Upper Dublin 8, Wissahickon 4
A strong start by Wissahickon made Upper Dublin work for every goal, but the Flying Cardinals used a 4-2 scoring edge in the third quarter to pull away with an 8-4 victory over the Trojans in Monday’s American Conference matchup between the neighborhood rivals.
“Wissahickon came out and controlled the ball well and played really strong,” said Upper Dublin coach J.P. Banks. “They were actually up 3-2 early in the third quarter. I have to give credit to them for coming out and playing well.
“We settled ourselves down in the third quarter and started doing the things we do well. But this was a good, hard-fought lacrosse game. They’re an up-and-coming team. They’re a team we’re going to have to be looking out for.”
Michael Rama led the Cardinals with five goals and two assists. Drew Potts had three goals and two assists and Ben Winebrake recorded one assist.
Luke Gomez and Matt Blank led Wissahickon with a goal and an assist each. Peter Carrozza and Tyler Crothers each scored one and Brooks Melvin recorded an assist.
Both goalkeepers were busy on this day. Upper Dublin’s Jack Deragon made 13 saves, while Wissahickon keeper Jack Myers turned aside 14 Cardinal shots.
With the victory, Upper Dublin remains atop the American Conference at 6-1 (8-2 overall). Wissahickon falls to 2-4, 3-7.
Hatboro-Horsham 11, Central Bucks South 4
Steady scoring and a spread-out offense led Hatboro-Horsham to its fourth straight victory, an 11-4 win over Continental Conference opponent Central Bucks South, on Monday.
Trevor Downing led the nine-player Hatter scoring effort with two goals and three assists. Jimmy Murphy scored twice; Pat Downing, Jimmy Durkin, Ryan Higgins, Ben Cellini, Kyle Mullen, Jake Cresta and Brian Beck each added one. Connor Kreston had two assists and Jack Lavery added one helper. Steve Palo won 10 of 17 face-offs, and the Hatter defense was anchored by the strong play of Dom Defazio, Tyler Gehlhaus, Cresta and Ryan Higgins.
Mark Poust made six saves to record the victory in goal for the Hatters, who improve to 5-2 overall, 4-1 in league play. South falls to 4-5, 3-2.
Plymouth Whitemarsh 16, Upper Merion 3
Plymouth Whitemarsh used an eight-goal second quarter to jump out to a 9-2 halftime lead en route to a 16-3 victory over Upper Merion in Monday’s American Conference matchup.
Dylan Wixted led a spread-out Colonial attack with four goals; Jake Brown had two goals and two assists; Nick Swift, Kevin Hennessy and Core Kelly each had two goals and an assist; Brandon White, Kevin Brown, Dean Linn and Niko Kolkka each scored once; and John Walker, Mike Borkowski and Mike Martina each had an assist.
Trevor Kupecky and Jake Keszczyk each had a goal and an assist for the Vikings. Mikey Zadroga added one goal.
Andrew Sabia made 13 saves for the Colonials, who improve to 5-0 in the American Conference, 7-2 overall. Troy Minnich made four saves for Upper Merion (2-4, 3-5).
Souderton 14, North Penn 10
Souderton started quickly and led 8-3 at halftime in Tuesday’s Continental Conference matchup against North Penn. An eight-point game from Tyler MacDougall (four goals, four assists) sparked the Big Red to a 14-10 victory.
Cameron Trick added a hat trick for Souderton and Trevor Zwaan and Ridge Schultz each had two goals and one assist. Cordell Armstrong scored twice and Corey Anlouf added a goal. Drew Nice was credited with five ground balls and Remi Reeves made 10 saves in goal for Souderton, which improves to 2-3 in league play, 4-5 overall.
Kyle Heinig led North Penn with three goals and two assists. Chris Young had a hat trick; Alex Kopcho scored twice and added an assist; Matt Brady had one goal; Kenny Miller registered two assists and Dan Gross had one assist, Mike Tappen made 14 saves for the Knights, who fall to 1-4, 2-4.
Central Bucks East 13, St. Joseph’s Metuchen 11
In a back-and-forth contest that saw Central Bucks East outscore St. Joseph’s, 4-0, in the first quarter, and get outscored, 3-0, in the third, the Patriots pulled out a 13-11 victory in Monday’s non-league matchup.
Parker Self led the Patriots with four goals and two assists. Chris Vetter had a hat trick and an assist, Ethan Debuque and Anthony Caselli each had two goals and an assist, and Eric Riva and Cole Rushworth each added one goal. Jackson Burns chipped in with one assist.
