Souderton 54, Wissahickon 51
When starting point guard Steve Shaffer went down with an injury, someone had to step up for Souderton. And when he was called upon to step up, Carter Knight did that job as well as his coach could’ve ever asked.
After putting up nine points in the opening quarter to give the Indians the early lead, Knight hit two huge shots in the third and added another six points in the fourth while helping the Indians to a 54-51 win over Wissahickon in the Wissahickon Holiday Tournament championship game on Friday.
The Indians (5-3, 1-2) went back and forth with the Trojans all game, but came out with the victory in the end thanks mostly to the play of Knight.
“I took this job two years ago and they told me he was a nice JV point guard,” Souderton coach Pete Chimera said. “He just continues to work and work and work, and he’s a beast. He is just unbelievable. He controlled the game, he played great defense, and he shoots the heck out of the ball.”
Knight added five rebounds, and it was the senior guard, who earned tournament MVP honors, burying a pair from the foul line with seven seconds remaining to give the Indians a three-point advantage. The Trojans’ trey at the buzzer for the tie bounced harmlessly off the rim, and the Indians had locked up the huge win before league play resumes.
“When Shaffer went down, Tim Markow stepped up his game huge and it was a huge win for us,” Knight said. “We knew we just had to play good defense and this win means a lot for us. When we get back, that momentum is huge and we’re going to take it into our league games.”
Markow finished with 11 points and a pair of assists while Ben Wonderling came off the bench to score six in the fourth quarter alone, connecting on 3-for-4 from the foul line down the stretch.
“Ben hit a huge three for us and made some foul shots,” Chimera said. “He hasn’t played much, but he was huge for us. It was a great win and Wissahickon is a good team.”
Souderton led by one point after one quarter and by five at the half (26-21). After the Trojans went up by four points in the third, Knight hit two huge shots in the final minute and put Souderton on top by one entering the fourth (38-37).
The Trojans (4-3, 1-1) were led by Chase Wilson’s 21 points. Wilson drained five three-pointers, four of which came in the first half. Todd Bentley and Chris Vila added 12 and nine points, respectively, for the Trojans.
Vila and Wilson were both named to the All-Tournament team, as was Souderton’s Evan Slone, who finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Central Bucks South 50, Council Rock North 41
With a couple of days off and not much practice time, Central Bucks South got off to a slow start on Friday against Council Rock North. But after getting into foul trouble and allowing the Indians to go on top early on, the Titans buckled down and played arguably their best defense of the season.
With Josh Brodie leading the way defensively, CB South came out with a 50-41 win over host CR North in the Athletes Helping Athletes Tournament on Friday night.
Brodie covered Josh McWilliams, who led the Indians with 15 points, but McWilliams was unable to score a single point in the fourth quarter with Brodie blanketing him in man-on-man defense.
“Josh was great,” CB South coach Jason Campbell said. “He picked him up full court, and while he’s had some good games this season defensively, I think tonight was his best effort of the season and he did a great job.”
Campbell rotated several players on defense, putting Matt Scamuffo on McWilliams at one point, but in the end, Brodie’s defensive play with the game on the line was crucial.
In a tight game from start to finish, the Titans trailed 8-2 early on after committing the first six fouls of the game. With a couple players in foul trouble, CB South was forced to buckle down and erased a five-point first quarter deficit with a strong second quarter. The Indians still led by two at the half (24-22), and after the teams exchanged points in a 9-9 third quarter, CB South’s 19-8 advantage in the fourth was the difference.
“It was a pretty tight game the whole way,” Campbell said. “We just kind of got better as the game went on. We had a couple days off for the holiday and we were sluggish, but overall, our defense is what won us the game, especially in the second half.
The Titans held Chris Rowland, who is usually CR North’s top scorer, to only 10 points. Steve Nowmos also added 10 for the Indians.
Bryce Dobisch led the Titans with 14 points while Scamuffo added 13. CB South improved to 4-4 overall with the win, and will face St. Paul (MD) at 7:30 on Saturday night in the tournament’s championship game.
“It’s going to be a tough game tomorrow,” Campbell said. “St. Paul has a strong team and they have some size and good athletes, so it’s going to be a good test for us. I think it’ll come down to the end, and hopefully, we can play good enough defense again and execute on offense.”

Pennridge 67, Governor Mifflin 62
Despite losing starting senior Pat McClatchy to a broken ankle just over a week ago, Pennridge has figured out a way to move forward.
With players such as Dan Long and Steve Lowry getting more minutes and with big man Mike Tatarowicz stepping in to replace McClatchy, the Rams have continued to play well together.
That team chemistry was on display on Friday afternoon when the Rams defeated Governor Mifflin 67-62 in the first round of the Boyertown Bear Classic holiday tournament.
“The game got off to a rough start,” Pennridge coach Dean Behrens said. “There was not a lot of energy in the gym, with it being a 4:30 game. It was a game with a lot of runs by both teams. We came out in the second half and went up by seven, but they kept coming right back at us.”
In the end, the Rams’ free throw shooting, which struggled for much of the night, helped to keep them on top.
Although his team shot 17-for-29 from the stripe, Dan Long, who finished with a game-high 23 points, went 9-for-11 from the line and iced the game in the fourth quarter.
“We were shooting fine at the line before tonight, but we struggled there,” Behrens said. “But guys like Dan stepped up and so did (Steve) Lowry.”
Lowry, who has been seeing more minutes since McClatchy went down, finished with nine points – all on three-pointers.
“Steve really stepped up after struggling for the first half of the year,” Behrens said. “He wasn’t hitting many shots, but tonight, he came up big. Pat gave us a lot of senior leadership and did a ton for us with his experience and his ability to defend and rebound, but now we’re making more rotation changes and giving guys other minutes and Steve played really well today.”
In the win, the Rams 15-12 at the end of one quarter but trailed 33-30 at the half. In the third quarter, Pennridge (6-2) came out big and outscored Governor Mifflin 18-9 and eventually held on in the fourth quarter for the victory.
Tatarowicz finished with four points in his starting role, while Zach Muredda added 17. Joe Molettiere chipped in with nine for the Rams, who will face Southern Lehigh Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the tournament’s championship game.
“I think it’s a 50-50 game,” Behrens said. “They can beat us and we can beat them. It depends on who comes out and plays well. They put up 76 points tonight against Boyertown, so we know we’re going to have our hands full. I think it’s going to be a very tight game.”
