Non-league
Pennsbury 4, Northwestern Lehigh 3
Duncan Reed scored off the assist from Levin Cicicco in the 75th minute, as Pennsbury survived a wild season-opener, going on the road to knockoff Northwestern Lehigh on Friday morning.
After falling behind early, the Falcons rallied to take command with three straight goals, only to see Nolehi scored two goals quickly late in the game to tie it up, setting the stage for Reed’s dramatic game-winner.
Scoring Summary:
First half
- NWL, PK, 6th minute
- Liam Bobbing (P), 28th minute
- Ryan Mathis (P), 39th minute
Second half
- Liam Bobbing (P), from Jon Neufville, 55th minute
- NWL, PK, 71st minute
- NWL, 71st minute
- Duncan Reed (P), from Levin Dicicco, 75th minute
Coach Tom Stoddart said: “We would’ve loved to see out a 3-1, victory but very pleased with our character to finish the game. We will address the lapse moving forward.”
– Props: “Ryan Mathis is what makes us go and he was fantastic. Liam Bobbing came off the bench for two big goals. Duncan Reed forced the PK and scored the game winner, both plays were set up by Levin Dicicco.”
Next up: Pennsbury will host Faith Christian Academy in a non-league game Tuesday.
Pennsbury 2 2 - 4
Northwestern Lehigh 1 2 - 3
North Penn 2, Spring-Ford 1 (2 OT)
Trailing by a goal, Fionn Regan tied the game for North Penn with a penalty kick in the last minute of regulation. Then in overtime, Regan picked up the game-winner, lifting the Knights to the come-from-behind, non-league win.
Scoring Summary:
First half
- SF
Second half
- Fionn Regan (NP), PK, 80th minute
- Fionn Regan (NP), 2nd OT
Coach Chris Depeppe:
--On the game: “We had a shaky start. First game jitters maybe, but Spring-Ford is a strong athletic team, and we were scrambling early on. They got behind us on the simplest of runs and took advantage of a bit of confusion by our backs.
“We should have tied it up twice in the first half but squandered a couple great chances in front of goal. Both teams hit the crossbar with headers as well, but in the second half, we had more and more of the play, and I was sure we would tie it up.
“It took a bit longer than I hoped, but credit to the boys for persevering. We had a throw-in deep in their end very late, and Matt Haines got the ball deep into the box to Fionn Regan. Fionn had his back to goal, and he is very good at shielding the ball. The defender was in a tough spot and got caught pulling him down. Fionn buried the PK with about a minute left in regulation.
“And in overtime we were relentless. Going into the second OT, we agreed to go for the win for six minutes and then just secure a road draw, so i was probably a minute away from making defensive substitutions when Fionn found a yard of space on the top corner of the box and curled a perfect shot into the upper 90 to win it.”
– Props: “Our back line of seniors Ryan Smith, Rylan Weed and Cole Taylor were outstanding today. And senior Manuel Torres stepped in and played very well. Senior Carson Schell was tireless up top and created some good scoring chances. It was a good battle for our first match, and a lot of players got their first taste of varsity play, so hopefully we will settle in next week and keep improving.”
Next up: North Penn will host Lansdale Catholic in a non-league game Tuesday (7pm).
North Penn 0 1 0 1 - 2
Spring-Ford 1 0 0 0 - 1
William Tennent 4, Bensalem 2
Tennent trailed 1-0 at halftime but - sparked by a pair of goals from Peter Comans - seized control with four second-half goals and walked away from Bensalem with the 4-2 non-league win.
After the Panthers took a 2-1 lead, a goal by Bensalem’s Frank Bediako knotted the score, but Comans scored a goal that stood as the game-winner and Travis Donovan added an insurance goal.
Scoring Summary:
First half
- Chris Fielding (B) from Danny Kalita
Second half
- Charlie Villarreal (WT) from Carter Jameson
- Peter Comans (WT) from Leon Lemberski
- Frank Bediako (B) from David Romero
- Peter Comans (WT) from Ryder Holt
- Travis Donovan (WT)
Bensalem coach Kevin Bock said: “We actually held the lead at half 1-0, scoring on a set piece which was delivered in by Danny Kalita and finished off by Chris Fielding. We were defending a better part of the first half and Tennent was really putting a lot of pressure on our defense.
