National Conference
Abington 9, Pennsbury 5
The Ghosts celebrated Senior Night by clinching at least a tie for their fifth straight National Conference title with two league games remaining against Neshaminy and Harry S Truman.
Abington bolted to a 4-0 lead after one quarter and a 5-2 margin at the half.
“Our defense shut them out the first quarter,” said Abington coach Randy McNeill. “Every defenseman had seven or eight ground balls.”
Ryan Ambler paced the offense with four goals and an assist. Matt Figeuroa had two goals and two assists. Adding single goals were Matt Lomady, Nick Pisko (assist) and Max Malloy. Senior Dan Lomady returned from an injury to tally two assists.
Senior Anthony Greco led the defense with 10 ground balls, and the team’s fourth senior – Ryan Acuna – was active in the midfield as all four seniors made important contributions. Josh Kluver had seven ground balls.
For the Falcons, Ricky Jutkiewicz had a pair of goals, and Andrew Probst (one assist), Luke Matthew and Colin Sullivan each had one goal. Josh Caven led the Falcons with 10 ground balls.
Travis O’Connor was credited with nine saves in goal for the Ghosts. Drew Sweetland also had nine saves for the Falcons.
Neshaminy 12, Harry S Truman 6
The Redskins’ seniors came through on their night as they sprinted to a 12-1 lead.
The senior class accounted for 10 of the 12 goals. Keenan Skeels scored five; Jimmy Roessener, three; and Shane Quinn, two. Dillion Richards was 5-of-7 facing off and senior Corey Majors had a game-high six ground balls.
“I was very pleased with our effort,” said Neshaminy coach Josh Hanlon. “We came out and were able to finish our opportunities. This was only our fourth home game this year and we play very well at Neshaminy.”
Truman, however, didn’t give up as the Tigers clawed their way back to within six.
“They played with a lot of passion for 48 minutes,” said Hanlon. “They came on strong at the end.”
Council Rock South 10, Council Rock North 9 OT
In the battle of the sister schools on senior night for both teams, the Golden Hawks upset North.
South was down a man in the first overtime when Zach Goodman stole the ball and sprinted out on a fast break. He found attackman Dennis Cichikin, who whipped the ball into the net for the win.
“This was our best win of the season so far,” said Hawk coach John Hiron.
North went up 7-2 after the first quarter and then collapsed.
“Everything went wrong after the first quarter,” lamented North coach Joe Kivlen. “They had 15 seniors and I’m happy for them.”
Hiron also credited Goodman for shutting down the Indians’ Chris Gifford.
“The defense held up well,” said Hiron. “They played as a unit and cleared the ball well.”
Continental Conference
Hatboro-Horsham 10, Pennridge 7
On Breast Cancer Awareness Night, the Hatters treated their home fans to a good team effort.
Within the first five minutes Hatboro lost two first team midfielders to injuries, but still managed to hold off the Rams.
Ryan Higgins led the attack with three goals, Trevor Downing had two goals and an assist, Kevin Sweeney scored twice, and Jimmy Durkin netted one goal and two assists.
Freshman Mark Poust stopped 11 shots in goal.
“It was a great team effort,” said Hatter coach J.P. Banks. “It was a great game and great atmosphere.”
Scott Hunsberger scored a hat trick for Pennridge with Kyle McCabe adding a pair of goals. Goalie Bryan White had 10 saves.
“Pennridge is playing so well right now, we needed a complete team effort,” said Banks.
North Penn 12, Central Bucks South 4
It seems like the future is arriving for the Knights. After a huge win over Central Bucks West, North Penn avenged an earlier 9-8 overtime loss to the Titans.
Chris Young had a breakout game for North Penn racking up seven goals.
“He’s been drawing the best defenders,” said coach Rick Smith. “He’s been a team player.”
Chris Anton chipped in three goals, while Kyle Heinig and Joe Van Galen added single tallies.
Goalie Mike Tappen came up with 16 saves.
“Our defense rides on the shoulders of our goalie,” said Smith. “He does all the right things.”
The Titans went up 3-0, but North Penn came back to lead 6-3 at the half, and then allowed just one third-period goal the rest of the way.
“I’m so happy the boys came through adversity and are now seeing the results,” said Smith. “It was a complete team effort.”
The Knights close out the league with a non-league game against Easton Saturday, a big game against rival Souderton Monday and the league finale next Wednesday against Hatboro-Horsham.
American Conference
Wissahickon 15, Upper Moreland 2
It was a considerably different game than when the two teams met back on April 7 when the Trojans needed double overtime to subdue Upper Moreland 7-6.
“It’s a good sign of us getting better,” said Wissy coach Anthony Gabrielle.
Christian McCaffery and Brooks Melvin led the Trojans with four goals and two assists apiece. A.J. Anderson punched in three goals, and Tyler Caruthers notched two goals and an assist, while Luke Gomez contributed one goal and four assists. Peter Carrozza had a big game in the cage with seven saves.
“At this point, our younger players have almost a year of varsity experience,” said Gabrielle. “We’re settling in as a team and playing a disciplined game.”
Ellis Sattizzi notched both of Upper Moreland’s goals, while Talon Blickley and Brent Casenza were credited with the assists.
Matt McGlinsey made seven saves in goal.
“Right now we’re having a lot of peaks and valleys,” said Upper Moreland coach Mike Liberona.
With all the rainouts, the Bears still have seven games to play.
