Suburban One League National Conference

Neshaminy (12-4 overall, 7-2 SOL National Conference) moved into sole possession of the conference penthouse with a 56-31 victory over Council Rock South (6-9, 3-6).

“It’s nice to be in first place, but we all know how quickly things can change,” said Neshaminy head coach Jerry Devine. “We have to take care of our own business, and we have the toughest part of our schedule still ahead of us.”

The Redskins took care of biz against South, blowing open a tight first quarter to snatch a 15-point lead by the close of the first half.

“We pressured them and they turned the ball over quite a few times,” said Devine. “In fact, we had nine turnovers in the first half.

“Ryan (Arcidiacono) had a great game tonight,” added Devine of his super sophomore who had 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. “He got the ball to both Mike (McGarry) and Dwight (Williams) in great shape under the basket.”

Williams – who hit the game winning shot against Norristown in the last Skins game – finished with a game-high 17 points. McGarry also scored in twin digits for the winners with 12 points.

Council Rock South was led in scoring by Cody Nowlin with 10 points.

“We need to focus on each game that we play,” said Devine. “We have some very good teams left on the schedule, and we can’t look passed anyone.”

Central Bucks East (7-7, 4-5) reversed an early season loss to Quakertown (8-8, 4-5) with a 62-48 win over the visiting Panthers.

“I watched the film of the first game, and their pressure really hurt us in the second quarter,” said Central Bucks East coach Chris Huber in reference to the disastrous 23-4 result in the second period during the Panthers 63-42 win. “I thought about showing the players the film, but I didn’t want to scare them.

“We spent a lot of time in practice working on their pressure,” added Huber. “They ran pretty much the same stuff, and we handled it much better.

“Instead of them stealing the ball and getting lay-ups, we broke their pressure and got lay-ups,” continued Huber. “That was the difference in the two games.”

The Patriots had a double-double turned in by 6-foot, 5-inch freshman Matt Stauffer and 6-1 Scott Shields. Stauffer had 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Shields finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

“We have brought Matt around slowly,” said Huber. “He seems much more comfortable on the floor.

“And David (Kiersnowski) continues to be our scorer,” added Huber. “He had an explosive third period and ended up scoring 23 points.”

Quakertown was led in scoring by Kenny Gula with 22 points. Dalton Nice (12) and Rick Kivela (10) also scored in twin digits for the Panthers.

Plymouth Whitemarsh (16-0, 9-0) proved that it was not about to look ahead to Friday’s game with Imhotep Charter (@ Villanova) or Sunday’s game with St. Benedict’s (@ Parkland HS) as the unbeaten Colonials routed visiting Wissahickon (12-4, 6-3) – 77-49.

“Wissahickon and Norristown are probably our biggest rivals in the league,” said Plymouth Whitemarsh head coach Jim Donofrio. “The players always look forward to playing those teams – especially in our home gym.

“We have not been shooting free throws well lately,” added Donofrio. “We need to get that out of our heads.”

That ‘problem’ was corrected in the win over Wissahickon. PW shot an efficient 18 of 23 from the charity stripe – 78 percent.

Another ‘problem’ – if such a thing exists with an unbeaten team – was that the Colonials’ scoring has fallen lately on the duo of senior C.J. Aiken and Jaylen Bond.

That ‘problem’ was corrected as the Colonials had five players score in double figures in the win over Wissahickon.

Aiken – who has committed to St. Joseph’s University next year – was still terrific. The 6-foot, 9-inch senior had a triple-double – 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 blocked shots.

Sam Pygatt scored 15 points for the winners, while Whis Grant (13), Bond (13), and Brandon Dixon (11) also scored in twin digits for PW.

Wissahickon was led in scoring by senior Jack O’Neill. O’Neill – who scored 31 points in the last two Trojan games – was ‘held’ to 17 points.

Norristown (12-4, 7-2) moved into sole possession of second place in the conference standings with a 67-50 victory over Upper Merion (5-11, 2-7).

The Vikings played the host Eagles tough in the first half as the game was tied at 26-26. Norristown – led in scoring by Chris Davis with 28 points – outscored Upper Merion 41-24 in the second half to coast to the win.

Upper Dublin (9-5, 6-3) outscored host Springfield (3-13, 0-9) by a 14-0 first period margin. However, the Spartans rallied and actually led by three points in the final period before losing to the Flying Cardinals – 48-40.

Jamil Brown led Upper Dublin to the win with a 24-point performance. Chris Crudele led Springfield with 12 points.

Cheltenham (7-9, 5-4) trailed Upper Moreland (2-15, 1-8) 15-10 at the end of the first quarter, but the Panthers rallied for a 58-52 win.

The Panthers were led in scoring by Rob Mansell with a game-high 28 points, while Ryan Burnick led the Golden Bears with a team-high 13 points.
