SOL Baseball Wrap: 4-28-10

Norristown (3-5-1, 3-4-1) won its second consecutive Suburban One League American Conference game as the Eagles soared by host Upper Moreland (5-3, 4-3) – 10-2.

“We got up on them early, and we never left them back in the game,” said Norristown head coach Jim Teeter. “We sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored six runs.”

The offensive surge was spearheaded by John and Brandon Iorio along with Steve Russo. The Eagle offense had 12 hits – all singles.

“We played a lot of little ball today,” said Teeter. “The way the wind was blowing in, and the way that the wet field stopped the balls in the gap, there weren’t going to be too many extra base hits.”

The Eagles actually could have banked some hits for another day. Freshman Evan Grimes threw a complete game for the Birds and permitted just five hits.

“Evan has a 65 miles per hour fastball to go along with a nasty curve and a nasty slider,” said Teeter. “He keeps the hitters off balance, and he really has done that the entire season.”

Grimes also pitched well against both Upper Merion and Upper Dublin in previous starts.

Plymouth Whitemarsh (5-5, 5-2) scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to fuel its 4-3 conference win over Upper Merion (7-3, 6-2).

The key RBIs for the Colonials in the seventh inning came off the bats of Bobby Slagle and Jake Mascio. Slagle slapped a two-run single, while Ellinger roped a solo homer.

Eric Ellinger also homered for PW in the fourth inning – another solo blast.

Upper Merion played some long ball of its own with a three-run first inning. Both Joe Bry and Ben Dworecki connected on four-baggers for the Vikings.

Upper Dublin (6-4-1, 4-3-1) cruised to a 9-1 conference victory over Cheltenham (2-9. 0-8).

Casey Hammond earned the win for the Flying Cardinals. Hammond threw a complete game and yielded just three Panther hits.

Joe Crane and Tim Troyer - who doubled and tripled respectively - sparked the Upper Dublin offense.

Central Bucks South (7-3, 5-3) got out the lumber and spanked host Quakertown (5-3, 3-3) – 20-4 – in a conference game.

“We had an outstanding offensive day,” said Central Bucks South head coach Mike Schaefer. “We took advantage of 13 walks and also had 12 hits. We had a lot of chances to score runs.”

The Titans scored eight runs in the second inning and added seven more runs in the fourth inning.

Sophomore Brian Happ had a terrific day at the plate with two homeruns and five RBI. He also scored four runs.

Jeff Gyza and Joe Mullin also hit the ball hard and often for South.

The Titans also received a superlative game turned in by senior Rich Delgado. Delgado hurled a complete game with seven strikeouts and no bases on balls.

“Rich really pounded the strike zone,” said Schaefer. “He only threw 70 pitches in his five innings, and 57 of those were for strikes.

“This game will get us ready for the Pennridge game tomorrow,” added Schaefer. “We lost to them 4-3 the first time, and they’re the team we have to beat. I like our chances this time around.”

Pennridge (10-2, 6-1) fell behind Central Bucks West (5-6, 3-5) early, 7-1 – but rallied to snatch an 11-7 conference win.

Ryan Trauger earned the win in relief for the Rams as he threw four shutout innings.

Dylan Tice once again led the offensive surge with three hits and five RBI. Ray Puskar came up with the game-winning hit in the fifth inning.

Senior Ryan Sheffer also had a big day for Pennridge with three hits, three runs scored, and a double. Tim Eversole chipped in with two hits.

North Penn (6-4, 4-3) had just one hit – but it was enough to lift the Knights to a 2-0 conference win over Souderton (3-7, 1-6).

The hard-luck loser for the Big Red was Keith Moyer who yielded just a single hit – a two-run homerun off the bat of Mark Fuse. Moyer took a perfect game into the fifth inning.

The North Penn tandem of Bryce Mengel and Austin Tarpey kept the Indians scoreless. Mengel threw five innings to record the win – Tarpey threw the final two to earn the save,

Pennsbury (5-8, 4-4) handed first place Council Rock North (9-1, 6-1) its first loss of the season as the Falcons flew to a 7-0 victory.

Pennsbury’s Tyler Pennett was making his first career start – and it was a memorable start as he tossed a complete seven-strikeout game.

Senior Chris Wiertz led off the game with a homer and ended the game 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs and a pair of stolen bases. Tim Scheaffer went 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs for the winners.

Council Rock South (4-4, 4-3) scored four runs in the second inning on its way to a 7-2 conference win over Truman (5-3, 4-3).

The victory by the Golden Hawks stopped a four-game Tiger winning streak. Justin Thomas went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
