Boys

WISSAHICKON 79, PERKIOMEN VALLEY 77 (OT)
(Submitted article)
In dramatic fashion, the Wissahickon boys’ basketball team finished the season with a 79-77 overtime victory over Perk Valley.
To many, it may have seemed like an ordinary end-of –the-season game, but to both teams, the behind-the-scenes stories gave it some extra bite.
Perk Valley’s leading scorer is point guard Purnell Wilson, who is averaging 17.2 ppg, and is one of the best guards in the PAC-10 conference. He also happens to be the nephew of Wissahickon coach Kyle Wilson and cousin to Wissahickon’s best player, point guard Chase Wilson (16.8 ppg).  With playoff possibilities at stake, the two cousins decided to leave it all on the floor and put on a show in front of the sizable Wissahickon crowd for a 4:30 afternoon game.
Purnell Wilson poured in a hefty 34 points and did all he could to put his team in a position to win. With under 10 seconds left in the game and the Trojans down by four 68-64, Chase Wilson drove the length of the court and got fouled on a three pointer with four seconds left. He made the first two and intentionally missed the third; 6’3” forward Jared Reed pulled down the rebound for Wissahickon and put it back in with two seconds left to send the game into overtime.
In the overtime, 6’1” senior guard Chris Vila scored seven of Wissahickon’s 11 overtime points to give the Trojans the win. Chase Wilson finished with 30, but there was a bigger eruption when he scored his 22nd point, a wing 3-pointer, which gave him his 1000th career point.
Both players, Chase & Purnell, and their respective teams gave performances that fans in attendance will not soon forget.
Also for the Trojans, Vila scored 19 – 14 after halftime – while Chris Carradorini added 14 points. Wissahickon closed out its regular season with a 13-9 record.

Girls

CHELTENHAM 61, NORRISTOWN 54
The Lady Panthers closed out league play by avenging a loss to the Eagles earlier this season and finished their second go-round in conference play with an impressive 6-1 record.
“It’s hard to put into words, but personally, I’m proud, and for the girls, I’m especially proud,” coach Brendan Nolan said. “Norristown beat us by 40 points twice last year, and to almost beat them in their gym and to beat them tonight – Vince (Catanzaro) is a veteran coach with great athletes out there.
“I think there’s a lot of pride we can take in a win like that, and to turn around our season from being close to the doormat of the league to being 6-1 the second time through. We beat everyone but Upper Dublin, and we were pretty close to getting second place. PW pulled out a nice win over Upper Dublin and took away that chance, but we could have tied for second, which would have been nice.”
The Lady Panthers received double-figure scoring efforts from thee players in the win. Ashley Jones and Amarri Trueheart both had 17 points, and Gabrielle Wright added 12.
“Gabby has been more consistent,” Nolan said. “There are nights when she doesn’t get a lot of points, but a lot of those nights are nights when Jones and Trueheart are hitting all the shots.
“I think (Trueheart and Jones) are one of the best backcourts in the area. When they have those nights when they’re on, it’s hard for the bigs to get a lot of points. Nashira Brown had six points, and they both had double-digit rebounds, and Norristown’s bigs are a handful. They’re tough.”
Briana Hedgepath had 19 points to lead the Eagles while Keifonna Ferguson added 13 points. Brianna Schools and Kennedy each added six points.
Cheltenham led 19-14 after one quarter but found themselves deadlocked 28-28 at the intermission.  Trueheart led the Lady Panthers with 12 first-half points.
“When teams are trying to shut Ashley down, Amarri really understands how to attack it and find the gaps in the defense,” Nolan said. “She’s having a great year. Amarri has improved tremendously.
“She’s getting overshadowed a lot. All of her stats are better than last year. Her scoring is up, her assists are up, her turnovers are down, and her defense is tremendously better. Even from the beginning of the season, she’s defending a lot better. She is such a huge part of our success this year.”
The Lady Panthers – winners of six in a row - won it with a 13-10 third quarter and then outscored the Eagles 20-16 in the final frame.
Cheltenham closed out league play with a 10-4 record.
“I’m proud, and the girls are happy,” Nolan said. “They’re seeing results from the work we put in. There’s a good feeling in Lady Pantherland right now.”
The Lady Panthers are 15-6 overall with a game against Methacton on Tuesday at 5:30.  The Eagles closed out league play with an 8-6 record. They are 11-11 overall.