“They eventually scored two consecutive goals to go up 2-1 early in the second half. We responded immediately after their second goal as Brian Bock took the tap up the middle, delivered a ball out wide to David Romero, who beat the goalie and slid a ball in that was eventually finished by Frank Bediako. We battled for a bit afterwards, but they eventually put two more in to win it.”
Next up: Bensalem will host Cheltenham in a non-league game Monday, and William Tennent will travel to Wissahickon Monday for a non-league contest
Tennent 0 4 – 4
Bensalem 1 1 - 2
Upper Moreland 11, Interboro 0
The Golden Bears started the season with a dominant win against Interboro in the non-league opener for both teams.
Gabe Hendrickson and Max Hubbard led the way with multiple goals for Upper Moreland, while Daniel Darnesto, Mark Teefy and Satya Gogineni also scored.
“The keeper team of Jakob Snyder and Tyler Feise recorded the shutout with the assistance of all of the backs,” said UM first-year head coach Dave Darnesto.
Next up: Upper Moreland hosts Harry S. Truman in a another nonleague game on Monday.
Pennridge 1, Faith Christian 1 (2 OT)
Opening on the road - at night - against a rival is never an easy thing, and Pennridge led this one early, but in the end walked away with the 1-1 tie against small-school power Faith Christian on Friday.
“Overall, we’re really happy with the performance,” said Rams coach Aaron Rapsinski. “Faith has been a really tough game for us the past few years, with them getting the better of us. Last time we played at Faith, we took a pretty good beating. It was good to travel to them and put in a really good performance.”
Scoring Summary:
First half
- Jace Soto (P)
Second half
- Faith Christian, second half
Two overtimes
-No score
Coach Aaron Rapsinski:
--On the game: “We played really well in the first half. We worked the ball around and were able to break their high line to get in behind them. We had some opportunities, but about halfway into the first half, we were able to go up 1-0. Jace Soto was there to put in the rebound off of Gavin Coyne’s shot.
“Faith rebounded and adjusted in the second half. We knew they’d come out at us, and a bang-bang play that we didn’t do a good enough job of clearing led to a shot around the top of the 18.
“We went to OT and had multiple breakaways turned away. Faith had some good chances on our end too, but I feel like a tie was the right outcome.
--Props: “I had a lot of guys step up when we had a few guys go off injured. Gavin Coyne and Bryan Lopez played a heck of a game keeping (Faith’s top players) at bay for most of the game. Jace Soto and Sam Turco did a great job leading our line. Mike Smith had a great game in net.”
Next up: Pennridge will host Boyertown in a non-league game Tuesday.
Pennridge 1 0 0 0 - 1
Faith Christian 0 1 0 0 – 1
Council Rock South 2, Conwell-Egan 2 (2 OT)
CR South scored two second-half goals and led until late, only to see Conwell-Egan score late to tie it up, and then the two teams settled for a tie after a scoreless overtime period.
Josh Coehlo and Sean Davis scored for the Golden Hawks.
Scoring Summary:
First half
-No score
Second half
- C-E, early second half
- Josh Coehlo (CRS) from Nolan Graham, 60th minute
- Sean Davis (CRS) from Diego Soto-Pinzon, 68th minute
- C-E, 80th minute
Two overtimes
-No score
Coach Alan Nichol:
--Props: “I thought Nolan Graham, Diego Soto, and Stephen Murray showed great energy today, and I’m very happy about recovering from a second-half deficit to retake the lead. Full credit to both strikers for earning their pay today.
“We’re one game in, and we have a lot of positives to take from this moving to league play next week.”
Next up: Council Rock South will host Archbishop Wood in a non-league game Tuesday.
CRS 0 2 0 - 2
C-E 1 1 0 - 2
Archbishop Wood 2, Council Rock North 1
Matt Broznya scored CR North’s goal with 16 minutes left in the first half, which tied the game, but Archbishop Wood ended up getting the game-winner and knocked off the Indians in the non-league opener for both teams on Friday.
