SOL Patriot Division
NESHAMNY 2, BENSALEM 0
Chase Bonner pretty much did it all in Wednesday’s regular season finale.
The Neshaminy junior turned in what is becoming a routinely excellent performance on the mound, tossing a three-hit, complete game shutout. For good measure, he singled in the game’s first run, which turned out to be the game-winner.
“Chase Bonner was incredible once again on the mound today and carried a no hitter into the fifth inning,” Neshaminy coach Dan Toner said. “He has not given up a run in his last 20 innings.”
The Redskins needed strong outing from Bonner on a day when Bensalem’s Jimmy McGinty was turning in a gem of his own, scattering five hits in five innings and allowing two runs – only one earned.
Neshaminy added an insurance run in the fourth inning when Nick Sassano collected a two-out double and scored on Jake Pleboni’s RBI single.
With the win, the Redskins tied Pennsbury for the best record in the SOL Patriot, but the Falcons won the tiebreaker, taking the season series between the two teams 2-1.
By the numbers: Neshaminy: Chase Bonner (W) (7.0 IP, 3H, 0R, 3BB, 4K, 1-for-2, 1RBI), Jake Plebani (2-for-3, 2B, 1RBI), Noah Wallace (2-for-3), Nick Sassano (2B)
Bensalem: Jimmy McGinty (5.0 IP, 5H, 2R, 1ER, 4BB, 3K)
Key inning: Bottom of first: Plebani reached base on an error and was replaced by courtesy runner Dylan Hollenbach, who moved up to second on a groundout and scored when Bonner helped his own cause with an RBI single.
Bottom of fourth: With two outs, Sassano lined a double to center field, and Pleboni’s single to right field plated Sassano with an insurance run.
Neshaminy coach Dan Toner: “I’m very happy with our record to end the season. We weren’t sure how it was going to go, because we were so young and unproven…but we matured very fast as a team.
“Our bats weren’t there today at the plate - we have been struggling a little of late, but our defense and more so our pitching was very good.
“We left a ton of runners on base and just couldn’t come up with a big hit. I feel like we should have been able to put up 8-10 runs. Luckily, we were in no danger throughout the game with Chase on the mound.”
--Props: “Offensively Jake Plebani has been locked in. He had another multi hit game. Chase Bonner, besides pitching a gem, also had our first RBI.”
Up next: Neshaminy (13-6, 11-4 SOL) – sixth in the latest District 1 6A rankings – awaits its final seed. Bensalem (12-8, 7-8) is 26th in the latest rankings in what will be a 24-team field.