East goalkeeper Harrison Holak made 16 saves in the victory, and Chris Schneekloth scooped up 13 ground balls as the Patriots held a 41-7 advantage in ground balls.
The Patriots remain undefeated at 8-0 overall (5-0 in the Continental Conference).
Springfield 9, Norristown 7
Norristown dropped a narrow, 9-7, decision to Springfield (Montco) in Monday’s non-league contest. Sean Cahloun led Norristown with four goals and one assist.
Jesse Prante had a hat trick and one assist. Marcus Severns was credited with two assists and Cardon Lucard and Mike Smith each registered one assist.
The loss drops the Eagles to 2-7 overall.
Upper Moreland 11, Father Judge 5
Upper Moreland improved to 6-3 overall with its 11-5 victory over non-league opponent Father Judge on Monday.
The Golden Bears remain at 1-3 in American Conference play.
Council Rock South 10, Council Rock North 9 (2nd OT)
The Golden Hawks won a thriller on Monday night when - as time expired in the second overtime - junior midfielder Alex Hardy caught a rebound and scored the game winning goal, allowing Rock South to defeat its crosstown rival. With 1:28 left in the 4th quarter, Rock South found the inner strength and scored three goals to tie the game. South received goals from junior attack Corey Giampietro, sophomore midfielder Justin Kole and sophomore defenseman Dylan Moyer in the final 1:28 to tie the game. Both teams battled for two overtimes before Hardy ended the game as time expired in the second overtime.
South was led by Corey Giampietro with three goals and two assists. Kyle Walter had three goals and one assist, and freshman Tommy Vanderslice, Kole, Moyer and Hardy each added one goal. The win raises Council Rock South to 4-3 while Rock North falls to 1-7.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Norristown 12, Nazareth 10
Norristown picked up its first victory of the season, defeating non-league opponent Nazareth Academy by a 12-10 count on Monday.
Precious Evans led the Eagles with four goals. Beverly Pate recorded a hat trick; Taisay Gorden scored two and Rachel Hagel, Jen Menninger and Morgan Heist each added one.
Nicole Dinich provided a solid defensive effort for the Eagles (1-6 overall, 0-5 in American Conference play).
Upper Merion 12, Plymouth Whitemarsh 6
Upper Merion scored four goals in a four-and-a-half-minute span to break open a 2-2 tie and grab a 12-6 halftime lead on the way to a 12-6 victory over American Conference rival Plymouth Whitemarsh in Monday’s game.
“PW is always one of our biggest rivalries,” said Upper Merion coach Angie Yanocha. “The girls came out ready to go.”
Mel Ryan and Julia Reinert each scored three goals. Dominique Gambone had two goals and an assist, and Liz Botto and Amanda McAteer each added two goals. Goalie Ally Frymoyer made nine saves in recording the victory in goal.
Yanocha praised the efforts of the entire defensive unit in the victory.
“The defense sometimes gets overlooked, but the girls were forcing turnovers and creating the plays in the defensive end,” Yanocha said. “Our transition was just beautiful today. They were getting the ball on defense, getting it up to the attack and finishing. Ally made some good saves, the defense had some good clears.
“Everyone contributed today. We had a lot of people scoring, our goalie and defense played well. That’s the best thing a coach can ask for.”
Upper Merion improves to 2-3 in the American Conference, 4-4 overall. PW falls to 1-3, 1-8.
Hatboro-Horsham 22, Souderton 11
The Hatters can burn teams in a lot of ways.
Stop one player and another one will step to the fore, and making the Hatters even more dangerous is their willingness to share the ball.
“They’re not worried about stats,” coach Duncan Swezey said. “Last year, honestly, there was some pressure about who gets what.
“This year it’s a transition where any one of those girls can be on that day.”
Cortnee Daley certainly was on in Monday’s win, turning in a glittering seven-goal effort, but she was hardly a one-woman show. Teammates Nicole Beck and Lizzy Carr both added four goals with Carr contributing four assists and Beck, three assists. Julie McKay added the hat trick and one assist while Rachel Rausa had two goals, Caroline Hagan added one goal, and Katie McKay, one assist.
“There were plenty of opportunities where Cortnee could have taken another shot or someone else could have taken a shot, but they didn’t – they gave the ball up,” Swezey said. “Actually, that was one of our main goals at the beginning of the year. These girls have to learn to play as a team.”
The Indians were led by the four-goal, one assist performance of senior Liz Mower. Alyssa Ziegler and Tori Bulgier each scored two goals while Amber Lambeth, Michelle Goodwin and Natalie Bulgier all added one goal.
