SOL Field Hockey Results 9-3-10

Central Bucks South 5, Neshaminy 1

The Titans looked every bit the part of the defending league and district champions they are, opening up a 4-0 lead and rolling to the decisive win.
Jessie Accurso led the Titans with a pair of goals while teammates Casey Haegele, Maddy Harding and Colleen Kempf each added single goals.
Truman 2, Academy Park 1 (OT)
Briley Acker scored with four minutes remaining in overtime to give the Tigers the hard-fought win.
“We dominated the entire first half,” coach Dawn Martesi said. “We played well. We had eight shots on goal to their four.”
A goal by Mallori Kolar sent the Tigers into halftime with a 1-0 lead, but with two minutes remaining in regulation, Academy Park used a goal on a corner by Ashley O’Donnell to knot the score, sending the game into overtime.
“This win was very important, considering we tied them last year, and it’s important for us for the first time to start off with a win in our season,” Martesi said. “It feels good.”
Wissahickon 2, Council Rock North 0
In a battle of defending SOL champions, the Trojans emerged the winners in Friday’s non-league opener.
“My defense was awesome,” coach Lucy Gil said. “They had one or two breakaways, but for the most part, we kept the ball in our end of the field.”
The Trojans’ coach credited junior midfielders Lauren Becker and Gretchen Guaglianone for enabling Wissahickon to control play.
Becker scored both goals for the Trojans – both in the second half, using assists from Angela Virtu and Jackie Hibbs.
Wissahickon’s Rina Lobell turned away a pair of shots in goal while Council Rock North goalie Amanda Krause had five saves.
Upper Moreland 3, Lansdale Catholic 0
Kathryn Brunner scored a first-half goal, and teammate Alyssa Wasson added a pair in the second half to lead the Golden Bears to the convincing win. Amber Stainback and Rebecca Coutts each contributed an assist.
“It was great,” coach Karen Grossi said. “In our scrimmages, we were very unsure what was going to happen.
“Things kind of clicked this week during practice, so going into the game we were hoping for good things. The fact that it turned out that way was terrific. We were able to score, and the girls played as a team.”
Grossi lauded the solid efforts of center mid Megan Marley and left mid Erin Meade.
Upper Dublin 2, Hatboro-Horsham 1 (OT)
Emily Hitchings turned a Sam Boyd pass into the game winner with 3:23 remaining in overtime to give the Flying Cardinals the big win.
“I really didn’t know much about them coming in,” UD coach Heather Boyer said. “We hadn’t played them in years.”
The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie with Val Sadowl (Lizzy Carr assist) giving the Hatters a lead only to see Kelly Cross (Sam Boyd assist) answer for the Flying Cardinals. That 1-1 tie stood until late in OT.
“The second half we did a better job of beating them to the ball,” said Boyer.
The Hatters were a man down – the result of a yellow card – when the Flying Cardinals scored the game winner.
A key to the game was the defensive effort of sophomore sweeper Sydney Lang, who had a pair of stick saves for the Flying Cardinals – one in regulation and one in overtime.
“This was a very big win,” Boyer said. “I’m not so sure these girls realize their full potential yet.
“We have been moving them around, and there are so many new faces from having graduated such a large senior class. I think they’re starting to get the idea, ‘Hey, we can play.’”
Pennridge 1, Upper Merion 0
Nikki Thren earned a win in her coaching debut, thanks to an unassisted goal by Sarah Yerk in the first half.
“It was a great win,” the rookie coach said. “It was definitely important to start out the year with a win. It gave the girls the confidence to see they can compete and they can do it.
“In terms of the game, the girls came out hard, and they played like they wanted to be there. They had control of the ball. They just gave it their all. Across the board, everyone played well.”
For the Vikings, goalie Aly Frymoyer turned away 10 shots.
Upper Perk 3, Souderton 2
The Tribe opened up a 3-1 lead and then withstood some serious late-game pressure by the Indians for the win.
“We called a timeout, and we started playing a lot better,” coach Mary Ann Harris said. “We really played well for the last 20 minutes.
“We were attacking. We just couldn’t get the ball in the cage. We finished strong.”
The Indians’ second-half dominance is underscored by the fact that they held an 8-0 advantage in corners.
Courtney Bradshaw scored a first-half goal for the Indians, who trailed 2-1 at the half, and Alex Atiyeh connected to make it a 3-2 game in the second half.
Quakertown 1, Plymouth Whitemarsh 1
The Colonials held an 11-2 advantage in shots in regulation, but the two teams were deadlocked 1-1 on the scoreboard.
The Panthers used a goal by Ashley Guenst (Courtney Heverly assist) to go on top 1-0, but Meg McCullough answered for the Colonials, setting the stage for overtime. Both teams had their chances in OT but came up empty.
North Penn 5, Boyertown 0
The Maidens dominated play in their non-league win over the visiting Bears, opening up a 4-0 halftime lead en route to the 5-0 win.
Juliamae Marger made her varsity debut an impressive one, connecting for the hat trick. Marger (Elizabeth Fedele assist) put the Maidens on the scoreboard at the 28:41 mark of the first half and then scored an unassisted goal 12 minutes later.
Goals by Ashley Liss (Amy Coughlin assist) and Fedele sent the Maidens into halftime with a 4-0 cushion.
Marger closed out a memorable afternoon by scoring early in the second half, this time using an Amy Coughlin assist.
“She’s going to be a strong player,” Maiden co-coach Becky Poole said of Marger. “She works hard, and it’s definitely shown. She has improved a lot.”
