Upper Moreland is in the middle of a three game in three days schedule and so far the first place Suburban One League American Conference Golden Bears (8-3, 8-2) have done quite well, thank you, with a pair of critical conference victories.
On Thursday, Upper Moreland rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh inning to stun host Cheltenham (5-8, 4-7) – 7-4. And on Wednesday, the Golden Bears scored early and often in a 10-1 win over host Plymouth Whitemarsh (7-5, 7-4). On Friday, Upper Moreland will host Wissahickon (6-6, 6-4) in still another key SOL American contest.
“Playing back-to-back-to-back is okay for this team as long as we come to each game with the right mindset and the right approach,” said Upper Moreland head coach Ernie Rehr. “We had a tremendous effort to beat PW, and when we fell behind Cheltenham 4-2 going into the last inning I was more than concerned.
“But this team showed me a lot in that seventh inning,” continued Rehr. “We took advantage of some mistakes, and we came up with some key hits to score those five runs.”
The game-winning hit for the Golden Bears came off the bat of Charlie Hooker. Tommy Robinson received the win for the Bears.
“It was great to see us not have a letdown after the PW game,” said Rehr. “And now we have to keep it going against Wissahickon.”

Golden Hawks Soar Back To First Place
Council Rock South (10-1, 7-1) regained sole possession of first place in the SOL National Conference as the Golden Hawks broke open a tight game with a four-run seventh inning to defeat host Truman (3-9, 2-6) – 7-2. The Rock South win – coupled with the Bensalem loss to Pennsbury – gave the Golden Hawks a one-game conference lead over the Owls.
“There is no doubt that you better show up to play each and every game in our conference,” said Council Rock head coach Greg Young. “Truman has given us two really good games this year, and teams like Pennsbury, Abington, and Neshaminy are going to beat people the second half of the season. There are going to be a lot of close games in this conference the second half of the season.”
Ryan Fleming threw the first four innings to earn the victory for the Hawks, while Brian Donnelly fired a three-inning save to secure the win. Kane Price came up with the game-breaking hit – a two-run single – in the seventh inning. Bret DeStefano and Donnelly each chipped in with two hits for the Hawks.

“There really isn’t any team in this conference that is unbeatable,” said Pennsbury head coach Joe Pesci. “We have lost too many close games, and today we played pretty much flawless baseball against a good team. If we can buy into playing mistake-free baseball, we want to win as many games as we can to get back into the mix.”
Paul Gosselin had a no-hitter going into the fifth inning and earned the win. Key hits for the Falcons were delivered by Chris Romano (three RBI double), Brendan Garrett, and Gosselin.
