UPPER MORELAND 4, NORRISTOWN 3 (OT)
Last Thursday, the Golden Bears broke a 31-game SOL losing streak with their win over Upper Merion. On Tuesday, Upper Moreland won its first back-to-back games since October of 2008.
Making Tuesday’s win even more impressive is the fact that the Golden Bears twice had an answer after the Eagles scored to take the lead.
“We always tell them – the best time to score is right after they score because they’re on a high, and you can catch them off guard,” UM coach Karen Grossi said. “It was funny because we did it. Within two minutes after they scored, we scored, so that was awesome.
“Today our attackers just played well in the circle. They finally did what we have been asking them to do, and they did it without thinking too much. I think it just clicked for them today. The attack really started playing well together. They were looking up to score. They were intense, but they were calm.
“The midfield was there to support them, and the defense stayed strong. We struggled in the beginning, but after a little talk, they started playing again.”
Keifonna Ferguson put the Eagles on the scoreboard with less than five remaining in the opening half. A minute later, Maura O’Leary answered for the Golden Bears, using a Leslie Adeoye assist to send the teams into halftime deadlocked 1-1.
Ferguson put the Eagles back on top with a goal less than five minutes into the second half, and 70 seconds later, Adeoye (O’Leary assist) scored for the Golden Bears. That scenario was replayed midway through the half. Vanessa Fosco connected for the Eagles, and just over two minutes later Sara Nyholm scored for the Golden Bears, knotting the score 2-2. With 4:18 remaining in OT, O’Leary connected for her second goal of the day, using assists from Sarah Reice and Emily Jeinnings.
“It was really exciting,” Grossi said. “Each time they came back. They never got down. When Norristown scored, we stayed in it.
“Overtime was exciting. Norristown dominated the first five minutes. It was down in our defensive end the whole time. They got a couple of shots on goal and a couple of corners, and we just stayed with it.”
Grossi lauded the performances of several players.
“Emily Jeinnings played well in the midfield, and Maura O’Leary was in the right place at the right time,” the Golden Bears’ coach said. “Sara Nyholm did a great job cutting to the ball and getting possession for our team.
“Bridget Meade, our goalie, made some nice saves.”
Norristown coach Stacie Staufenberg also commended the efforts of several players.
“Vanessa Fosco was moving the ball on grass as on turf,” she said. “O’Leary really played well on both sides of the field today for Upper Moreland. Her ability to keep fighting was rewarded.”
The Golden Bears (3-10, 2-8 SOL) will travel to Upper Dublin on Wednesday while Norristown (4-6, 4-9) will travel to Springfield.

The Spartans evened their record in league play at 5-5 (6-6 overall) while the Vikings fell to 1-6-1 in the league (3-10-1 overall).

HATBORO-HORSHAM 2, PENNRIDGE 0
Twenty-two days after the Rams upended the Hatters 2-1, the Hatters exacted a degree of revenge, defeating the Rams on their home turf Tuesday night. More important than revenge was the fact that the Hatters vaulted ahead of the Rams in the battle for third place in the conference standings.
“We all knew this was really important,” Hatter junior Emily Braunewall said. “I really felt the need to get really hyped up and get the whole team hyped up.
“We all knew how important it was, and we came out here and we killed it. I’m really proud of how we did today.”
Braunewell certainly excelled, turned away 11 Ram shots on goal.
“Emily had a phenomenal game, and we had excellent defense by Jane Henry, Brenna Reilly and Keely Henry,” coach Laura Swezey said. “We also had great passing and ball transition up the field by Casey Swezey and Jenna Cutilli in the midfield where most of the play happened tonight.
“Jaime DiQuattro had some key passes in the offensive circle play, contributing a third party assist that finished with a goal.”
With most of the play between the 20s in the opening half, the two teams went into halftime locked in a scoreless tie. Gabby Acker put the Hatters on the scoreboard at the 19:14 mark of the second half, using a Kelsy Hopkins assist. Colby Eldridge Syd Rausa assist) added an insurance goal nine minutes later.
“Tonight we had more connections on the field and were talking more,” said Braunewell of the differences this time around. “Everybody had smarter passing, smarter decision making. Overall, it was just a better game.
“We came in and said, ‘They beat us once, but they’re not beating us again.’”
Swezey, whose team held a 4-3 edge in corners, echoed Braunewell’s sentiments.
“We actually talked a lot,” the Hatters’ coach said. “We had an indoor practice yesterday, and it was probably the most beneficial thing that could have happened because we were in a more confined area, and they had to spread out in a certain way, and they had to talk.
“The communication was the biggest thing, and in the second half, everyone started coming back to help on defense. We played both sides of the field.”
Braunewell saw a very familiar face when the Rams were in the circle. High-scoring Ram forward Kari Moyer is a teammate of the Hatter goalie on her Mystx indoor club team.
“It’s so fun,” Braunewell said of knowing your opponent. “But it makes it a little more nerveracking because you don’t want them to score.”
While the Rams fell to 6-4 in the league (9-4 overall), the Hatters are 7-3 (9-3-1 overall).
“This was one of the biggest games because of district seeding,” Swezey said. “We knew it was going to be tough. I told them, ‘Don’t look to the next day.’”
Waiting in the wings for the Hatters on Wednesday is Central Bucks South. The two teams will meet at Hatboro at 7 p.m. The Rams will host Central Bucks West in a night game as well.
Hatboro-Horsham      0-2   2

NORTH PENN 4, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 0
Shannon Talbot connected for the hat trick to lead the Maidens to their third win in four games since snapping a five-game losing streak. In those three wins, the Maidens have outscored their opponents by a combined 13-0 score.
The fun started early for the Maidens when Jenn DeLongis scored an unassisted goal in the third minute. Then Talbot went to work, scoring 12 minutes into the first half during corner play with an assist from Katrina Marger. The Maidens led 3-0 after Talbot scored an unassisted goal with seven minutes remaining in the half. Talbot completed the hat trick with a goal midway through the second half, using a Casey O’Donnell assist.
The Maidens controlled play from start to finish, drawing 14 corners and taking 17 shots. The Patriots did not draw a corner and managed just two shots.
North Penn goalie Chessa Kownurko was credited with two saves while Marissa Elizardo, who also saw action, was not forced to make a save. East goalie Sam Grzegorczyk turned away 12 shots and her backup had four.
