National Conference

William Tennent 57, Council Rock North 49
During Coach Robert Mulville’s seven years with William Tennent, the Panthers had never figured out a way to beat Council Rock North.
That was before Friday night when Tennent defeated CR North by a score of 57-49 in a Suburban One National Conference opener at Council Rock North High School.
The Panthers (2-1, 1-0) were led by Matt Alden in the win. Alden, a four-year varsity player, scored a game-high 27 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.
“I thought our guys played really well, especially Alden,” Mulville said.  “He’s playing with a lot of focus and heat right now, and we had a good scouting report tonight on how he should cover his guy and he did great.
“We told him that they’d play box-and-one and run a couple guys at him, and we told Matt to just keep his composure and he did.”
John Ryan also added 14 points – 13 of which came in the second half – while Ian Drumm brought down seven rebounds.  CR North was down 16 heading into the third and the cut the deficit to four points with a minute left in the game, but Tennent prevailed in the end.
“CR North played really well, too,” Mulville said.  “They really hung in there.  It got a little shaky in the fourth quarter, and they hung in together and tried to answer back the best they could.  They started really scoring a lot and we were missing our free throws and they didn’t hang their heads and they tried to answer back.  But in the end, I was just really happy for our guys.
“For them, it was a great win by itself because some of these guys who have been four-year starters have never gone up against CR North and won.  It was a huge win and it was a good confidence booster.  I know they have to keep working, too.  I don’t think they’re going to rest on this one win.  They want to keep getting better.”
The Indians (1-2, 0-1) were led by Josh McWilliams, who scored 19 points. Chris Rowland also added 13 while Matt Margolis chipped in with eight.
Tennent will now prepare for its Sunday afternoon meeting with Archbishop Wood, a game that was postponed from Saturday due to impending snow.

PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 62, UPPER MORELAND 39
MURRAY SHINES AS PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH OVERWHELMS UPPER MORELAND
By Jesse Bernstein for SuburbanOneSports.com
Junior guard Jimmy Murray scored nine of his game high 18 points in the first quarter and the Colonials blew out the Golden Bears, 62-39.
A physical game from the outset, Plymouth Whitemarsh’s pressing defense wreaked havoc for the first quarter, holding Upper Moreland to just three made baskets as the Colonials quickly took a 17-8 lead. Murray, along with senior guard Brett Paul, harassed the Golden Bear ball handlers from the moment they received the ball and picked off numerous cross-court passes.
Upper Moreland was able to stay in it during the second, feeding junior forward Raekwon Smith in the post again and again. Smith scored all five of his points in the quarter, and Plymouth Whitemarsh led only 32-25 at the half.

The Colonials backed off of the press in the second half, and that spelled the end for the Golden Bears. Stellar perimeter defense from Murrary and Paul made it difficult for Upper Moreland to advance more than a few feet past halfcourt, and more than a few attempted swing passes resulted in players from both sides tangled in a heap on the floor, fighting for tipped balls.
Plymouth Whitemarsh would hold Upper Moreland to 14 points in the second half, including a stingy four in the third quarter.  Aside from the a couple of PW senior guard Manuel Herezi 3’s drained with defenders in his face, the second half was largely a quiet, methodical Plymouth Whitemarsh-style demolishment of Upper Moreland.

Wissahickon 73, Upper Dublin 49 (Thursday, Dec. 12)
Wissahickon’s Chase Wilson had a big night, knocking down six three-pointers en route to a 22-point night in a 73-49 Trojans win over Upper Dublin in a battle of neighborhood rivals at Upper Dublin High School on Thursday night.
Chris Vila and Todd Bentley both added 10 points for Wissahickon.  The Trojans (2-1, 1-0) outscored the Cardinals in all four quarters.  Chris Carradorini also added nine points for Wissahickon.
“I would say when you have big wins like this, you’re not as good as the score showed and you have one team that wasn’t as bad, and you have to put it into perspective, but it was a dog fight,” Wissahickon coach Kyle Wilson said.  “Chase Wilson caught fire in the first two quarters, and it was a dagger and a back-breaker for Upper Dublin.
“We were just glad to be able to continue to pull away, but there were a lot of contributions from everyone on the bench and that was great to see.  When you have a well-balanced win against your rival and with such a good crowd there, it’s a really nice win to get.”
Upper Dublin (1-2, 0-1) was led by Simeon Fryer’s 13 points, while John Barrett and Zach Greenberg each added 10.  Kevin Woods chipped in with eight.
Wissahickon shot 22-for-30 from the free throw line.  The Trojans played excellent defense, led by Todd Bentley.
“Todd had his hands in on a lot of plays and a lot of pressure on the ball,” Wilson said.  “Stephen Driscoll also made some nice steals and had some nice assists, but there were some guys who definitely didn’t show up on the score sheet that played really well.”
Wissahickon (2-1, 1-0 SOL) is now off until Tuesday, when the Trojans will host Springfield in another league meeting.
