SOUDERTON 9, NORTH PENN 8 (OT)
The Indians showed a flare for the dramatic in Tuesday’s overtime win, and no one had a bigger hand in the action than Greg Gibbs, who finished the day with four goals. It was Gibbs scoring with just over a minute remaining in regulation to knot the score and send the game into overtime.
“Hunter McGowan made a great play on a loose ball after Sean Readinger took it away with a great takeaway check,” Souderton coach Mark Princehorn said of the sequence that led to the tying goal. “Hunter hit Greg Gibbs, who had a really amazing one-handed catch and ran down and scored to tie it.”
Less than a minute into OT, Gibbs connected for the game winner, propelling the Indians to the dramatic win.
“We had a defensive stand in overtime and were able to clear it, and Greg put it away for us,” Princehorn said. “Greg definitely had the big game on offense.
“He actually scored one that should have tied it up earlier (in regulation). He had a real athletic play and dove over the crease to score a goal, but the refs called him in the crease, and the goal was taken away.
“It was a great game. It was well played and well fought by both sides.”
The Knights actually struck first, but the Indians knotted the score and came back to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.
“We actually got up three goals, and it was almost like, ‘Okay, here we go,’” Princehorn said. “We just felt all the momentum, but they came right back. They threw a punch, we threw a punch.”
The Knights took a late lead (8-7), setting the stage for Gibbs to deliver his late-game heroics.
“When they went ahead, we felt the roof caving,” Princehorn said. “The theme of our team all year has been overcoming adversity, and the guys found a way to do it tonight.
“When they started to come back and scored to tie it, you could just feel the air being taken out of our emotions. Luckily, we had some leaders step up and kind of came together as a team and got the job done. It was a great team win.”
In addition to Gibbs, the Indians also received a pair of goals from Cameron Trick. Drew Nice, Cory Anlauf, and Trent Breneman each added single goals for the Indians.
“Our offense is really offensive by committee,” Princehorn said. “We have a lot of guys who can score, a lot of guys who can do really nice things.
“Hunter McGowan, Chris Malanga, Vinny Stranges, Kyle Curran and Sean Readinger all had outstanding games, and Remi Reeves continues to be excellent in goal. Our defense and our goalie have really been the foundation of our team all year. They played phenomenal.”
Matt Brady connected for the hat trick to lead the Knights. Zack McKelvie added two goals and two assists, and Harrison Barclay added a pair of goals. Scott Keffer had a goal and an assist to close out the scoring for the Knights.
North Penn goalie Chris Barr was credited with 14 saves.
While the Knights fall to 1-1 overall (0-1 SOL), the Indians improved to 2-1 (1-0 SOL).
“This was a great win,” Princehorn said. “As a coach, you like to see your team hang onto a lead and build a lead, and it would have been nice to see us control the game a little better, but it’s just as nice to see us overcome adversity and find a way to win.
“North Penn maybe hasn’t had the best record in years past, but North Penn is a very good team. If anybody thinks they’re going to roll over, they’re mistaken because North Penn is good, they’re well coached, and they have some very good athletes. They’re going to surprise some people this year.”
