COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 10, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 9 (OT)
It’s always a war when the neighboring rivals do battle.
Need proof?
Consider only the fact that Monday’s win was the third straight matchup between the two schools that was decided in overtime. The Indians won it in dramatic fashion when Brian Fitzpatrick scored with a minute remaining in OT.
“It was an unbelievable shot,” said coach Jon Levine, whose team trailed by as many three in the second half. “We just keep playing our game. If it works, it works, and it did. I don’t think anything really changed. We just tried to play our game.”
Fitzpatrick and teammate Connor D’Amelia both contributed three goals and two assists to lead the Indians.
The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie at the end of one quarter with Ryan Briggs (Shane Lawler) scoring the Indians’ only goal. Zack Zell scored an unassisted goal in the second quarter, but the Indians found themselves staring at a 3-2 halftime deficit.
The Indians knotted the score on a goal from Fitzpatrick (D’Amelia assist), but the Golden Hawks went back on top 7-4 before the Indians scored a pair of late goals to make it a 7-6 game heading into the final quarter. D’Amelia (Ken Crew assist), Crew (D’Amelia assist) and Matt Moller accounted for Rock North’s goals.
An unassisted goal by Fitzpatrick knotted the score 7-7 with four minutes to play, and the Indians regrouped to take an 8-7 lead at the 3:38 mark when D’Amelia scored (Fitzpatrick assist). That lead was anything but secure as the Golden Hawks scored back-to-back goals to go on top 9-8 at the 2:41 mark.
The Indians, showing a flare for the dramatic, used a goal by D’Amelia (Fitzpatrick assist) to knot the score 9-9 with 1:36 remaining in regulation, setting the stage for overtime.
“This was extremely important,” Levine said of Monday’s win. “This is the game we want to win every year. It’s the North-South rivalry. You can’t get any bigger than that.
“This also helps us stay in competition in the league. We got off to a poor start in the year, but we’ve been able to put things together and string together a couple of wins.”
Alex Kovelsky was credited with 12 saves in goal for the Indians. Levine also credited the solid defensive effort of Sam Horbal.
“Joe Earley is always all over the field,” Levine said. “Zack Fell looked good, and Ryan Briggs did well with face offs as he’s done all year.
“I truthfully thought we didn’t play anywhere near our best game. The game was a little bit sloppy.”
