemed to fly off the bats today,” said Schaefer. “It turned out to be an exciting baseball game.”
Larry Kelley threw the first four innings to gain the win for the Titans, while Pat Dundon came on to earn a save in the seventh inning.
CB West collected 12 hits, and Nick Heller blasted a homerun for the Bucks.

Pennridge (5-1) moved into a tie for first place with idle North Penn (5-1) in the conference with a 10-3 victory over visiting Quakertown (1-5).
The Ram pitching duo of seniors Oscar Mikols and Dylan Tice tamed the potent Panther bats to secure the win. Mikols threw five-plus innings for the win, while Tice closed the game out with two scoreless innings.
“Oscar wasn’t 100 percent with a sore throat, and he gave us all we could ask for in the first five innings,” said Pennridge head coach Tom Nuneviller. “And is great to have a pitcher like Dylan come in and be able to finish for us.”
The Rams had key hits turned in by senior DH Jared Schaffer. Schaffer – the # 1 pitcher for Pennridge this season – had a perfect 3-3 with a walk and a pair of RBI.
“We really didn’t use Jared that often as a hitter last season,” said Nuneviller. “But he hit very well last year in legion baseball, and he hasn’t disappointed us this year.”
Pennridge was able to score in five of the six innings that it batted. Seniors Mike Guldin and Rocky Ferrier also collected big RBI for the winners.
“It’s always a good feeling for a third base coach to be able to wave runners around,” said Nuneviller – who is the third base coach for the Rams. “We have hit the ball well the last two games.”

Truman (6-0) remained unbeaten in conference play with a 7-3 victory over visiting Abington (3-3).
“We have William Tennent tomorrow, and if we can win that game we would be 7-0 in the first half,” said Truman head coach Jeff Vitale. “I have had some really good teams here, but we never went through a first half at 7-0.”
The Tigers were forced to overcome a 3-0 Abington lead with a six-run fourth inning. Kyle Tepper, Brian Beyer, and Tommy Harmon all came up with clutch hits in the inning.
Senior Zach Philippi earned the win for Truman with a complete game effort.
“I guess you would call him a power pitcher,” said Vitale of his ace. “When he has a great slider, he can be very tough to hit. He can be dominating at times, and we are going to depend on him down the stretch.”

Council Rock North (5-1) remained at the tail of the Tigers with a 9-2 victory over host Neshaminy (3-3).
The Indians feel behind the Skins 2-0, but Rock North scored six runs in the fourth inning to secure the lead. David Pine highlighted the outburst with a three-run homer, while Ryan Henritzy stroked a key two-out, two-run single.
Mike Tentilucci hit a solo homerun for the Indians in the sixth inning.
“We did a lot better hitting their pitcher the second time through the lineup,” said Council Rock North head coach Matt Schram. “But we had a better approach to hitting after seeing him the first time.”
Council Rock North had a strong five-inning performance turned in by winning pitcher Darren Lauer. Lauer finished with six strikeouts and no walks.
Pat O’Leary threw the final two innings for the winners. O’Leary did not allow a hit and struck out three hitters.

Pennsbury (2-4) stopped a four-game conference losing streak with a 6-1 win over visiting William Tennent (0-5).
“Going into spring break, this should be a nice turnaround game for us,” said Pennsbury head coach Joe Pesci. “We lost two tough one-run games to both Neshaminy and Truman, and this should get us going in the right direction.”
Senior Zack Yencha threw four scoreless innings to earn the win for the Falcons. Sophomore Brandon Garrett tossed the final three innings to notch the save.
The offensive load was carried by junior Paul Gosselin with two hits and two RBI, while senior Zack Sibel had two hits and an RBI.

Council Rock South (4-2) gained an important 6-1 victory over host Bensalem (0-5).
“Bensalem really knows how to play the game, and if teams are not ready to play against them, they will get beat,” said Council Rock South head coach Greg Young. “Those kids can play the game.”
Junior Bret DeStefano threw a strong four innings to earn the win, while junior Jeff Miller picked up the save with three strong innings. They combined for nine strikeouts and only one base on balls.
The offense was highlighted by a pair of solo homeruns as Justin Thomas and Ryan Downs went yard. Thomas also excelled at third base.
“Justin made some great, great plays at third base,” said Young. “No disrespect to the other third basemen, but Justin is the best third baseman in the league.”
