The Flying Cardinals celebrated Senior Night by earning a hard-fought win over the visiting Titans. The night didn't start out on a promising note for the Cardinals when the Titans won game one, but the Cardinals rallied to win the next two.
"We did gain some momentum at the end of the first game and carried that over to game two," coach Matt Ehlers said. "In game three, we played well and maintained the advantage for most of the game.
"In the fourth game, it was back and forth with good serving and passing mistakes by both teams leading to runs in points."
Game five was a thriller, according to Ehlers.
"Dave An started the game with three straight points to give us the early advantage," the first-year coach said. "CB South, to their credit, got the serve back and pressured us by taking the lead back.
"After getting the serve back at 8-12, both of our outside hitters took over the game with their serving and hitting. Dror Bareket went back to serve and served out the game with seven straight points off of serve. Our blockers were getting up big, and we were playing good defense behind them and transitioning those digs into points.
"When it was 14-12, and after another good dig, senior Jordan Walden ended the match with a strong spike that CB South was unable to dig."
Walden led the attack with 23 kills while Bareket had 14 kills. Middle blockers Curtis Carter and Avery Jackson both ended up with 11 kills, and opposite Brian Day had nine kills.
Bareket led the serving with 10 points and three aces (seven points and two aces in the final game). The seniors, according to Ehlers, also stepped up with Walden contributing 10 points, Carter, nine points and one ace, and An, eight points and one ace. An set the entire match and recorded 50 assists while spreading the ball around.
Carter led the team with 11 blocks followed by Avery with 10. Day added seven blocks.
"Dror Bareket really played inspired out of the backcourt and led the team with 26 digs," Ehlers said. "Jordan Walden and libero Jon Lee also helped to solidify the passing and defense with 16 and 12 digs respectively.
"I was really happy for the boys to win this match. It has been a frustrating season, and this was a great morale boost for them to win at home on Senior Night in front of their families and friends."