“I was a little disappointed that they scored as easily as they did,” Swezey said. “They did a nice job in transition. They can throw and catch. Those girls can play.”
“We realized that we were able to go at them on offense,” Souderton coach Nicole Bauer said. “It was pretty comparable to the draw controls that every draw control we got, we could get a goal. That was a big thing. That’s been killing us recently – the draw control.”
Daley and Hagan led the Hatters with four draw controls each while Rausa and McKay both had three draw controls. Carr and Julie McKay had one each for the Hatters, who led by just a 5-4 score 10 minutes into the contest but extended that to 15-8 by the intermission. The Indians would get no closer than six the rest of the way.
Souderton goalie Kaitlin Crouthamel was credited with 10 saves while her counterpart, Jackie Giovinazzo had eight saves.
The Hatters, who improved to 5-0 in league play (8-0 overall), are playing with tons of confidence since Thursday’s 10-9 win over North Penn, and they own sole possession of the top spot in the Continental Conference.
“It think it was a big momentum push for us,” Beck said. “North Penn has always been a mental block. We never play our best against them, but being able to beat them gave us a lot of momentum going forward into the rest of the season.”
“I feel like we got a lot more confident after we beat them,” Carr said.
The Indians fell to 3-2 in league play (4-2 overall).
Cheltenham 16, Upper Moreland 5
Allison Hawkins poured in five goals and added an assist as Cheltenham downed Upper Moreland, 16-5, in Monday’s American Conference game. The Panthers led, 11-1, at halftime.
Skye Wallace scored three goals for the Panthers. Sammie McManus and Gabby Szczepanek scored two and added an assist. Alix Macklin, Sloane Macklin, Brittany Hazard and Allie Liss each chipped in with one goal.
Maddie Mauro led the Golden Bears with two goals. Kathryn Brunner, Sarah Reice, Sami Wojciechowski and Veronica Baez each added one goal. Samara Santry recorded an assist.
Jack Dudo made four saves in recording the win for Cheltenham (4-1 in league play, 6-2 overall). Kaitlin Taylor and Emma Joyce shared time in goal for Upper Moreland (1-4 3-5)
North Penn 17, Central Bucks West 11
Rachel Shaw exploded for seven goals and Kaitlin Suzuki netted five as North Penn topped Central Bucks West, 17-11, in Monday’s Continental Conference game.
Tara Rogers and Aubrie Stouffer each scored two for the Maidens, and Hannah Young added one goal.
North Penn improves to 5-1 in league play, 7-3 overall. The Bucks drop to 2-4, 6-4.
Upper Dublin 17, Wissahickon 0
Led by the strong defense of Steph Speese, Danielle Ferguson, Anna Petrucci and Sam Boyd, and a five-save effort from freshman goalkeeper Sarah Gallagher, Upper Dublin blanked American Conference and neighborhood rival Wissahickon, 17-0, in Monday’s matchup.
Brooke Callahan and Kelly Cross each posted four-goal, four-assist efforts for the Flying Cardinals. Julie Cross had a hat trick and one assist; Taylor D’Ginto had two goals and an assist; Emily Hitchings scored twice; and Rachel DiFrangia and Anna Trentini each scored one goal.
Julie Silverman made six saves in goal for the Trojans, who fall to 4-2 in league play, 4-4 overall. The Cardinals remain undefeated in league play at 6-0, 8-1 overall.
Methacton 16, Abington 15
Despite five-point efforts from Jeannie Van Buren (four goals, one assist) and Allison Rooney (three goals, two assists), Abington was edged, 16-15, by Methacton in Monday’s non-league contest.
Meredith Cox and Hanna Sjoholm each added a hat trick for the Ghosts. Kelsey Fitzgerald had a goal and an assist; Emma Gross scored once and had six draw controls; and Katarina Thallner recorded one assist.
Abington drops to 2-6 overall and remains 2-0 in National Conference play.
Central Bucks East 12, Jenkintown 12
Mary Kate Schwartz scored six goals and added three assists for Central Bucks East, which played opponent Jenkintown to a 12-12 stalemate in Monday’s non-league game.
Sam Axenroth scored three and had two assists; Marissa Glatt , Kelly Lapp and Lauren Wick each had a goal and an assist; and Maggie Stella, Kelsey Washburn, Julia Norek and Katt Miller each registered an assist. Madeline Steuber made 10 saves in goal for the Patriots, who move to 3-6-1 overall, 0-5 in the Continental Conference.
