BENSALEM 3, WILLIAM TENNENT 1 (25-20, 24-26, 25-14, 25-19)
The Owls notched their first win over the Panthers in coach Tim Linehan’s five-year tenure at the helm.
“I think it’s just a confidence thing for my guys,” Linehan said. “We’ve gone into this year not intimidated by anybody.
“I have a lot of experienced guys who want to do something different and change their record. It weighs on them. These guys went in, and they weren’t backing down. Tennent is a great program, but we knew they had graduated some really talented guys. We hoped to be competitive and came out on the right side.”
Joey Conley contributed seven kills and five aces and, according to Linehan, equally important is the leadership role he has taken on as senior captain.
“Joey Conley is our all-around leader,” the Owls’ coach said. “He’s our emotional leader, he’s our senior captain, and everyone really rallies around him.”
Also for the Owls Philip Bui added eight kills and three aces. Harish Patel (four kills) and Shekib Ghafary (four kills) made big plays at the net as well. The offense was run effectively by setter Ronak Shah (20 assists, four kills, three aces).
“He played a great overall match,” Linehan said.
The Owls’ coach is hoping Monday’s win is a preview of things to come.
“We’re trying to keep them level-headed,” he said. “We want this to become the norm. We want to be competitive with everybody.
“We’re walking into every gym knowing we have a chance, knowing we’re going to put up a good fight. We’re hoping to use this as a springboard and get some momentum going forward.”
