Central Bucks South (7-4) was crushed by graduation coming into the 2011 season, but the Titans are a solid second behind conference leading Pennridge (9-2) in the standings.

“I told the players at the beginning of the season that (the media) isn’t going to be writing much about our chances,” said CB South head coach Mike Schaefer as South lost 10 players to diplomas. “I told them I was fine with that – we’ll let them write about us at the end of the season.

“We have been playing our best baseball of the season lately,” added Schaefer as the Titans have won six of their last seven games. “I am extremely happy with the way we are playing – and we’re doing it with an underclass group.”

All eight of the Titan position players are underclassmen. Brian Happ, Dylan Glassmire, Kyle Lewis, Will Sasser, Chris Veal, and Chris Coia are all juniors. Jon Mullin, Ricky Dennis, Ben Moller, and Will Foy are just sophomores.

“Jon Mullin was a real find as a sophomore catcher,” said Schaefer. “And the other underclassmen have all stepped up during the course of the year with big hits.”

The Titans have a huge home game tomorrow night, as South will host district rival Central Bucks East (6-5) under the lights. Game time for the Senior Night affair is scheduled for six o’clock.

“It is a huge game for the kids,” said Schaefer. “We get to play our rival in East, it’s Senior Night, it’s an important league game, and they beat us the last time. And we get to play the game under the lights.

“Right now, CB East is going for the Central Bucks sweep,” added Schaefer. “They have beaten CB West twice and us once. Another win gives them four in a row over the CB schools. For our kids, there is a little more on the line than a regular league game. We are all very excited.”

CB South prepped for the CB East game with an 11-1 non-league win over Abington in a game that featured a four pitcher no-hitter. Larry Kelley, Bobby Whitmann, Paul Zalrewski, and Pat Dundon combined for the no-no that was stopped after the sixth inning due to the ‘mercy-rule’.

“We want to finish the season strong,” said Schaefer. “Of the last three league games, we lost to both East and Hatboro-Horshamthe first time we played them. We would like to beat them and see exactly where we stand at the end of the season.”

CB East prepped for the CB South game with a key 7-3 conference victory over Hatboro-Horsham (4-7).

Kris Davis threw a complete game to earn the win and helped himself with a big two-run double in the sixth inning to break the game open.

“We are in desperate mode right now,” said Central Bucks East head coach Kyle Dennis. “We have to try to win them all, and we have a tough game coming up with South. Jason Goldberg is a senior, and he wants the ball tomorrow. He will do a good job.”

The ‘Curse of the Tiger’ is over for Pennsbury (5-7). The Falcons defeated Truman (8-4) for the first time in 10 meetings as they flew to a 9-2 victory over the Tigers.

“It’s been a long, long time coming,” said Pennsbury head coach Joe Pesci – now in his second year at the helm for the Falcons. “They beat us by a single run (4-3) in the first game this year. Brandon Garrett pitched a great game in that loss with 10 strikeouts, but we played poorly in the field behind him with four errors. You can’t give good teams like Truman extra outs, and we didn’t give them extra outs today.”

Garrett won his first varsity game – and it won’t be his last.

“Brandon throws extremely hard and has developed a good change up,” said Pesci. “He has a great overall attitude and wants the ball against the best teams. He has had tough losses against some of the best teams in the league.

“We have five wins, but if we were able to win those one-run games against Truman, Neshaminy (5-4), and Council Rock North (4-3), we would have had a winning season,” continued Pesci. “But we didn’t field the ball cleanly early in the season, and we really didn’t hit all that well. The last few games, with the exception of the Council Rock North game, we have averaged around 10 hits a game.”

The Falcons have had a collection of juniors swing good bats in that stretch.

Chris Romano blasted a two-run homer to spark the win over Truman, while Marc Pepin smacked a triple that scored a pair of runs. Paul Gosselin has also come up with some clutch hits for the Falcons in recent games.

Cheltenham (6-9) received a fresh look from Kevin Graham as the Panthers rallied to defeat Wissahickon (6-9) – 7-5.

“Kevin is only a freshman, but he has played great since we brought him up from the junior varsity,” said Cheltenham head coach Frank Decembrino. “He had two good games in the doubleheader we played against Upper Dublin, and he got the big hit for us today against Wissahickon.”

Graham – a designated hitter for the Panthers – has gone 5-for-8 in his three varsity games. He delivered a critical RBI triple in the win over the Trojans.

Matt Lawlor also tripled for Cheltenham and drove home a pair of runs. The Panther hitting attack managed just four hits – but took advantage of four Wissahickon errors.

“Wissahickon left us in the game, but we came up with the big hits when we needed them,” said Decembrino. “And John Craig took advantage of his opportunity to pitch to win the his first ever varsity game. He threw four complete innings to get the win.

“We have been pitching pretty well all season, and John didn’t get too many chances to pitch this year,” added Decembrino. “But with all the games we have to play, I have to be a magician just like every other coach in our conference.”
