Rock Solid
The only two teams from the Suburban One League that survived to the quarterfinal round of the PIAA District One Quad-A playoffs were Council Rock South and Council Rock North. CR South rallied for an exhilarating 6-5 win over Downingtown East, while CR North looked ready for prime time with a 3-0 victory over visiting West Chester Rustin.
The District One Quad-A format has five teams that will advance from the district to the states – therefore, the seasons were concluded Wednesday by the losing teams – Pennridge, North Penn, Truman, and Plymouth Whitemarsh.
Council Rock South will travel to Marple Newtown to meet the Tigers. Marple Newtown defeated North Penn – 9-6 – in its second round game.
Council Rock North will host Owen J Roberts. OJR won a first round game against Penncrest, and bested West Chester Henderson in the second round.

The game and the season came down to an 0-1 pitch to Council Rock South’s Kane Price. The Hawks were down on the scoreboard 5-4, and the bases were loaded with two outs.
The Price Was Right for Rock South as Price singled home a pair of runs on that 0-1 pitch to present the Golden Hawks with that huge walk-off playoff victory.
“This was an intense high school baseball game,” said Council Rock South head coach Greg Young. “Downingtown East is a team that is much better than a No. 5 seed. They went to the final eight in states last year, and they had a lot of players back.
“But we followed the game plan and did what we had to do to win the game,” added Young. “Kane came up huge for us.”
Price – in addition to his game winning single – blasted a homerun earlier in the game. He finished the game with three hits – two runs scored – and three RBI.
Brian Donnelly – who had an apparent three-run homer caught over the center field fence by the East outfielder – earned the win in relief. Bret DeStefano threw the first six innings for the Hawks and kept them in the game.
“I really don’t know anything about Marple Newtown – other than they just beat North Penn 9-6,” said Young. “I guess I will have to get on the phone and send a few emails. It’s great to still be playing.”

Council Rock North Indians 3 – West Chester Rustin Knights 0
Council Rock North had a magnificent pitching performance from Darren Lauer as the Indians advanced to the district quarterfinal round with a 3-0 victory.
“Darren did a great job of painting the plate,” said Council Rock North head coach Matt Schram. “He had a lot of first-pitch strikes, and he threw a complete game by throwing just 81 pitches.”
Lauer threw the shutout with seven strikeouts and was in total command the entire ballgame.
The Indians scored a pair of runs in the first inning – one on an RBI single by Ryan Hartley – and one on an error. Rock North added its third run in the third inning on an RBI single by Benn Parker.
Rock North will advance to its quarterfinal game as the Indians will host Owen J Roberts. OJR bested West Chester Henderson 8-2 in its second round victory.
“Owen J Roberts in traditionally a very well coached team,” said Schram. “They do all the little things well, and they won’t beat themselves.”

Methacton Warriors 7 – Pennridge Rams 5
There is never a done deal in baseball as evidenced by Methacton’s stunning win over host Pennridge in a second round PIAA Quad-A District One game.
“We have won a lot of close games this year, we just didn’t figure out a way to win this one,” said Pennridge head coach Tom Nuneviller. “For whatever reason, the game just seemed out of sync. Jared (Schaffer) was 5-0 going into the game and is a big game pitcher, but he just didn’t have his best day – baseball is like that – you don’t always have your best day.
“Give Methacton credit, they were very aggressive at the plate,” added Nuneviller. “We got up on them early, but they came right back. We have had a mentally tough group of kids all year, and I knew we would come back and make a game of it.”
Pennridge – which won the SOL Continental Conference title for the last three seasons – must say goodbye to a talented senior class.
“It’s hard to see them walk off the field for the last time,” said Nuneviller. “But they can leave Pennridge with three straight league titles.”

Marple Newtown Tigers 9 – North Penn Knights 6
North Penn only has to look in the mirror to see who knocked them out of the PIAA Quad-A District One playoffs.
The Knights – who took a four-run first inning lead on the strength of a Craig Lepre homerun – committed five errors against the Central League champion Tigers. The game turned around when Marple Newtown – trailing the Knights 6-3 - scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning – an inning where NP made three errors.