CR North – which returned just two starters from last year’s division championship team – played down a man for 70 minutes.
Coach Joe Stackhouse:
--On the game: “We were pleasantly surprised. We went out in the first five minutes and had control of the game. We came out on fire, and they had one counterattack - a bad play by one of our backs, and they scored in the first three minutes.
“As long as we were even up, we were controlling play. Even when we were down a man, we held the ball really well, and we're young.
--A man down: “The long and the short is one of our kids was tossed out in the first 10 minutes, and we played 70 minutes down a man. If you turned on the EPL (English Premiere League) tomorrow, you'd see it occur in every match. The kid wasn't actually the last defender either, because they were in a line straight across. He pulled one of their forwards down by the shoulder. If anything, give him a yellow card and say, ‘Hey, cool down.' or whatever.
“But for the most part, the play, even though we were down a man, was even. I give them credit, being smart enough to find their open man all the time and make our kids chase.
“We're young, but if we play as well as I think we can, we'll be okay. They've got to believe in themselves, and that's the thing. The kids that have been around have been in the shadow of other guys for two years. I'm optimistic about the year.”
Next up: Council Rock North will host Penn Charter in a non-league game Monday.
Archbishop Wood 1 1 – 2
CR North 1 0 - 1
Lansdale Catholic 2, Souderton 1
A second half goal by Fin Williams briefly put Souderton in front, but Lansdale Catholic back back with two goals of its own to grab the lead and hold on for the 2-1 win in the non-league opener for both teams.
“Souderton on the whole played a good game,” said Indians coach Frank Demas. “Possessed well and created some great chances. But we were just in need of someone to step up and put a ball in the back of the net.
“Lots of positives and some good play from a lot of guys who had their first varsity starts and appearances. Hopefully, this loss is a spark, as we start league play next week.”
Next up: Souderton will travel to Pennridge Thursday for its SOL opener.
LC 0 2 – 2
Souderton 0 1 - 1
Unionville 1, Central Bucks South 0
Unionville scored early in the first half and that one goal stood up, as CB South dropped its non-league opener on Friday by a 1-0 final in the opening game of the West Chester Henderson Tournament.
“We are happy with how we played,” said Titans coach Ed Brnardic. “We controlled possession for most of the game, but we gave up an early goal when we lost coverage on a set play that rebounded around our box.
“Unionville has a very good team, and we were able to put pressure on them for a lot of the game but unfortunately couldn’t find the equalizer. Their midfield was very strong with Jax Pinkston, Tony Jiang and Tyler Wilson - three great players who are tough to handle.”
Coach Ed Brnardic:
–Props: “Ryan (Weiner) was excellent for us in goal. He was forced to come off his line on a few occasions, and he made some strong tackles outside of his box. He had a fantastic week making several key stops that helped us start our counterattack.
“AJ (Okoniewski) was the heart and soul of our offensive line. His engine is always going and he’s constantly creating opportunities for his teammates. He kept Unionville on their toes for much of the game.”
“Our captains (Tyler Jaskelewicz/Josh Dozier) were everywhere. They did all the dirty work, and they contributed to the attack. I can’t ask any more of them.”
Next up: CB South travels back to West Chester Henderson to face host Henderson Saturday night at 7:00 pm.
CB South 0 0 – 0
Unionville 1 0 - 1
West Chester Rustin 3, Upper Dublin 2
Upper Dublin battled back from a two-goal deficit to tie the game, but it was West Chester Rustin that emerged with this non-league win, scoring the game winner in the last 10 minutes.
Jackson Bryan and Jacob Pang scored the second-half goals for the Flying Cardinals.
Coach Noah Johnson:
--On the game: “It was the story of two halves. We started off very flat the first half. We started to pick it up through the second half.
“We used a lot of energy forcing that comeback, then started to die off a bit and let up another goal in the last 10 minutes. So, not the result we really wanted, but a lot of good moments came from this, and I think the boys will respond well. Looking forward to our matchup against Springfield on Monday.”
Next up: Upper Dublin will host Springfield Twp in a non-league game Monday.
