GIRLS LACROSSE
Hatboro-Horsham 22, Central Bucks West 8
Hatboro-Horsham began the evening honoring its senior class. It ended the night celebrating a Continental Conference title.
With their 22-8 victory over Central Bucks West during Tuesday’s Senior Night, the Hatters earned themselves at least a share of the Continental League crown. The Hatters, who sit atop the division at 10-0 (14-2 overall), need just one win in their remaining two games (Wednesday at Central Bucks East and Thursday at Pennridge) to clinch sole possession of the title.
“It’s awesome for the girls,” said coach Duncan Swezey. “Our girls are very happy. We have a heavily senior-led team, so it’s great for them.”
The Hatters didn’t get off to the quickest of starts, falling behind 2-0 less than 10 minutes in.
“West came out playing hard,” Swezey said. “We called timeout about 10 minutes in, we scored the next three or four goals and controlled the ball well from then on.”Lizzy Carr led the Hatters with a whopping 10-point game. The senior netted seven goals and assisted on three others.
“Lizzy was spectacular,” Swezey said. “She did a great job tonight.”
Cortnee Daley had an eight-point night with five goals and three assists; Julie McKay had four goals and two assists; Nicole Beck had a hat trick and two assists and Caroline Hagan had one helper to go along with three goals for the Hatters. Beck connected on the 200th goal of a stellar career.
Pennsbury 9, Abington 7
Pennsbury made a little bit of history with Tuesday’s 9-7 victory over National Conference foe Abington.
“This was the first time our program not only beat Abington, but swept them both times,” said Pennsbury coach Kelly White.
Kelsy Gumbert led the Falcons with three goals and two assists; Jackie Sweeney scored three; Alyssa Matthews had a goal and one assist; and Carson Smith and Joy Hopkins each added one.
“Joy Hopkins has been scoring four, five goals per game for us,” White said. “She had one tonight, but Kelsy stepped up as usual, and Carson Smith and Alyssa Matthews scored. You can’t rely on one person, so it’s good to see girls stepping up and scoring for us.”
Jeannie Van Buren led Abington with three goals. Hanna Sjoholm and Meredith Cox each scored twice.Abington goalkeeper Kate Margolis made 19 saves for the Galloping Ghosts (4-4 in league play, 5-12 overall). Liana Eyre made 11 stops for the Falcons (6-2, 12-5).
“Ali Hickman on low defense was great tonight and Liana in goal came up with some really big saves for us,” White said.Pennsbury closes out the season against Central Bucks South on Wednesday, then looks ahead to the playoffs.
“We’re trying to take it one game at a time, working on the things we need to work on, like possession and shooting,” White said. “Last year was our first time in the playoffs, and we finished in third place in the conference. We’re taking the next step this year.
“The girls are doing all the hard work in the offseason, and now they’re seeing all that work and time paying off, and seeing our confidence growing as well and taking on the winning mentality.”
Wissahickon 12, Cheltenham 7
Freshman goalkeeper Julie Silverman made 14 saves as Wissahickon held American Conference opponent Cheltenham to just one goal in the second half in Tuesday’s 12-7 victory. Wissahickon led 7-6 at halftime.
“We fortified ourselves on defense after halftime,” said Wissahickon coach Chelsea Rosiek. “And our goalie was really aggressive tonight.”
Rosiek, who coached Silverman in the local youth lacrosse leagues, knew she’d have the ability to step in as a freshman and take over for the graduated Jess Scannapieco.
“I had my eye on her,” Rosiek said. “When Jess left, that left big shoes to fill, but Julie’s stepped in and is doing a great job.
“She trusts her defense, she knows the defense is solid. That lets the goalkeeper be more comfortable. It’s a symbiotic relationship, they play well for her, help her out, and it makes her want to play well for them.”
Senior captain Ali Hunter played a strong defensive game for the Trojans, who received six goals and two assists from Laura Frankenfield; two goals each from Zoe Kale and Bailey Weber; and one goal each from Zoe Gomez and Lauren Irvine.
“I thought this was the first time they played to their ability for the entire 50 minutes,” Rosiek said. “We’re young, so inconsistency is going to happen.“But we’re happy with where we’re at. We clinched second, we were undefeated in the league except for Upper Dublin.”The Trojans finish the league slate at 10-2 (10-6 overall). The Trojans will end the season with a non-league game on Thursday against Gwynedd-Mercy Academy. In addition to the team looking for its first non-league victory of the season, Frankenfield is just five goals shy of reaching the 200-goal mark for her Wissahickon career.
