Foul shooting, according to coach Robert Mulville, has been a point of emphasis. In Monday’s non-league game, foul shots proved to be the difference.

The two teams entered the fourth quarter deadlocked 28-28. Derrik Cosenza buried 10-of-11 from the charity stripe in the fourth and the Panthers were 16-of-17 overall in the final frame, outscoring their hosts 20-15 in the quarter.

“We grabbed about a four-point lead with three minutes left in the game, and then we were able to control the ball,” Mulville said. “Cosenza has worked hard at improving his foul shooting, and actually, the whole team has.

“We have made it a focus just because it’s hard to put things in, so at least you’re getting some time to practice some shooting so you can shoot a high percentage from the foul line.”

Sparked by nine points from Cosenza, the Panthers took a 19-14 lead into halftime. The Golden Hawks erased that lead with a 14-9 third quarter. Colin Martin led the way with five points.

Cosenza led all scorers with 23 points, which included a 13-for-17 effort at the foul line. Dom Sulpizio added eight points while Matt Miller and Jay Stanfield each had six.

Martin scored 14 points – 11 in the second half - to lead the Golden Hawks. Joey Purcell added seven while Stephen Dosa and Joseph Venuto both had six points.

The win was the fourth without a loss for the Panthers and snapped a three-game winning streak for the Golden Hawks.

“Our defense overall as a team was huge,” Mulville said. “We had Ryan Emmerich take a charge with about 20 seconds left to go when we were up five. We inbounded the ball, got fouled, made two foul shots, and that put us up seven. That was huge.

“The defense from Michael Scheller, Matt Miller and Ryan Emmerich – that was really, really good. Michael Scheller works his butt off all the time. He’s always on what we consider the other team’s best scorer, and Miller’s in that same boat and Emmerich too. Emmerich gives us a spark off the bench.

“Those things don’t show up in the stats. JP McAnulty doesn’t play a lot, but when he gets in there, he’s effective. The bench is really playing well for us overall.”

William Tennent (4-0, 3-0 SOL) will host Lower Moreland on Wednesday, and Council Rock South (3-3, 2-2) will travel to Truman on Tuesday.

Girls

Non-league

COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 47, WILLIAM TENNENT 24

Propelled by their stingy defense, the Golden Hawks raced out of the gate to a double-digit lead after one quarter and took a 37-9 lead into halftime on their way to the non-league win.

“We did some things well tonight,” Rock South coach Blair Klumpp said. “I thought we mixed some things up defensively and got out in transition. We dictated the pace and when we have done that, it has worked out well for us.

“I think the girls did a good job closing the half on a nice run that gave us a nice advantage. We forced over 20 turnovers in the first half, which was good, and we took care of the ball.

“We need to take better advantage of converting in transition and at the rim. That was the one takeaway. The other was we need crisper execution in the half court offense. I thought our team defense was good. We can be a little more physical and control the glass a little better, but overall, the girls were very active and disciplined defensively. We need a similar type effort against Truman tomorrow.”

Senior Nicole Blaustein led the Golden Hawks with 13 points, four assists and three steals. Mia Stock added seven points and four rebounds. Jess Mangoni contributed five points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals. Carley Irvin had four points, two assists and a team high five steals. Karissa Smedley had five points and four steals.

For the Panthers, Kailyn Hansen had seven points, and Emily Thron added six.

Council Rock South (4-2, 2-2 SOL) will travel to Harry S Truman for a 6 p.m. contest Tuesday, and William Tennent (1-3, 1-2) will be on the road at Lower Moreland on Wednesday.

ABINGTON 50, JENKINTOWN 46

The Ghosts found themselves on the short end of a 30-29 score after a high-scoring first half. They allowed just 16 points in the second half, outscoring the visiting Drakes 21-16 to earn the non-league win.

“They were hitting some three’s, and we just didn’t come out with enough energy,” Abington coach Dan Marsh said. “We missed a lot of layups again.

“I know it’s the end of January, but it feels like November and we’re just trying to get our legs under us and play well. It’s our third game, and thank god we had a little competition in this game. With Upper Dublin coming up Friday and Quakertown tomorrow, we really needed to have a test, and we did. We were able to pull it out. It wasn’t pretty, but a win’s a win.”

Junior Khalis Whiting scored nine of her 12 points after the intermission, which included a 7-for-9 effort at the foul line. Jaida Helm also had 12 points – 10 in the first half to keep the Ghosts close. Cire Worley added eight points.

“We struggled, and they hit a bunch of three’s,” Marsh said. “Number 13 (Katie McGrath) was real good for them, 22 (Carly Mulvaney) was good for them, but we persevered.

“We were able to grab the lead and make some free throws down the stretch. Khalis (Whiting) had a solid game.”

McGrath led the Drakes with 25 points, which included five three’s. Carly Mulvaney added 10 and Molly Walsh had six. The Drakes buried eight 3-pointers while the Ghosts had six.

Abington (3-0, 2-0 SOL) will travel to Quakertown Tuesday.
