SOL National Conference
BENSALEM 3, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-18)
The Owls knocked Council Rock North from the ranks of the undefeated, dropping the first set but then winning the next three to notch their biggest win of the young season.
"This is the first time we have beaten North since I have been here," said Bensalem coach Tim Linehan, who is in his ninth season. "Defensively, the guys really stepped up and turned defense into offense. My outside hitters Dylan Young and Tyler Hoang had awesome games and my setter Dhruv Patel had his best game of the year."
The Owls were led by the strong outings of Dylan Young (17 kills, six digs) and Tyler Hoang (13 kills, five digs). Adam Nevrotski (three kills, three blocks), Om Patel (five kills, five digs) and Shane Czop (three kills) all made plays at the net. Also playing well were Dhruv Patel, who handed out 40 assists, and Harsh Shah, who led the defense with 14 digs.
Bensalem and Rock North both have identical 3-1 records in conference play and trail Neshaminy by one game.
The Owls will travel to Lansdale Catholic for a non-league match Friday, and Council Rock North will be on the road at Council Rock South on Tuesday.
NORTH PENN 3, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-21)
The visiting Knights dropped the first set but then reeled off three straight wins to notch their first victory of the young season.
Setter Brian Landes had a big night for North Penn, finishing with 43 assists to go along with five digs and five kills. Billy Dooney (13 kills, seven digs), Jacob An (10 kills, nine digs), Aaron Foulke (eight kills, four blocks) and Aaron Greene (eight kills, three blocks) all made their presence felt at the net. Ryan Heng’s 14 digs led the defense.
For the Titans, setter Eric Reizas had 10 assists, four digs and seven service points. Chris Kline led the Titans with seven blocks, and Vladyslav Bordia led the defense with 12 digs. Freshman Will Tantum, according to coach Matt Ehlers, continued to perform well and had eight kills, two aces, one assist, 10 digs, and also recorded his first varsity block.
North Penn (1-5, 1-4 SOL) will host La Salle in a non-league match Friday, and Central Bucks South (0-6, 0-5) will host Abington in a non-league contest Friday.
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 3, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 1 (25-13, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19)
The Patriots won their battle with neighboring archrival West in four sets.
East’s offense was led by Liam Ostrander with 26 assists, two aces, five blocks, and seven digs. Ostrander, according to coach Rob Minschwaner, distributed the ball evenly all night. CJ Dalby finished with nine kills, eight digs, four blocks and one ace, Trevor Seestedt contributed 12 kills four blocks and one dig, and Matt LaBouliere had 12 kills, four blocks, one ace and 13 digs. Additional defensive standouts for the Patriots included Aiden Leichter with 18 digs, and AJ Helveston, who picked up 12 digs to go along with one block and two kills. Josh Lyzinski, according to Minschwaner, played an outstanding all around game and added three kills and seven blocks.
Central Bucks East (4-2, 3-2 SOL) will host Archbishop Wood in a non-league match Friday, and Central Bucks West (2-3) will travel to Quakertown on Tuesday.
WILLIAM TENNENT 3, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-19)
SOL American Conference
UPPER DUBLIN 3, PENNRIDGE 2 (25-14, 17-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-11)
The Flying Cardinals are alone atop the American Conference standings, thanks to their hard fought win in a five-set marathon in Thursday’s battle of the conference’s lone unbeaten teams.
“It was a great win against a well-coached Pennridge team,” UD coach Paul Choi said.
Trevor Molloy and Sean Seabrook came up huge for the Cardinals at the net. Molloy led UD with 16 kills, two blocks, three aces, one assist and 13 digs while Seabrook had 15 kills, one ace, one block and 13 digs. David Levin also had a big night, finishing with nine kills, four aces, three blocks, one assist and 13 digs. Setter Spencer Beidner had 46 assists to go along with 12 digs, one kill and one block. Also contributing were Colin Dowdell (four kills, three blocks) and Collin Ross (four kills, three blocks, three digs).
For the Rams, Ryan Benscoter was once again a force at the net, finishing with a game high 22 kills. He also had four blocks and four aces. Tyler Johnson and Bryce Muller both had six kills while Thomas McKinney had four. Skyler Ammon had three aces. Setter Rodidek dished out 40 assists. Dan Detweiler’s 16 digs led the defense.
Upper Dublin (5-0 SOL) will travel to Council Rock South for a non-league match Friday, and Pennridge (4-1) will host North Penn on Tuesday.
SOUDERTON 3, QUAKERTOWN 0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-18)
The Indians and Panthers brought identical 2-2 records in conference play into Thursday’s match, but it was the Indians controlling play on their way to a sweep.
For the Panthers, Micah Reinford (10 kills, one ace, 14 digs) and Jared Leatherman (eight kills, 13 digs) led the way. Setter Cody Steiert had 19 assists, two aces and three digs. Also contributing were Zander Marks (two kills, one block, four digs), Jeff Sinsel (one kill, one ace, one block, five digs) and Kurt Glaeser (one ace, five digs).
Souderton (4-2, 3-2 SOL) will travel to Unionville for a non-league match Monday, and Quakertown (2-3) will host Central Bucks West on Tuesday.
