SOL Freedom Division
NEW HOPE-SOLEBURY 8, SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP 4
For the second time in less than 24 hours, the Lions took on the Spartans – this time on the road, and for the second time in as many days, they notched the win.
Once again, the Lions got off to a fast start, plating four runs in the top of the first. Three of those runs scored with the benefit of just one hit. Kyle Campbell lined a leadoff single to left, and Josh Shiller and Brooks Saft drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Campbell scored on a wild pitch, and Shiller raced home Matt Jermyn’s sac fly to right field. An errant throw on the play allowed Saft to score as well. Justin Lehman followed with a double, and he scored when Matt Spadavecchia singled, giving the Lions a 4-0 lead.
In the top of the third, Saul Carmenini’s RBI single gave the Lions a five run lead. The Spartans made it a 5-2 game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Quadire Eberhardt lined a single to left to open the inning and Will Conlin followed with a single to center. A double by Dan Matthews drove in two runs.
A three-run fifth included a Matt Rickert RBI single, and the Lions led 8-2. Back-to-back doubles by Matthews and Ryan Stewart (2 RBIs) made it an 8-4 game in the sixth, which stood until the game’s final out.
Josh Shiller earned the win. He allowed three hits and two runs in five innings, striking out five and walking none. Saul Carmenini closed it out, allowing two hits and two runs in two innings. He struck out three and walked one.
“Both Josh and Saul were dominant with all their pitches today.” NHS coach Tony Vlahovic said. “They pounded the strike zone, and our defense was flawless.”
Matthews was 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBIs to lead the Spartans.
New Hope-Solebury (8-6-1, 7-6-1 SOL) will travel to Upper Moreland for a key division game on Tuesday, and Springfield Township (1-13, 1-12) will host William Tennent on Monday.
