Check out the recaps for SOL boys/girls basketball teams in action Sunday.
Boys
MaST Holiday Tournament
WILLIAM TENNENT 53, MaST CHARTER 45
The Panthers opened up a 17-5 lead after one quarter, setting the tone for a win over the host team in Sunday’s title game.
Five players finished with eight points or more as the Panthers used a balance attack to earn the decisive win.
Key players: Tony Pople – named tournament MVP – had his second double-double in as many games, finishing with 10 points and 18 rebounds. Ryan Bula also had 10 points while Luke Torok and Scott Scheller both had nine points, and Braden Goldberg had eight points.
William Tennent coach Robert Mulville: “It was a good win. We started out 0-5 and then we won our last four. We knew today was going to be a tough game, playing down there in their tournament, and they’re doing well this year. We’re playing really well as a team. The last two years, we could count on 24 points a game from Kirby Mooney.
“Today our leading scorers – two guys had 10, (two) guys had nine. Yesterday it was kind of the same thing. Two guys had 14, one guy had 13, and it’s been that way these last couple of games. It was a good way to end the year, and hopefully, can keep that momentum going as we get ready to practice on Thursday and get ready for Lower Moreland on Friday.”
Chairman of the boards: “Tony (Pople) is one of our post players – he’s only 6-1, he’s not a guy that jumps out of the building, but he’s just really been active on the boards the last two games – 14 last night and 18 tonight. You know what it is – with Tony, he plays with a lot of enthusiasm, and I think that carries over into him trying to get better. A lot of his rebounds are because he’s positioning himself better on defense, and that’s putting him in a better position to get more rebounds. He really cleaned up the glass today.”
Up next: William Tennent (4-5, 1-2 SOL) will travel to Lower Moreland on Friday.

Girls
Cardinal O’Hara Holiday Tournament
ST. FRANCES (MD) 53, UPPER DUBLIN 45
The Cardinals lost for just the second time this season, and while they came up just short against a powerful St. Frances squad, they certainly proved they could play with an elite team.
“St Frances is a very high level team, and I thought we belonged on the same court as them,” UD coach Morgan Funsten said. “We didn’t shoot the ball as well as we had been. We shot 37 percent for the game. We’ve been shooting around 50 percent so far this year. It’s a little drop off. A lot of it has to do with their physicality, but still, make a couple more shots, grab a couple more rebounds, it’s a winnable game. I’m proud of the girls and excited for the improvements we’re making.”
UD – sparked by a pair of 3-pointers from Emilia Coleman – led 16-14 after one quarter but then managed just four points in the second and found themselves on the short end of a 26-20 halftime score.
Twice the Cardinals knotted the score in the fourth quarter, but St. Frances closed out the game strong to earn the win.
Key players: Tamia Clark led the Cards with 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Megan Ngo added 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists, Emilia Coleman had nine points on three 3s and also had five rebounds. Bridget DiMartile had eight points and five rebounds.
Upper Dublin coach Morgan Funsten: “We had seen St. Frances a few times on film and in person yesterday. They’re physically superior to us. We’re not tiny this year, but compared to them, we were very tiny.
“Bridget DiMartile had to guard the 6-4/6-5 girl, Dahni Suggs, who is the daughter of the Baltimore Ravens Terrell Suggs, who’s probably going to be in the Hall of Fame. Not only does she have size, she has NFL daughter type of athleticism.
“We struggled rebounding the ball in the first quarter – we gave up 10 offensive rebounds in the first quarter, which is definitely not a recipe for success. Fortunately, we only gave up six the rest of the game. We knew we had to be physical with them. We really gave up size in every position. They have four or five Division 1 players as starters, and we were right there.”
--The game: “We were losing the whole game. Megan (Ngo) scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to tie it up. She made a 3 to tie it at 43. Their 6-4 girl - who shoots 35 percent from the foul line – got fouled on back-to-back plays, and she was 4-for-4 from the line. She banked in the first one, then swished the next three. Meg had a nice take to tie it back up at 45, and they scored the next six points.
“I was very proud of how the girls defended. Initial shots – our defense was great. Giving up offensive rebounds sometimes is an unlucky type thing, and it was not for lack of effort today. I was as proud as I could be with the girls today and their effort. I absolutely think we got better as a team today. Although it’s not possible to play this team again, next Sunday we’re playing Rutgers Prep, which is one of the best teams around as well.”
--Props: “Tamia Clark played a great game. She guarded a 6-1 left-handed player who was extremely athletic and could finish, a very powerful girl that Tamia played really well defensively, and also, Tamia gave us a ton offensively. She finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists. She scored 15 points on 10 shots, so she was very efficient.
“Their two leading scorers – one of them has an offer to Georgia and Emilia (Coleman) played the other girl (Mone’t Edwards), who averages about four 3s and 19 points a game, and Emilia held her to seven points, and she didn’t make any 3s, which was great.
“The other girl , who is a much more physical player and likes to get to the basket, is about 5-10, and Megan Ngo covered her. Megan did an incredible job and held her to six. Those two girls combined average 40 a game.”
--Positives in a loss: “There were so many positives to take out of today. The first two games of the year – we were sloppy defensively. We were giving up points to the best players on opposing teams. Our recipe for success is to make secondary players beat us. We did that today. Unfortunately, we came up a little short.”
Up next: Upper Dublin (8-2, 2-0 SOL) will host Hatboro-Horsham on Friday.
