Nick Fareno is the very definition of clutch.
With two minutes remaining in the second overtime period, the senior captain scored the game-winner to give the Titans the win in Wednesday’s non-league thriller. For Fareno, this has got to be feeling like old hat. After all, it was his third game-winner in overtime in a season that has included four overtime games.
“Nick is the heartbeat of our offense, and the team feeds off his energy,” South coach Mike Strayline said. “PW is an up and coming team. They are well coached and a very physical team.
“We led most of the game, and they fought hard to tie it up. We were up two goals – 13-11 – with 1:30 left in the game, and they found a way to tie it up. We just came out on the right end of it tonight.”
Fareno had a huge game for the Titans, finishing with four goals, five assists and five ground balls. Keith Conner added two goals and three assists, and Reece Levinson had a hat trick. Alex Fessler and Jon Fitts both had a pair of goals while Brady Hinkle scored one goal, and Ryan Gordon had two assists.

The Colonials defensive unit of Matt LicWinko, Keith Gallagher, Tim Sol, Isaiah Bainbrdge, and Frankie Lynch, along with defensive midfield help from Jared Kolsun and Justin Bainbridge, played exceptionally well to force a second overtime.

UPPER MORELAND 8, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 7 (OT)
With 40 seconds separating the Golden Bears from settling for a tie with the visiting Golden Hawks, Joe Messina scored the game-winner, propelling UM to the thrilling victory.
It was Messina’s second goal of the non-league game that featured more defense than offense, including some stellar play by goalie Matt Ludlow.
“Matt Ludlow had five unreal saves in overtime,” UM coach Corey Kelly said. “He was locked in as goalie.”
Ryan Olexa was the catalyst on offense, scoring four goals.
“Ryan was an offensive threat,” Kelly said.
Alex Emmell added a goal and two assists, and Colin Hogan also had one goal. Messina added a pair of assists while Owen Dunleavy and Anthony Zollo both had one assist.
The Golden Hawks, who trailed 7-1 at halftime, staged a remarkable second half comeback and came close to pulling out a win.
"Captain Sal Mastromarco delivered a passionate halftime (speech) to his teammates," Rock South coach Mike Murray said. "He then led by example as the Golden Hawks stormed back as Sal scored all seven goals to force the game to OT. (We) had several quality chances in OT that were turned away by an outstanding effort from the UM goaltender."
Mastromarco's night included reaching the 100-goal milestone.
"As a freshman, he had 15 goals," Murray said. "There was no sophomore season for the 2022 class, Sal came back strong his junior season netting 55 goals. This season, Sal has distributed 19 assists and is one of the leading ground ball players on the team.
"Going into the UM game, he was at 99 goals for his career. Sal performs his best in big games. Council Rock South will need his presence down the stretch."
