PENNSBURY 3, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-14)
In an early season battle of last year’s SOL National Conference co-champions, it was the Falcons establishing themselves as the conference favorite with a sweep of the visiting Indians.
Sean Sweeney led the way at the net with 12 kills – and a .417 hitting percentage – three aces, five digs and one block. Louie Bavas added five kills with a .444 hitting percentage to go along with three digs and three blocks. Adam Hludzinski had two kills and five blocks while Marshall Nixon had three kills (.600) and two aces. Charlie Bluestein added two assists and seven digs. Setter Andy Delworth had 25 assists, two digs and four blocks. Danny Quay had three blocks, Luke Bucksar added one kill and Dylan Shugar had a pair of kills.
For the Indians, Harry Wyatt led the way with eight kills, three aces and one block. Setter Nick Baniewicz had 17 assists and three kills. Jack Gunshenan contributed five kills, one ace and one dig. Alex Borman led the defense with seven digs. Kevin D’Arcy had three kills and one block. Sean Helmlinger added a pair of kills, and Nick Ripans had one ace.
QUAKERTOWN 3, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 1 (22-25, 25-10, 25-22, 25-21)
The Titans won the first set, but the Panthers rallied to win the next three to earn the win.
“After winning the first set, we lost some energy and made some mistakes in a lopsided second set,” coach Matt Ehlers said. “We got back into the match but were not able to push to the fifth set.”
The Panthers were led by Logan Spieker with 13 kills, two aces and two blocks while Graham Wilson added six kills and three blocks. Justin Flor had three kills, two blocks and three assists. Setter Drew Stout had 17 assists, two kills and two aces. Ben Wackerman led the defense with nine digs. Josh Moyer added five digs, two kills and one block, and Zac Mahler had four digs and two aces.
For the Titans, setter Mark Macios had 29 assists, one ace and five digs. Middle Justin Koren had 13 kills, five blocks, 13 digs and four aces in a solid all-around outing. Outside hitter Tim White added seven kills and three digs, and outside hitter Mason Zeo added six kills, two blocks, three digs and three aces.
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 3, UPPER DUBLIN 1
East was led by setter Mason Miller, who stabilized the Patriot attack and dished out 35 assists to go along with his four kills and a block. Carter Haban had a big night, racking up 14 kills, seven aces and two digs. Dylan Colbert led the attack with 19 kills and also had two blocks and two digs. Adding to East’s balanced attack was Andrew Bennett with 10 kills, Colton Wurz with four kills and Steve Storm with four kills.
For the Cardinals, Abert Sungenis had a big night, finishing with 14 kills, 12 digs and three aces. Setter Brandon Ross had 28 assists, seven digs, four kills, one block and one ace. Jose Palomeque added 11 digs, one ace and one assist. Also contributing were Blake Bayles (three kills, three blocks), Brandon Dolan (three aces, one dig), Liam Nielsenshultz (three kills, three blocks) and Michael Cummins (two kills, one block).
SOUDERTON 3, CHELTENHAM 0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-19)
The Indians earned a sweep in their opening match of the season, winning the first set in convincing fashion and never looking back.
“The first match of the 2017 season came with a good team effort with all-around play,” coach Dave Stastny said. “In the second set, Cheltenham played better, (but) we were able to finish strong at the end of the set to win it.
“The third set we were able to grab an early lead and maintain it to the end of the match.”
Mike Pagan led the Indians with 15 kills to go along with four digs. Ben Campman had 10 kills and led the team with five digs. Luke Pagan had 31 assists. Others contributing were Aaron Moyer (six kills, four digs), Cam Hart (four kills) and Harshil Desi (two aces).
PENNRIDGE 3, NORTH PENN 1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-9, 26-24)
The Rams dropped the first set but won the next three, avoiding a winner-take-all fifth set by eking out a win in the fourth set.
Setter Corey Quaste handed out 34 assists and also had three aces and three blocks. Cross Edwards led the attack with 15 kills and also had seven digs. Josiah Friesen added eight kills and seven digs, and Kevin Jones had six kills and three blocks. Zach Detweiler contributed five kills and five blocks. The Rams received defensive contributions from Harrison Zeitler (five digs, two aces), Danny Rutter (five digs) and Jeremy Pruss (four digs).
For the Knights, Bobby King had a big match at the net, finishing with 16 kills, one ace and three digs. Setter Ryan Ko had 20 assists, five digs, one block and two aces. Manan Patel added 10 digs and two aces.
Pennridge (1-0) will host rival Quakertown on Friday.
