Upper Dublin (11-3, 10-3) kept its ½ game lead in the Suburban One League American Conference as the Flying Cardinals soared to a key 7-3 victory over visiting Wissahickon (7-7, 7-5).

Upper Dublin has now won seven of its last eight games – with the only loss coming in a 6-5 loss to Cheltenham.  The Cardinals and Panthers have a rematch on Wednesday.

“That loss still haunts us a little,” said Upper Dublin head coach Ed Wall.  “We have a chance to redeem ourselves, but we really haven’t thought about this game until now.  There are too many teams that can beat you in our league.

“We really only focus on the team that we are playing,” added Wall as the Cardinals hold a slight conference advantage over Upper Moreland (8-3).  “Cheltenham has lost some close games, and we expect to have a great game with them on Wednesday.”

Upper Dublin took care of business against Wissahickon as senior Eric Goldstein delivered a critical two-run single in the fifth inning to extend a one-run lead.

“Eric came through with that big hit on a 3-2 count with two outs,” said Wall.  “We hit the ball pretty hard the whole game.”

Zac Walsh was the winning pitcher for the Cardinals and threw the first four and two-thirds, while Dan Jacobson earned the save with his two and one-third inning stint.

The Rest of the Story in the SOL American Conference
Upper Moreland (9-4, 9-3) kept pace with Upper Dublin
as the Golden Bears clawed host Norristown (2-12, 2-11) – 7-1.

Upper Moreland received a strong six-inning effort from starter Kyle Walder, while Robert Knox closed the door in the seventh inning.

“We have three games this week, and Upper Dublin has two games,” said Upper Moreland head coach Ernie Rehr.  “It will be interesting to see where everyone is at the end of the week.

“I was impressed with what we got out of our number eight hitter – Pat Driscoll,” added Rehr.  “He is only a sophomore and he had three hits and three RBI’s.”

Plymouth Whitemarsh (9-5, 9-4) remained in contention for the conference lead as the Colonials marched to a 5-4 victory over visiting Cheltenham (5-9, 4-8).

Plymouth Whitemarsh trailed going into the bottom of the seventh inning by a 4-3 count but scored a pair of runs to secure the win.  Junior Jimmy Benedict was in the middle of the big inning as he collected a game-tying RBI and scored what proved to be the winning run moments later.  Mitch Weikert picked up the victory for the Colonials.

Redskins Still A Contender

Neshaminy (6-8, 6-3) has a losing record overall but the Skins are anything but losers as the Redskins rallied to defeat visiting Pennsbury (4-10, 3-6) by an 8-4 score in a Suburban One League National Conference game.

“We are 2-0 in the second half of the season, and our goal is to finish out and win the last five,” said Neshaminy head coach Chris Tenaglia.  “We have Council Rock South (8-1) and Bensalem (7-2) on Wednesday and Friday.  We can’t even think about Friday – we have to focus on Council Rock South next.

“I have been thrilled with the leadership we have gotten this year from our seniors,” added Tenaglia.  “Mike Churilla, Brendon Smith, Matt Sweetser, Drew Pfender, and Colin Dower have been great.”

Ironically, it was the play of sophomore Sean Udris that sparked the Skins in the win over the Falcons.  Udris collected three hits and had four RBI’s batting out of the six hole in the lineup.  Justin Andrews was the winning pitcher throwing the first six innings.

The Rest of the Story in the SOL National Conference
Bensalem (11-2, 7-2) bounced back from its second conference loss as the Owls soared to a 10-1 victory over visiting Truman (3-10, 2-7).

The highlight of the game for HST came on the first at-bat of the game when Joey Schiotis opened the contest with a homerun.  Bensalem rallied to take a 5-1 lead going into the sixth inning and broke the game open with a five-run sixth frame.  Harry Daut had three hits and three RBI to fuel the 15-hit offense for the Owls, while Andy Moser had a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs.

The two pitchers in the game – starter Eric Ruud and reliever Jesse Dannin – combined for 10 strikeouts.  Ruud was the winner and threw the first five innings, while Dannin closed out the game with two scoreless innings.

Council Rock North (8-4, 7-2) broke open a tight 4-3 game with a three run sixth inning as the Indians captured a 7-3 victory over Abington (3-11, 2-7).  The win avenged one of the two conference losses for Rock North.

Nate English was the winning pitcher for the Indians.  The offense was supplied by Aden Tully (two hits – triple – run scored), Brett Newman (two hits – three RBI), and Will Terry (two hits).

Council Rock South (11-1, 8-1) kept a firm hold on first place in the conference as the Golden Hawks shutout William Tennent (4-11, 1-8) – 6-0.

The Bucks Still Stop In First Place

Central Bucks West (11-2, 8-1) continues to lead the pack in the Suburban One League Continental Conference as the Bucks gouged last place Quakertown (2-10, 1-8) – 8-1.

“We have a huge game coming up with North Penn,” said Central Bucks West head coach Jim Ertel as the Knights inflicted the only loss of the season on the Bucks – 6-5.  “We will have Marty Martens throwing in that game, and then we play CB East on Thursday.  I have no idea who will throw Thursday, all we can think about now is North Penn.”

But first the Bucks took care of Quakertown as senior Rich Ciarlante threw six strong innings to collect the win.  Ryan Snyder (double) and Nick Heller (triple) each had two hits, while Mike Bamford came up with a clutch two-run single to highlight a four run second inning.

“We had five extra base hits out of our nine hits,” said Ertel.  “We hit the ball hard and we want that to continue the rest of the week.”

Hatboro-Horsham (10-3, 7-2) kept pace with CB West as the Hatters pulled off a double steal in the bottom of the ninth inning to stun visiting Central Bucks East (5-8, 2-7) – 2-1.

Both starting pitchers – Casey O’Donnell for the Hatters and Blair Killough for the Patriots – were involved in an old-fashioned pitching dual.  O’Donnell and Killough each threw seven innings and allowed just a single run.  Grant Opalisky collected two hits including a double and scored the game-winning run in the ninth inning.

North Penn (10-3, 6-3) kept itself in the conference contending conversation as the Knights survived a 4-3 nine inning victory over visiting Pennridge (8-6, 3-6).

Reed Shuttle was terrific for North Penn as he threw all nine innings – allowed just six hits – and collected 14 strikeouts.  The game-winning run was scored when Nick Marukos scored from first base on a bunt single and throwing error.  Chris Boroch laid down the bunt for the Knights.

Central Bucks South (7-5, 4-5) avenged a first half loss to Souderton (8-4, 5-4) as the Titans captured a 13-3 win over the visiting Indians.  South lost to Souderton by a crazy 22-20 score in the first half of the conference season.
