National Conference
Pennsbury 4, Neshaminy 3
Pennsbury coach Tom Stoddart called it one of the strangest games he’s ever coached. The Falcons led Neshaminy 3-1 at the half on goals by Jason Hyman, Dylan Smith and Evan Caterson.
Following the intermission, the game was called for a half hour because of lightning. When play resumed, in a matter of a minute and a half, the Redskins tied the score.
The Falcons could have been deflated, but they fought back until Matt Montgomery netted the game winner with about 10 minutes left to play.
“It was bizarre,” said Stoddart.
Pennsbury keeper Pat Lestingi stopped five shots, including a key one with Pennsbury leading 3-1.
The Falcons are now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the National.
Council Rock North 2, Abington 0
By the time Abington got its game going after the bus trip to Newtown and all the hoopla of a football game on an adjacent field, the Indians were up 2-0.
And then eight minutes into the second half, the refs called the game because of lightning.
North Penn 1, Pennridge 0
The Knights are on an early roll in the ever-tough Continental Conference. After a satisfying tie against an always-dangerous C.B. East, North Penn knocked off the conference favorite.
The Rams nearly took the lead 15 minutes into the game, but the shot banged off the post. Five minutes later North Penn’s Michael Robinson tossed in a ball from the touchline, and junior Brian Volot knocked it in from about five yards out.
“He has great anticipation,” said North Penn coach Paul Duddy. “He got to it before the Pennridge defender could react.”
Duddy said it was a very defensive game and the ball was in the air a lot.
“They’re good defensively, and we’re getting better,” he said.
The Knights are now 2-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Continental.
“Today we got the goal and they didn’t,” said Duddy. “The good news is that we have a lot of good young players in the program. We’re deeper than we have been in years.”
Central Bucks East 1, Hatboro-Horsham 0
Does Mike Gorni do it with mirrors or magic tricks?
The venerable C.B. East coach finds ways to win, even when he’s short three starters, two of whom are captains. Shane Donovan (fractured hip), Miguel Diaz (fractured cheek) and Mac Farber (ankle sprain) are all sidelined, but the Patriots still find ways to compete.
Thursday, Ben Marks scored on a set piece throw-in by Chris Kneeshaw to knock off a good Hatboro-Horsham team.
Replacing Donovan in goal, sophomore Jacob Nesteruk notched his first career shutout.
“It was a great result for us,” said Gorni.
The Patriots are 1-0-1 in the Continental.
Souderton 3, Central Bucks South 2
A very young Souderton team extended its unbeaten streak in the Continental to 2-0.
Underscoring the youth theme, sophomore Ryan Molyneaux scored the game winner.
The Indians always have trouble at South, but Thursday they overcame their nemesis.
Also scoring for the Big Red were Luke Hartzell and Christian Benner.
“It was a great game,” said coach Tom Quintois. “It was a typical battle between two good teams. We scored three legitimate goals.”
Overall, Souderton is 2-1-1.
Upper Moreland 3, Plymouth Whitemarsh 1
The Golden Bears are always pleased to knock off a Class AAA team since they are the smallest school in the Suburban One League.
“Anytime you beat a school like that, it’s a good thing,” said Upper Moreland mentor Jack Knauss.
The Bears controlled most of the action and didn’t give PW many quality chances.
Tim Uvegas led the way with his superb goal keeping, and the offense supported him.
For the second straight game, Tommy Hays, Tim DeCarolis and Menvekeh Daramay each tallied a goal. Daramay also added an assist along with Josh McCune.
Carl Wambold solidified the defense and John Baez led the way in the midfield as the Bears improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the American Conference.
Upper Dublin 6, Upper Merion 0
Upper Dublin cruised past the Vikings. Harry Roche led the Cardinals with two goals, while Andrew Yekel, Dante Arnone, Dan Gamboa and Ryan LeFevre chipped in single tallies.
Upper Dublin keeper Parker Schroeder was untested in goal, while Upper Merion’s Tom Schiliro stopped seven shots.
