Newtown is Title Town

Council Rock North (18-4, 11-3) captured sole possession of the Suburban One League National Conference championship with a 65-46 victory over rival Council Rock South (7-14, 3-11).

“One of my assistant coaches went into the locker room in the last minute or so in the fourth quarter when we had a comfortable lead and texted someone at the Neshaminy-Pennsbury game,” said Council Rock North head coach Derek Wright. “He found out that Pennsbury (13-9, 10-4) won (45-43 over Neshaminy (16-5, 10-4), and our players found out with about 20 seconds left in the game that we were (outright) champions.

“We were all pretty excited,” added Wright. “It means a lot to us – especially the seniors.”

That group includes Andrew Stress, Ty Bostain, Tim Filer, and Nick Donofry. Stress is a four-year varsity player for the Indians, while Bostain and Filer are three-year varsity players. Donofry was one of the Rock North captains this season.

“One of the goals we had at the beginning of the season was to win our league,” said Wright. “And the other was to play in the state tournament.

“With 18 wins, we should have a good spot in the district playoffs,” added Wright. “Any win at this time of season is a good one. And this win against South was a good one.”

Council Rock North came out of the gate running in the first period as the Indians raced to a 13-5 lead. The lead swelled to 30-12 at the close of the first half.

“We controlled the paint early and set the tone,” said Wright. “And Arron Goodman did a great job on the offensive glass.”

Goodman led all scorers with a super 24-point outing. Charlie Anastasi also scored in double figures for the Indians with 14 points.

CR South rallied and outscored Rock North 17-8 in the third period.

“They made some nice adjustments at halftime,” said Wright. “We had to make some plays in the fourth quarter.”

The Golden Hawks were led in scoring by Justin Thomas with 20 points. Cody Nowlin also scored in twin digits with 10 points.

“I am really happy for the team,” said Wright. “They deserved this championship.”

And they didn’t have to share it with anyone else.

Suburban One League - Continental Conference

Central Bucks East (7-13, 5-9) won the most thrilling game of the night as the Patriots edged Central Bucks South (15-8, 9-5) in overtime – 69-66.

David Kiersnowski won the game for East with an incredible half-court shot at the buzzer in the overtime.

“It looked good right out of his hand,” said Central Bucks East head coach Chris Huber. “It was a shot- not a throw. He took a few dribbles and let it go.”

Kiersnowski – who scored a game-high 25-points for the Pats – also connected on the clutch shot that forced the OT. Kiersnowski hit a fade away 12-foot jumper that knotted the score as the regulation clock expired.

CB South was held to just six points in the third period but exploded for 31 points in the fourth period to send the game into overtime.

“South showed why they are a good basketball team,” said Huber. “Our lead went from 14 to 3 in about a minute and a half in the fourth quarter.”

The Titans made five 3-point field goals in the fourth period. Steve Schneider and Mike Pincus led CBS with 18 points each, while Joe Maher added 12 points.
