Suburban One League National Conference

Neshaminy (1-0) finally got some on-field competition as the Redskins opened both the 2011 season and the 2011 SOL National Conference season with a 3-0 victory over visiting Abington (0-1).

“We didn’t have any games or any scrimmages,” said Neshaminy head coach Dennis Cox. “It was great just to get out on the field and see what we got.”

What the Skins got was a wonderfully pitched game from an underclass duo of junior Mike Churilla and sophomore Justin Andrews. Churilla earned the victory with a four-inning shutout stint that limited the Ghosts to just three hits. Andrews earned the save with a three-inning shutout shutout stint that included four strikeouts and only one yielded hit.

“I was thrilled to death to see how both of them pitched,” said Cox. “We lost every single inning of varsity pitching last year, and we weren’t too sure how well we could compete on the varsity level.”

Neshaminy scored what proved to be the game winning runs in the second inning. Matt Sweeter doubled home the first run of the game, and Tom Kreiling followed on the very next pitch with a double to plate Sweeter. The Skins scored an unearned run in the fifth inning.

“We swung the bats like we haven’t played a game this season,” said Cox as the Redskins were limited to just five hits. “But that had a lot to do with their pitcher. He kept us off balance to entire game.”

Greg Mungier was the tough-luck loser for Abington. Mungier permitted just the two earned runs and struck out six hitters over his six innings of work.

Neshaminy will go right back to work tomorrow, as the Skins will play Pennsbury in another SOL National Conference contest.

“Playing two games in two days – after not playing all season - is all right by me,” said Cox. “We just want to play baseball.”

Pennsbury (1-0) opened its SOL National Conference schedule with a convincing 12-3 victory over visiting Bensalem (0-1).

“Zack (Yencha) pitched really well for us,” said Pennsbury head coach Joe Pesci. “He had great control the whole game, and he only walked two batters and had seven strikeouts. We had four errors behind him and that helped them get some of their runs.”

The Falcon offense was sparked by a three-run homerun off the bat of Paul Gosselin that fueled a six-run third inning. All in all, Pennsbury pounded out 12 hits – six for extra base hits. Ken McCormick had a pair of doubles, while Tyler Pennett and Zack Sibel also doubled. Chris Hunter had a triple of the winners.

“We want to gain some momentum with this win,” said Pesci. “We have Neshaminy, Abington, and Council Rock North coming up, and we want to be playing good baseball.”

Suburban One League Continental Conference

Pennridge (1-0) opened its defense of the SOL Continental Conference championship with a 10-3 victory over visiting Central Bucks South (0-1).

“We really came out hitting the ball much better than we did in the first game of the year,” said Pennridge head coach Tom Nuneviller. “We had 12 hits today, and we only had two hits the first game (in a 2-0 non-league loss to Palisades).

“The game was 6-3 going into the bottom of the sixth inning,” added Nuneviller. “And we were able to break it open with the three runs we scored in the bottom of that inning.”

The big hit in the game for Pennridge came on a homerun by Jon Unangst. Unangst finished the game with three runs batted in.

Senior right-hander Jared Schaffer threw a complete game for the Rams and permitted just a single earned run. Pennridge played every well behind him in the field with three double plays.

“Jared threw a great game – got ahead of the hitters,” said Nuneviller. “We are searching for pitchers to back him up. It would be nice to be able to score 10 runs every game.”

Central Bucks West (1-0) jumped out to a 9-0 lead but the Bucks were forced to hold on to defeat host Souderton (0-1).

“We had the big lead, but give them credit for coming back and making it a game,” said Central Bucks West head coach Jim Ertel. “We really didn’t hit the ball all that well, but we were able to take advantage of having a lot of base runners.”

Souderton pitchers were off the mark as the Big Red hurlers permitted 14 bases on balls.

West scored five runs – with one hit – in the first inning and added four more runs in the fourth inning to take the 9-0 lead. The big hits in that fourth frame were an RBI double by senior Collin Ingoldsby and a two-run single by Pat Bradley.

Marty Martens earned the win throwing the first five innings for the Bucks.

The Souderton comeback was fueled by catcher Jake Ebersole. Ebersole blasted a grand slam homer for the Big Red in the fourth inning, and had an RBI double in the fifth inning.

Suburban One League American Conference

Upper Moreland (3-1) received a gutty performance from junior Mike Janas as the Golden Bears clawed visiting Cheltenham (1-3) – 9-1.

“The secret is out – Mike has been pitching with a broken thumb,” said Upper Moreland head coach Ernie Rehr. “He hurt it earlier in the year, and it is almost healed. He pitched today like we know he can pitch.”

The Upper Moreland right-hander threw six innings and allowed just four hits.

The Golden Bear offense was picked up by senior Kyle Lockhard who went a perfect 4-for-4, while sophomore Matt Kohn had three hits that included a triple and three RBI. Upper Moreland pounded out 16 hits on the day.

“Kyle is our number nine hitter, and everything worked for him today swinging the bat,” said Rehr. “And Matt is our number one hitter and did a great job of getting on base.”

The Upper Merion offense showcased a three hit performance by Kyle Gaffney. Ray Gambone had two hits for the Vikings, while John DeKollo had a pair of RBI.
