Pennridge and Pennsbury were both winners in the opening round of the PIAA 3A State Tournament.
PIAA 6A opening round
#1-2 Pennridge 3, #12-1 La Salle (25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 25-19)
The Rams handed the District 12 champion Explorers just their second loss of the season in Wednesday’s state opener.
Senior setter Even Jalosinski was credited with 43 assists with nearly half of those assists going to Bryce Ammon, whose 23 kills led the Rams. He also had four blocks.
“Bryce didn’t have his best game, but he always gets the job done,” Pennridge coach Dave Childs said. “We are still figuring things out now that we are fully healthy.”
Jude Rotondo added 12 kills and five digs, and Logan Jalosinski had seven kills, nine digs, four blocks and three aces. Aaron Ladd finished with five kills and a team-high six blocks, and Chris Cullen added five kills and three blocks. Ethan Vo had eight digs.
Pennridge (18-2, 14-0 SOL) will face Warwick, the third place team from District 3, in Saturday’s quarterfinal match at Governor Mifflin High School at 10 a.m. Warwick defeated North Allegheny, District 7’s second place team, 3-1 in an opening round match.
Tuesday, June 4
#1-1 Pennsbury 3, #12-2 Northeast (25-23, 25-17, 25-18)
The Falcons rolled to a sweep of visiting Northeast in Tuesday’s opening round of the state tournament.
Nathan Knapp’s monster 22-kill effort (.550 hitting percentage) led the Falcons at the net. He also had one ace, three digs and two blocks. Billy Cavanagh had a big night with 11 kills and an impressive .643 hitting percentage. He also had two digs and two blocks.
Also for the Falcons, Lukas Ricciardi had eight kills, two aces and three digs, and Jack Bucksar added four kills (.429) and five digs.
Pennsbury setter Kieran Shaw handed out 40 assists and also had one kill, one ace and four digs. Ben Bedard added three assists and led the defense with 11 digs. He also had one ace. Anthony Klyuchnyk had one kill.
Pennsbury (21-0, 14-0 SOL) will face defending state champion and District 11 champion Parkland in a state quarterfinal match Saturday at Governor Mifflin High School at noon.
