Modie Risher Holiday Tournament
Championship game
CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 56, JAMES F BYRNES (SC) 51
The Bucks played the role of giant killer, capturing the Modie Risher Holiday Tournament title with a win over a Byrnes squad that brought a seven-game winning streak into Saturday’s game and is one of the top-ranked large schools in South Carolina.
Defense was the story of this one.
Numbers don’t lie, and the Rebels’ offensive firepower is underscored in their seven-game winning streak when they averaged 80 points a game. Byrnes won its previous two tournament contests by scores of 77-48 and 84-45. The Bucks held Byrnes to 51 points, which tied their lowest point output of the season.
Not a bad springboard into the rest of the season for a West squad that enters the new year with a 3-3 record in league play.
“We are hoping this will be a catalyst for us,” West coach Adam Sherman said. “The team’s confidence is growing.
“Byrnes is one of the largest high schools in South Carolina, and they have been having a great season this year. We have definitely seen the team grow down here. We are hoping we can keep the confidence going into the new year.”
The Bucks set the tone for the big win in a first quarter that saw them outscore the Tigers 18-7. Matt Engle led a balanced attack with six points on a pair of 3s. Roman Kulesa and Julian Phillips each connected on a 3-pointer and added five points.
“Our huge first quarter was led by Bowen Gugger with several huge assists to get us going,” Sherman said. “Team defense has been our calling card. Byrnes has been scoring in the 70s and 80s all season.”
Byrnes, which trailed by six at halftime, outscored West 27-17 in the middle two quarters but still trailed 35-31 heading into the fourth quarter. The Bucks closed out the game with a 21-17 edge in the fourth quarter, sealing the Tigers’ fate by burying 10 of 12 from the foul line in the quarter. Phillips and Engle both scored six points with Phillips connecting on 4 of 5 from the line and Engle sinking all four of his foul shots.
Phillips led the Bucks with 18 points, Engle – who was 6-for-6 from the foul line - added 16 and Kulesa had 14.
Phillips was named tournament MVP, and Engle earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
