Central Bucks South (1-0) played a complete game as the Titans opened the 2012 baseball season with an 11-0 victory over host Wissahickon (0-1).

“We really had a slow start hitting the baseball in practice,” said Central Bucks South head coach Mike Schaefer.  “I was pleasantly surprised that we were able to come up with 13 hits today.  With the new bats, the ball comes off the bat like a wood bat, and I wasn’t too sure how it was going to affect the way that we hit the ball.”

CB South not only collected a five-inning mercy rule victory with a flurry of hits, but the Titans played errorless baseball and received fine pitching from a trio of hurlers – Ricky Dennis, Pat Dundon, and Bobby Whittemann.  The threesome allowed just two hits – one walk – and one hit batter.

“We did a good job of making them hit the baseball,” said Schaefer.  “And offensively, we had all nine starters get base hits.”

Brian Happ, Chris Coia, Will Sasser, and Will Foy each collected a pair of hits for the Titans.  Foy smoked a double and led the team in RBIs.

“We played like a very strong team today – hitting, pitching, and defense,” said Schaefer.  “But this is only the first game of the season – there is still a very long way to go.”

Souderton (1-0) hopped on a bus and traveled to the Cal Ripken Stadium complex in Aberdeen Maryland and collected an impressive 6-0 victory over fellow Suburban One League rival Plymouth Whitemarsh (0-1).  The Big Red broke open a tight 2-0 game with a four-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach for PW.

“Plymouth Whitemarsh has a senior dominated team, and to come up with a win was a great way for us to start the season,” said Souderton head coach Michael Childs.  “(Winning pitcher) Evan Porter looked great today with no walks in four innings of work.  He threw a lot of off speed stuff and kept them off balance.  And Brian Gibbs came in and also did a good job.

“Plus, we hit some shots today,” added Childs as the Indians blasted five extra base hits against Colonial pitching.  “Scott (Giuliano) hit a homerun that was over 370 feet and cleared the fence.”

Souderton senior Ryan Gryzwacz collected a triple and a double for the Indians.  Junior Stephen Hink and senior Corey Capaldi each doubled for the winners.

“We have some big kids, and we hit some big fly balls in the gaps,” said Childs.  “We have been hitting the ball in practice, and we hope that will continue the rest of the season.”

Quakertown (1-0) collected a season opening mercy-rule victory as the Panthers clawed visiting Palisades (0-1) – 12-2.

“The weather is deceiving, this is still very early in the season to expect a lot,” said Quakertown head coach Steve Cherrybon.  “We did a decent job of hitting the baseball, we played good defense, and Brandon Kulp threw a very nice game for this early in the year.

“Brandon had an outstanding fast ball, and I think that his curve will get better as the season goes along,” added Cherrybon as Kulp fired five shutout innings with no hits and eight strikeouts.  “Our goal is to be competitive in our league (SOL Continental), and this was a nice way to start our season.”

The big bats for the Panthers were carried by Eric Sloss (3-3 with 2 RBI), Alex Dyer (2-3 with 3 RBI), and Mike Potynski (2-4 with an RBI).

Pennsbury (1-0) emerged with a wacky 10-9 victory over visiting Conwell Egan.  The Falcons scored a pair of runs in the last of the seventh inning as the winners did not have a single base hit - but collected five walks to secure the win.

“I have never seen anything like it,” said Pennsbury head coach Joe Pesci.  “We had first and second with two outs, but we were patient and able to get three walks to win the game.”

Senior Mark Peppin coaxed a base on balls with the bases loaded that tied the score, and junior pinch hitter Mike Havermehl walked moments later to plate the game winner.

Pennsbury did collect six hits in the game with one being a huge three-run homer off the bat of senior Luke Zaccarelli.  Senior Tyler Pennett collected the only other Falcon extra base hit – a double.

“We had 13 walks and they hit three of our hitters,” said Pesci.  “We did a good job of being selective at the plate.”
