Pennridge (2-0) has a terrific one-two pitching punch with seniors Jared Schaeffer and Oscar Mikols, and it was Mikols who delivered the knockout blow to North Penn (1-1) as the Rams defeated the Knights, 4-1.

“Oscar pitched very well for us against a good team,” said Pennridge head coach Tom Nuneviller. “He mixed it up with his breaking ball and his fast ball. He threw everything for strikes.”

Last season as a junior, Mikols was a standout pitcher for Faith Christian Academy. He played his sophomore season with Pennridge on the junior varsity team.

The Rams had a superlative game played on the field by senior shortstop Dylan Tice. Tice –who had three hits that included a double and triple – also made some outstanding plays in the field. Tice will play baseball next season at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

“Dylan has a way of making extremely tough plays in the field look routine,” said Nuneviller. “He and the rest of the team made some very nice plays behind Oscar. Rocky Ferrier and Mike Guldin made some really nice plays in the outfield, and (catcher) Kyle Peters threw a kid out in the first inning trying to steal.”

Ferrier – in addition to his fine defensive game – collected three hits and drove home a pair of runs for the Rams.

Pennridge will play at Central Bucks East on Monday, while North Penn has a scheduled game with Central Bucks East tomorrow.

Central Bucks West (2-0) rebounded twice to defeat visiting Quakertown (1-1) – 9-8.

“I told the players after the game that it showed a lot of guts to come back the way that we did,” said Central Bucks West head coach Jim Ertel. “We didn’t really play that great a game in the field with five errors, but we were able to overcome it and win the game.”

The Bucks used textbook baseball to claim the win in the bottom of the seventh inning. Mike Bamford singled – stole second base – was bunted to third base – and scored the game winner on a single by Matt Hanson.

“We’re 2-0 in the league, and we have to be happy with that,” said Ertel. “We have swung the bats well.”

Suburban One League National Conference

Council Rock North received a combined no-hitter from senior Patrick O’Leary and Darren Lauer as the Indians collected a 9-0 conference victory over Abington (0-2).

“Both of them threw the ball extremely well,” said Council Rock North head coach Matt Schram. “The plan was for them to pitch no more than 60 pitches, and everything went according to plan.”

O’Leary – who made his first career start for the Indians - threw the first four innings for Rock North, while Lauer hurled the final three innings.

“The score was a little deceiving in that we really didn’t hit the ball all that well,” said Schram. “We were able to bunch some hits and score some runs. The Abington pitchers did a good job of keeping us off balance.”

Benn Parker who collected two hits and had three RBI fueled the Indian offense. David Pine also had two hits and scored a pair of runs. Alex Sable delivered a two-run single in the second inning to provide what proved to be the game-winning hit.

Neshaminy (2-0) received a clutch two-out, two-run homerun by senior Kelsey Koellner to forge a 4-4 deadlock in the sixth inning and the Redskins rallied for a 5-4 nine-inning victory over Pennsbury (1-1). The game winning hit came in the last of the ninth inning on a bases loaded – one out – single by senior Brett Boyer.

The Skins received terrific relief pitching from the duo of freshman Cole Creighton and junior Brendon Smith to close out the game.

“Cole threw a great four innings for us,” said Neshaminy head coach Dennis Cox. “And Brendon didn’t allow a run over his two innings and got the win.

“We were hoping for the best these last two days,” added Cox. “We wanted to get five pitchers a chance to work – we did that – and we got two wins. We knew we were young coming into the season, and now we have a good taste of what it takes to win games.”

Suburban One League American Conference

Norristown (3-1) came up with a huge 6-3 victory over Wissahickon (2-2) in the very competitive SOL American Conference.

“We have some very balanced teams in this conference,” said Norristown head coach Jim Teeter. “The teams that are at the top of the standings now, might not be there at the end of the season.   It is going to be an interesting year.”

Norristown senior Roddy Vaughn survived a rocky start to go the distance for the Eagles and earned the victory.

“Roddy gave up the three runs early, but he is the type of pitcher that gets stronger as the game goes on,” said Teeter. “He battles and he came through with a good game.”

The Eagle bats featured a two-run homerun by junior Kevin McGinley, a pair of doubles by John Iorio, and an RBI double by Luke DiBussolo.

“We still haven’t hit the ball this year like we should,” said Teeter. “But our pitchers have done a really good job.”

Norristown Eagles                 3     0     0     0     0     2     1     -      6       10   0
Wissahickon Trojans                    1     0     1     1     0     0     0     -       3     8    3

Upper Moreland (4-1) remained on top of the conference standings with a 13-11 victory over Upper Dublin (0-2) in a suspended game that began last Thursday.

“This was one crazy game,” said Upper Moreland head coach Ernie Rehr. “We began the game in the rain, and it seemed like there must have been 20 walks in the first couple of innings.”

Upper Dublin scored eight runs in the second inning to take an 8-1 lead, but Upper Moreland scored 10 runs in the bottom of the second inning to regain the lead at 11-8.

The winning pitcher for the Golden Bears – who managed just six hits in scoring 13 runs – was Robert Knox. Knox also tripled for the winners, while Matt Kohn slapped a double.

Upper Moreland will host Wissahickon on Monday, while Upper Dublin will be on the road Monday at Upper Merion.
