SOL District One Boys' Swimming Wrap (3-2-17)

The North Penn boys’ team is first in team scoring after day one of the District One AAA Championships at La Salle.

The North Penn boys had their collective eyes on the District One Class AAA team swimming title.

That quest got off to a great start on Thursday at LaSalle University’s Kirk Pool as the Knights ended the first day of competition leading the team race with 199.5 points.

North Penn won the 200 medley relay. Ryan Hartmann, SeanFaikish, Noah Jamieson and Ryley Fein touched in 1:34.19.

Aidan Daly was second in the 200 freestyle (1:41.56) and Jamieson took second in the 100 butterfly (50.33).

Fein tied for third in the 200 freestyle with Jeb Darhower of Oxford (1:42.43).

The Knights ended the day with a second place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. Jamieson, Derek Friday, Daly and Fein touched in 1:26.12.

“I just came here this year to North Penn,” said Jamieson, who transferred from Chicago. “I’ve never been on a team where everyone’s pretty similar sizes and ages and I’ve never been on a team that was this close before.

“Getting this big a jump in the team scoring is great. After both relays everyone was really excited. Right from the start, we were able to get things going and get a positive attitude.

“Being on the two relays and swimming well in my individual event is definitely something to feel good about but I attribute it to the team and the coach (Jeff Faikish). Coming in from Chicago I’ve never trained this hard. North Penn training is the hardest training I’ve done in my life. That’s 100 percent because of this team. We push each other in the pool and our coach is constantly pushing us.

“I have a great deal of confidence in our performance and I think Friday is going to be an even better day for us.”

Andy Thomas of Hatboro-Horsham earned his first district title in the 200 freestyle (1:39.20).

“I had a really good day,” Thomas said. “It’s an awesome way to start off districts. My time now is already better than my state time from last year so I’m excited to see what I can do at states when I’m shaved and tapered.

“I have a lot of confidence for the rest of the meet. I’m swimming Connor Doyle (Pennsbury) in the 100 breaststroke. That’s going to be a good matchup. He won the 200 IM so I think it’s going to be a good race and I’m excited to see what I can do.

“I have big shoes to fill with my older brother (Michael, now at California). It’s a lot of weight. Last year I wasn’t really scoring any first place medals so this year I really had to try to do it.”

The Hatters also won the 200 freestyle relay. John Scully, Luke Emig, Thomas and Tim McPoyle were the winning quartet (1:25.79).

Also for Hatboro-Horsham, Scully was third in the 50freestyle (21.45).

The Hatters are fourth in team scoring with 103 points.

Pennsbury’s Connor Doyle won the 200 individual medley in1:50.83.

“It’s very exciting,” Doyle said. “I was a little bit nervous. Normally it wouldn’t faze me, but I think this is just a different environment. There’s a lot of unknown factors at these meets. You don’t know who’s going to have the big drops. Everyone’s at a different spot. Most of these kids swim club so you don’t know the conditions, who’s tapered and who’s not.

“I was not tapered, I wasn’t shaved, so I was just going to go for it and see what I could do. The best thing you can do is use the experience that you have. I’ve done this event countless times so I know it like the back of my hand. Everything just came together.”

Pennsbury medley relay was seventh. Doyle, Damian Szlaga, Connor Nadel and Will Deitch  teamed up for a time of 1:37.65.

Pennsbury is ninth in team scoring with 52 points.

Souderton’s Cristian Musterait took second in the 50 freestyle (21.07).

Storm Krader, T.J. Yaglenski, Musterait and Michael Dechert were third in the 200 medley relay (1:35.09) and Reid Sinkinson, Krader,Yaglenski and Musterait took third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:26.28).

Yaglenski was seventh in the 100 butterfly (51.61) to finish the day for the Indians.
