Girls Lacrosse

Central Bucks South 13, Central Bucks East 12 (OT)The Titans appeared to be on their way to an easy win after a goal by senior Brynn Dietzel (Maddie DiBrino assist) gave South a 9-3 lead with 35 seconds remaining in the opening half. They still led 11-5 after Megan Hamilton connected on her third goal of the night at the 20:15 mark of the second half.
The tide began to turn in the Patriots’ favor after Mary Kate Schwartz, who led East with four goals, connected on a free position goal seven minutes later.
Encouraged by coach Megan Macauley - who read William Ernest Henley’s Invictus in her team’s pregame huddle - to be the ‘master of (their) fate,’ the Patriots staged a comeback that was nothing short of remarkable.
It was a 12-11 game after Kelly Lapp scored at the 3:03 mark, and although the Titans won the ensuing draw, the Patriots regained possession after drawing a charging call on South’s attacking end.
Titan goalie Leslie Searles, who delivered a glittering 19-save effort, turned away back-to-back shots, but Schwartz would not be denied, connecting for the equalizer with 40 seconds remaining and setting the stage for OT.
“It was a little nerveracking for the girls at the end of the game,” South coach Janique Craig said. “I just told them to be smart, get the draw and take their time.”
The Titans heeded all of Craig’s advice except for the little matter of taking their time. It took just 11 seconds for Megan Hamilton, who came up with the ball in a scramble off the draw, to find DiBrino on a breakaway. The Titans’ senior captain did the rest, connecting on a rocket across goal for the game winner.
It was the fifth goal of a brilliant five-goal, four-assist effort by DiBrino, who acknowledged that the win couldn’t have come at a better time for a Titan squad that had dropped five straight.
“This was extremely important,” the Titans’ senior captain said. “I know a lot of the girls and even myself were at that point like, ‘Oh my god, we’re losing 17 to whatever every game,’ so everyone was kind of down.
“To win this is a great jumpstart. We only have a few games left, and it will give us momentum for the rest of the season.”
In addition to DiBrino, the Titans received the hat trick from Hamilton and one goal each from Anne Danayluk, Mackenzie Harding (one assist), Emily Cliggett, Devon Dietzel and Brynn Dietzel (one assist).
“I’m really proud of these girls because they are young and they are inexperienced in these types of situations,” Craig said.
The Patriots, who were led by the four-goal effort of Schwartz, received the hat trick from Lapp as well as two goals from both Sam Axenroth and Marissa Glatt. Lauren Wick added a goal and an assist.
“I’m very happy with them, and I’m very proud of them that they did not let up and played consistently for the entire game,” Macauley said.
While the Patriots fell to 0-9 in league play (3-10 overall), the Titans improved to 4-6 in the league (6-8 overall).

Senior midfielder Allison Hawkins scored the 100th goal of her career among her three tallies in Monday’s 16-6 victory over American Conference opponent Plymouth Whitemarsh.
“Allison has become a much more well-rounded and diverse player this year,” Cheltenham coach Dave Burton said. “She plays better defense, takes draws, she’s a pretty decent passer, she sees the field well.
“She made the effort to develop her game. This is a nice reward for her efforts. Allison will tell you her teammates are a part of this as well. The work they put in and the support on and off the field have allowed her to get those opportunities she’s had.”
